Brother MFC-9840CDW: color office output with size-specific duplex capture review

Color output and several distinct document paths

The Brother MFC-9840CDW is an earlier color laser all-in-one with USB, Ethernet and ordinary Wi-Fi. It can print and copy in color, scan color files and handle analog fax. Its Legal glass, 50-sheet document feeder and 300-sheet standard paper arrangement offer several useful office routines, but the word duplex does not make their size and handling limits identical.

The clearest fit is a compatible desktop office handling color documents, stationary Legal originals and automatic two-sided capture of documented Letter originals. This assessment uses the exact US original guide and the US specification in its actual Spanish-language form. A surviving support entry is not a promise of present stock, condition or compatibility with every later computer.

Letter automatic capture is different from Legal simplex capture

The ADF accepts suitable one-sided originals through 8.5 × 14 inches. Its capacity is up to fifty ordinary 20 lb / 80 g/m² pages under the loading conditions. The glass separately reaches 8.5 × 14 inches, providing a real Legal stationary route for appropriate originals that should not travel through rollers. Books and thick items still need the guide's cover and loading precautions.

Automatic duplex scanning is positively documented. The US general table and specification qualifications describe Letter as the duplex-ADF maximum, while the detailed scanner envelope ends at 11.7 inches. This review retains the unambiguous Letter automatic route. It does not turn Legal simplex acceptance into Legal duplex capture or guess whether the feeder reverses an original or scans both faces in one pass. A strict single-pass requirement needs positive mechanism evidence.

Output duplex has a different paper list

The cassette holds 250 sheets and the MP tray fifty on the stated plain-paper capacity basis. Documented ordinary input includes Letter, Legal and A4, giving 300 standard sheets for those sizes. The lower 500-sheet cassette is optional. Suitable envelopes use the MP path, whose separate envelope capacity is up to three rather than fifty.

The actual US print-media section lists Letter, Legal and Folio for automatic output duplex. The inherited Chinese-region software chapter's broader A4 instruction is not substituted for this US list. Both monochrome and color one-sided Letter printing are rated up to 21 ppm, while automatic duplex is separately up to seven printed sides per minute. These are manufacturer declarations rather than personal timing results or completed duplex sheets at the simplex headline.

Native computer functions and protected release

The original computer table supports compatible desktop printing and scanning through USB, Ethernet and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. Server rows provide network printing only. An original ad-hoc wireless mode is not relabeled Wi-Fi Direct, and no AirPrint or Mopria capability is inferred from generic network protocols. Historical software requirements should be checked against the intended computer, particularly for scanner controls.

The exact control-panel instructions identify a Secure key that releases stored print data after entry of a four-digit password. That print-job routine is separate from Secure Function Lock's user restrictions. It is recorded within a compatible native desktop arrangement rather than promised in an undocumented phone app. Analog fax also requires its own suitable telephone connection; the network socket does not supply the phone line.

Separate maintenance items and a substantial loaded body

Standard TN-110 toner is declared around 2,500 black and 1,500 each cyan, magenta and yellow pages; TN-115 is around 5,000 black and 4,000 each color at 5% Letter coverage. These older figures are not relabeled ISO/IEC yields. The DR-110CL drum, BU-100CL belt and WT-100CL waste box have separate declarations and usage conditions. Exact inbox toner yield and a recurring monthly recommendation remain unknown here.

The US guide specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The exact US specification gives a body 20.9 × 21.2 × 20.5 inches and 83.6 lb with the process unit. The original guide's 73.2 lb figure expressly excludes drum and toner. Use the loaded declaration for lifting and leave cover, feeder, tray and service clearance. Choose the machine for its verified color and document routes with each duplex size and method requirement stated explicitly.
