Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can this earlier Ethernet all-in-one duplex-print A4 and automatically scan both sides of Letter originals in color?
Qualifies with the documented compatible Windows setup. It also has a Letter/Legal-capable glass and 300 sheets of included input. Duplex scanner mechanism remains unspecified, so this does not claim single-pass capture.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I automatically scan both sides of a Legal original through the feeder?
Fails: the exact original caps automatic duplex originals at 11.7 in. Legal simplex feeder and Legal glass support cannot extend that two-sided route.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the standard 8860DN join my Wi-Fi network with no printer cable?
Fails: the exact standard interfaces are USB, parallel and Ethernet. The shared manual assigns wireless to 8870DW, not 8860DN.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired office scanner with useful Legal glass
The Brother MFC-8860DN fits an established, compatible wired office that prints monochrome documents and needs color scanning, copying and conventional fax. Its large glass accommodates Legal originals, while a 50-page ADF handles suitable loose stacks. It also supports automatic two-sided scanning, but the deciding boundary is the original size: automatic duplex originals stop at Letter/A4 length even though longer Legal originals fit other scanning routes.
Brother marks the exact model discontinued. Its original documents establish historical operating capabilities, not present stock, machine condition or full support for a new computer. The shared guide covers several different printers, so the 8860DN model branch matters for wireless, duplex scanning and other hardware.
Separate the three document routes
The glass accepts up to 8.5 × 14 in. originals, giving a Legal sheet that should not travel through a feeder a documented alternative. The simplex ADF also accepts suitable originals up to 14 in. long. Automatic two-sided scanning is a third route, limited to 11.7 in. length in the exact original specification. The copy instructions explicitly say that two-sided Legal originals cannot use duplex ADF copying.
That distinction determines a real purchase requirement. Scanning a single-sided Legal contract is supported through the documented feeder path; automatically capturing both sides of that Legal sheet is not. Automatic duplex Letter/A4 scanning is positively supported, but the read sources do not establish whether the mechanism reverses sheets or captures both sides in one pass. A single-pass requirement therefore remains unverified rather than being guessed from the word duplex.
Three hundred included input sheets
The 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet multipurpose tray provide 300 sheets of normal included input on the specified 20 lb plain-paper basis. Both support the dimensions needed for Letter, Legal and A4. The optional LT-5300 is a separately purchased 250-sheet expansion; it should not be counted when comparing the standard printer’s capacity. Envelopes and suitable heavier media use the multipurpose route with the correct driver settings.
Printing has a different duplex size list from scanning. The USA software guide explicitly permits A4, Letter and Legal for automatic two-sided printing with suitable regular paper. It also distinguishes Use Duplex Unit from Manual Duplex, which requires the user to reinsert paper. Brother rates one-sided Letter printing at up to 30 ppm, with a separate 13-sides-per-minute duplex figure. These are manufacturer declarations for different operations, not results measured here.
Network scanning needs compatible software
USB, parallel and 10/100 Ethernet are documented standard interfaces. The actual network section positively supports shared printing and scanning, but its software exceptions matter: network scanning is excluded on Windows NT 4 and original Mac OS 9.1–9.2. The listed Mac OS X 10.2.4-or-later arrangement has a different function boundary. A network print queue alone is not evidence that every computer can scan.
There is no standard wireless interface on the 8860DN. The 8870DW has its own named wireless branch in the manual. For compatible native Windows driver jobs, the Secure key releases stored print data after a four-digit password. The software guide excludes that setting in the BR-Script driver, so it should not be advertised as an unconditional function of every available driver. Conventional fax additionally needs suitable telephone service.
Supplies and placement before choosing an earlier model
The original guide names TN-550 and TN-580 replacement toner with approximate 3500- and 7000-page declarations at 5% coverage on Letter or A4. DR-520 is a separate drum with an approximate 25000-page declaration affected by use. These older coverage-based toner figures are not ISO yields, current costs or remaining life for a particular machine. No numeric monthly recommendation is established in the read exact sources, so speed alone is not used to invent one.
The USA edition uses 100–120 V AC. Its body is 20.9 in. wide, 17.7 in. deep and 18.7 in. high; allow document loading, open trays and service access. The published 36.9 lb weight excludes drum and toner, so full loaded weight is left unknown. Choose this configuration for a deliberately compatible wired routine. If automatic Legal duplex scanning or a verified single-pass method is essential, choose equipment whose exact operating documents establish that route.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
US original rates up to 30 one-sided Letter ppm; exact web support separately gives 28 A4 ppm. Duplex print rate is separately 13 sides/minute; it is not 30 sheets/minute.
Paper handling
Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP tray total 300 at 20 lb plain paper, with Letter/Legal/A4 sizes supported. Optional 250-sheet LT-5300 is excluded. Actual US software guide permits automatic duplex on A4, Letter and Legal regular paper.
Scanning arrangement
50-page ADF accepts simplex originals up to 8.5 × 14 in and automatic duplex originals only up to 8.5 × 11.7 in. Glass accepts up to 8.5 × 14 in. Automatic two-sided scanning is positive; physical reversing versus single-pass method is unestablished in these read sources.
Computer and mobile connections
Included Hi-Speed USB 2.0, IEEE 1284 parallel and 10/100 Ethernet. Exact network scanner support has OS exceptions. Wireless belongs to the 8870DW branch; AirPrint/Mopria are unestablished.
Supplies and declared yields
Original TN-550 and TN-580 replacement declarations are 3500 and 7000 pages at 5% Letter/A4 coverage. DR-520 is a separate approximately 25000-page drum. No inbox yield, current cost or remaining-life assertion made.
Electrical edition and setup
USA 100–120 V AC 50/60 Hz. Body 20.9 in wide, 17.7 deep, 18.7 high. Published 36.9 lb excludes drum/toner, so complete loaded weight is unknown. No numeric recommended monthly volume or duty established.
