MFC-L2740DWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible small-office desktop that needs automatic capture of two-sided originals alongside monochrome output.

The main tradeoff

The color touchscreen and color scanner do not provide color printing, and Legal capture uses the feeder rather than the glass.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it duplex-print Legal and single-pass scan Legal in color over Ethernet, with native PIN release and 250 included sheets?

Qualifies with the compatible native Windows printer/scanner arrangement and suitable originals. Print duplex, ADF scan duplex and protected-job release are separate documented routines; the monthly recommendation reaches 2,000 pages.

Can I scan a full Legal page on the glass without feeding it?

Fails: the glass is shorter than Legal. The Legal capture route is the ADF, even though the machine also has a flatbed.

Does its color touchscreen mean it qualifies for color printing?

Fails: the exact print engine is monochrome. A color screen and color scan file are separate capabilities.

Single-pass capture beside monochrome output

The Brother MFC-L2740DW suits a compatible small-office desktop that needs monochrome laser output and automatic capture of two-sided originals. Its 35-sheet feeder has positively documented single-pass duplex scanning, while USB, Ethernet and Wi-Fi provide different computer arrangements. The deciding limits are the smaller glass, US print-duplex paper sizes and recommended monthly workload. A color touchscreen and color scanner do not make it a color printer.

This assessment treats the original model as an earlier equipment reference. It does not infer present stock, condition or universal software compatibility from a surviving product page. Printing, copying, color scanning and analog fax are established, but they use their appropriate settings and physical connections. The fax line is independent of Ethernet rather than a function of the network socket itself.

The exact model has a duplex feeder

The brochure explicitly describes scanning both sides of an original in a single pass. The actual US operating chapter names only MFC-L2740DW for its automatic two-sided scan instructions, requiring the ADF and the correct long-edge or short-edge binding choice in ControlCenter 4. This is genuine scanner evidence rather than a feature borrowed from automatic print duplex.

The documented ADF accepts ordinary originals up to 8.5 × 14 inches. The glass is smaller: the US support table gives 8.5 × 11.8 inches, while the brochure describes Letter-size glass. Neither establishes a Legal flatbed. Suitable Legal stacks use the feeder; books, fragile originals or items unsuitable for feeding need the appropriate stationary-glass dimensions. Loading and original-condition instructions remain important even with a duplex feeder.

Keep input capacity and print-duplex size together

The main cassette holds up to 250 sheets of the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² plain paper and supports Letter, Legal and A4. A separate one-sheet manual feed accepts suitable envelopes and other documented media. It is not another stack tray. The original guide provides the appropriate settings and output handling rather than treating ordinary paper and envelopes as the same routine.

The US automatic print-duplex list is Letter, Legal and Folio. A4 ordinary input support does not automatically establish A4 two-sided output in this regional configuration. The maker rates one-sided Letter printing at up to 32 ppm, with automatic Letter duplex separately up to 15 sides, or 7.5 sheets, per minute. Those are different conditions and units, not hands-on timing results or completed duplex sheets at the simplex headline.

Desktop scanning, AirPrint and protected jobs

The original basic guide explains saving a scan through ControlCenter 4 and selecting the destination computer when connected to a network. A compatible desktop printer and scanner setup therefore matters on the selected USB, Ethernet or ordinary Wi-Fi connection. The original Server rows are network-printing arrangements rather than full desktop scanning support. A historical system list should not be treated as a promise for every later operating-system version.

Native Windows Secure Print uses a separate four-digit password for each document, followed by panel release; jobs clear after printing and when power is turned off. That exact operating evidence is kept distinct from AirPrint. Ordinary Wi-Fi desktop scanning can coexist with separate AirPrint printing on the same network without promising every scan or protected-job feature in a phone app. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate documented peer-printing route, and old cloud-service names are not promises of continued service operation.

Recommended volume, supplies and desk space

The recommended monthly range is 250–2,000 printed pages, separate from the 10,000-page maximum duty cycle. Use the recommendation for a recurring workload rather than substituting the higher maximum. The included starter is approximately 700 pages; TN-630 replacement toner is declared around 1,200 pages and TN-660 around 2,600 under ISO/IEC 19752. The DR-630 drum is a separate maintenance item with an approximately 12,000-page declaration under its usage conditions.

The US edition specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. The loaded body measures 16.1 × 15.7 × 12.5 inches and weighs 25.8 lb. Allow feeder, cover, paper-loading and service clearance beyond the closed body. These are source specifications rather than current supply costs or remaining-life estimates. Choose it for compatible monochrome work with single-pass document capture; require another documented model when color printing, Legal glass or a higher recommended volume is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US table rates up to 32 one-sided Letter ppm. Automatic Letter duplex is separately up to 15 sides / 7.5 sheets per minute. Color scanning and the color display do not make the print engine color.

Paper handling

250-sheet main cassette on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis supports Letter, Legal and A4. Separate one-sheet manual feed accepts suitable envelopes. US automatic print-duplex media are Letter, Legal and Folio; A4 simplex input alone is not A4 duplex evidence.

Scanning arrangement

35-sheet ADF through 8.5 × 14 in. with positively documented single-pass automatic two-sided capture. US support specifies glass maximum 8.5 × 11.8 in.; brochure describes Letter-size glass. Neither establishes Legal glass. Correct long/short-edge binding settings matter.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB, 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and separately documented Wi-Fi Direct. Native desktop software supports computer scanning on the ordinary selected connection. AirPrint is documented for ordinary wireless-network printing; Mopria is unestablished in the read exact sources.

Supplies and declared yields

Included approximately 700-page starter toner; TN-630 replacement approximately 1,200 pages and TN-660 approximately 2,600 under ISO/IEC 19752. Separate DR-630 drum approximately 12,000 pages with usage conditions. Old cloud service names are not current operational promises.

Electrical edition and setup

US 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Body 16.1 × 15.7 × 12.5 in. and 25.8 lb with supplies. Recommended monthly range 250–2,000 pages is separate from 10,000 maximum duty. Confirm compatible software and leave feeder, cover and service clearance.
