Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can native Ethernet combine all functions, protected mono Legal duplex, color Legal feeder capture and 300 included Legal sheets within 3,500 monthly pages?
Qualifies with compatible native software, suitable paper and separate telephone setup. Legal capture uses the simplex ADF; one-sided Letter output is declared up to 42 ppm.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a Legal original be scanned from the flatbed?
Fails: the exact glass maximum is 11.8 in., shorter than Legal. Legal fits the simplex feeder instead.
Explore this need in the finder →Does duplex printing establish automatic two-sided feeder capture?
Fails: the exact 50-page feeder is simplex and primary specifications explicitly exclude duplex scanning.

The Brother MFC-L5700DW is a discontinued monochrome laser all-in-one for a compatible office needing protected black documents, color capture and telephone fax. It includes a fifty-page simplex feeder, 300 ordinary input sheets and toner declared at approximately 2,000 pages. Its recurring recommendation is up to 3,500 printed pages monthly.
The deciding tradeoff is original handling. Automatic two-sided output is included, but the feeder does not automatically capture reverse sides. The exact original operating guide distinguishes this model from neighbors with larger feeders, Legal glass, Gigabit Ethernet or automatic two-sided capture. Those functions are not transferred simply because several models share the guide.
Legal originals use the feeder rather than the glass
The actual feeder range reaches fourteen inches, supporting ordinary one-sided Legal originals. Its fifty-page declaration uses the stated 20 lb paper basis. The glass instead stops at 11.8 inches, supporting Letter and A4 rather than Legal. A bound or delicate Legal original therefore cannot be treated as fitting the flatbed merely because a Legal sheet can pass through the feeder.
The scanner captures color despite monochrome print-and-copy output. Optical glass and feeder declarations remain separate from the much larger interpolated value. A routine that turns one-sided originals into two-sided printed output also remains different from capturing both original sides automatically. The primary explicitly says there is no duplex scanning on this exact model.
Native protected jobs and ordinary computer capture
Hi-Speed USB, Fast Ethernet and ordinary Wi-Fi support compatible desktop printing and computer scanning. The wired interface is 10/100 rather than Gigabit. The original computer table distinguishes full desktop functions from Windows Server rows that provide network printing only. Telephone fax has its own documented line arrangement rather than being a feature of an Ethernet cable.
Native Windows Secure Print sets a separate four-digit password for each document. The operator chooses the user and stored job at the touchscreen before entering the password. Data clears after printing or power-off. This protected native arrangement is kept separate from AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct, which do not establish the same native password or desktop-scanner workflow.
The front flash-memory print-and-scan routine and external-reader connection are also separate uses. Historical cloud names require an actually available service and appropriate account; their appearance in an old feature list is not a present availability promise. Confirm usable software and the intended destination before relying on a particular capture shortcut.
300 included sheets with optional expansion
The 250-sheet cassette and fifty-sheet multipurpose tray total 300 on the stated plain-paper basis. Both support Letter, Legal and A4. Optional lower trays can reach 1,340 sheets, but that larger total is excluded from the included configuration. Suitable envelopes use the instructed multipurpose routine and its separate thickness conditions.
The exact US automatic output-duplex list includes Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal and India Legal. Ordinary A4 input does not expand that regional list. Correct stock, paper source and driver settings remain necessary. The 3.7-inch touchscreen and 256 megabytes describe this model rather than a higher family configuration.
Separate workload, speed and supply declarations
One-sided output is declared up to forty-two Letter pages per minute, separately from twenty duplex sides or ten sheets per minute. Published simplex scan rates use Letter at 300 dpi with advanced features off. These are manufacturer declarations rather than personal measurements. Maximum duty of 50,000 is distinct from the 3,500-page recurring recommendation.
TN-820 and TN-850 replacements have different ISO/IEC 19752 yields, while the included toner declaration is approximately 2,000 pages. TN-880 compatibility belongs to other specified models. The separate DR-820 drum declaration varies with pages per job. The loaded body is 17.1 × 16.8 × 19.1 inches and 36.2 lb, with US 110–120 VAC requirements. Leave document, paper-path and maintenance access; unattended two-sided originals require a differently equipped alternative.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 42 one-sided Letter ppm, automatic duplex separately 20 sides / 10 sheets per minute. Exact primary simplex scan 28 black / 20 color ipm uses Letter 300 dpi with advanced features off. Recommended monthly maximum 3,500 differs from 50,000 duty. Default duplex change required for one-sided headline.
Paper handling
Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP at 20 lb / 80 g/m², Letter/Legal/A4, total 300. Optional LT-5500/LT-6500 trays reach 1,340, excluded. Exact US output duplex Letter, Legal, Folio, Mexico Legal, India Legal, suitable 16–28 lb. Appropriate MP envelopes up to 10 within thickness conditions use separate routine.
Scanning arrangement
Exact 50-page simplex ADF at 20 lb reaches 14 in for Legal; glass maximum 11.8 in. supports Letter/A4, not Legal. Actual model excluded from automatic ADF duplex branches and primary expressly No duplex scan. Color native capture positive; optical glass 1200 × 1200 and ADF 600 × 600 separate from 19,200 interpolated. One-sided originals can produce two-sided output without automatic reverse-side capture.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard Hi-Speed USB,10/100 Fast Ethernet, ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and separately documented Wi-Fi Direct; not Gigabit. Exact 256 MB, 3.7-inch touchscreen. Native desktop print/scan positive; Server rows network-print-only. Front flash-memory print/scan and external reader are separate routines; NFC/rear host of other models excluded.
Supplies and declared yields
Approximately 2,000-page included toner. TN-820 replacement approximately 3,000 and TN-850 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 Letter/A4. TN-880 limited to 6700/6800 in actual guide, not 5700. Separate DR-820 approximately 30,000 at 1 page/job or 50,000 at 3, Letter/A4 simplex conditions; no current cost or remaining-life inference.
Software and support
Native Windows Secure Print sets a separate four-digit password per document, then selects user/job for touchscreen release; data clears after printing or power-off. Desktop scanning and telephone fax retain their own software/line arrangements. AirPrint/Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct do not establish native PIN or desktop scanner bridge; retired cloud names not promised current.
Electrical edition and setup
USA original 110–120 V AC, 50/60 Hz. Exact body 17.1 × 16.8 × 19.1 in., 36.2 lb with supplies. Different from wider Legal-glass family. Allow glass-lid, ADF, MP, cassette, rear-output, cables and maintenance access; verify usable native software, telephone setup and actual optional trays.
