MFC-8950DWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible office capturing two-sided Legal originals while keeping substantial ordinary paper loaded.

The main tradeoff

The taller DWT package and additional lower tray are separate; its color scanner and touchscreen do not provide color printing.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier Ethernet model single-pass scan Legal in color, offer Legal glass and hold 550 sheets of Legal paper?

Qualifies in the documented desktop arrangement. The exact model confirms both Legal scanner routes and 500-plus-50 included Legal input, while printing remains monochrome.

A larger cassette and real single-pass capture

The Brother MFC-8950DW fits an established office that needs monochrome documents and efficient capture of two-sided originals. Its useful combination is a 500-sheet main cassette, a 50-sheet multipurpose tray and a single-pass duplex ADF. It also has full Legal-size glass for appropriate originals that should not enter the feeder.

The deciding package distinction is DW versus DWT. This review counts 550 included print-input sheets for the base DW, rather than borrowing an extra lower cassette or the taller DWT body from a shared table. Check the actual supplied trays when comparing surviving older listings.

Legal input is supported on both scanning routes

The exact manufacturer product page explicitly describes simultaneous capture of both sides in a single pass. The USA operating specification separately gives the duplex ADF a document range through 8.5 × 14 in. This establishes Legal-size single-pass capture, rather than inferring scanner mechanics from a scan-speed figure or a duplex-print label.

The 50-page ADF declaration uses the stated 20 lb paper basis. Follow the original weight, condition and loading restrictions for a suitable document stack. The glass also supports up to 8.5 × 14 in., so a Legal original that is unsuitable for transport has a positively documented flatbed route. Leave room above the machine to handle it.

Color scanning, monochrome printing and the five-inch color touchscreen are three separate capabilities. The screen provides controls and shortcuts; it does not add a color toner engine. Paper copies and prints are black-and-white even when a color original is captured to the computer.

Keep network and computer requirements together

The exact product describes printing and scanning over Gigabit Ethernet or 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, with a local USB computer route as well. Check the compatible Brother desktop driver and scan application for the actual operating system. The surviving support list names historical Windows and Mac versions and should not be treated as a blanket guarantee for every later system.

AirPrint is positively listed for the documented wireless-network arrangement, and Wi-Fi Direct is a separate supported print option. A local USB route does not supply a network mobile-printing protocol by itself. Likewise, desktop scanning support does not establish every scanning setting in every phone application.

The front direct-USB function uses appropriate storage and supported document formats. That host socket is different from the computer cable interface. Analog fax also needs a suitable telephone connection, rather than merely attaching Ethernet. Historical cloud-service listings do not establish that each service remains operational today.

Count capacity for the actual paper size

The included 500-sheet cassette and 50-sheet MP tray both support ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 sizes on their stated 20 lb plain-paper basis. That establishes 550 included sheets for those pages. An optional 500-sheet lower tray is a separate addition for the DW configuration.

The USA automatic-print-duplex list contains Letter, Legal and Folio. A4 is supported for ordinary input but does not appear in that exact regional duplex list. Suitable envelopes use the MP path under its own media restrictions; they should not inherit an automatic two-sided routine simply because the tray accepts them.

Check the earlier hardware and consumables

The exact USA specification declares up to 42 one-sided Letter pages per minute. Automatic print duplex is separately 18 sides per minute, or 9 physical sheets per minute. These are Brother’s figures, not our measured results. The read surviving exact sources do not establish a numerical recommended monthly maximum, so speed and tray size cannot fill that workload gap.

The product advertises a super-high-yield 12000-page replacement toner option under the maker’s declared yield conditions. That is not proof of what an older package includes or how much toner remains. Check the separate drum condition and actual supplies before comparing ownership costs.

The USA 110–120 V DW body measures 19.3 × 16.3 × 18.8 in. and weighs 39 lb with consumables. The taller and heavier DWT entry is a different package. Brother marks MFC-8950DW discontinued. Choose this earlier reference for its confirmed Legal capture and 550-sheet routine, after verifying condition, software and access space.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact USA rating: up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm; print duplex separately 18 sides/minute, 9 sheets/minute. No numerical recommended monthly maximum is established in the read surviving sources.

Paper handling

Included DW: 500-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP at 20 lb plain paper, each supporting Letter/Legal/A4. USA automatic print duplex lists Letter/Legal/Folio. The additional 500-sheet lower tray is optional for this DW reference.

Scanning arrangement

Exact product explicitly describes simultaneous single-pass two-sided capture. USA specification separately supports duplex ADF originals through 8.5 x 14 in. and glass through 8.5 x 14 in. ADF capacity is 50 at the stated 20 lb basis.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi and separately documented Wi-Fi Direct printing. AirPrint uses the documented wireless-network setup. Do not promise operation of a historical cloud service.

Supplies and declared yields

The product advertises a 12000-page super-high-yield replacement toner under the maker’s yield conditions. This is a replacement option, not verified supplied toner or remaining life. Drum and toner remain separate consumables.
