The Brother MFC-L5850DW is a discontinued monochrome laser all-in-one with color scanning, copying and telephone fax. Its useful fit is a compatible office processing two-sided Legal originals while printing black documents and releasing supported native jobs by PIN. The seventy-page feeder captures both original sides in one pass, and the separate glass also accepts Legal. Included paper input remains 300 ordinary sheets.
The exact model is important within its shared guide. It has 512 megabytes and a 3.7-inch color touchscreen, but not every larger cassette, faster output rate, Gigabit interface or toner package shown for neighboring models. Color capture and the color display also do not make its printed output color.
Both scanner routes reach Legal
The document range reaches fourteen inches in the feeder and on the separate glass. Feeder capacity is stated on a 20 lb paper basis. The exact product description positively identifies single-pass automatic two-sided capture, and the actual ControlCenter operating chapter explicitly includes MFC-L5850DW. This supports a real Legal single-pass route rather than inferring one from automatic print duplex.
The native computer routine loads originals in the feeder, selects two-sided scanning and the binding orientation, then sets file, color and destination controls. The glass remains useful for appropriate bound or unsuitable feeder originals, but automatic two-sided capture itself uses the ADF. Optical specifications and the larger interpolated number are kept separate.
Desktop connections and separate mobile plans
Hi-Speed USB, 10/100 Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi support compatible desktop printing and scanning. The actual computer function table and network destination routine establish those routes. Server rows remain network-print-only. Gigabit networking belongs to other exact columns, and a front flash-memory routine is distinct from the computer connection.
Native Windows Secure Print sets a separate four-digit document password and releases the selected user and job at the touchscreen. Protected data clears after printing or power-off. One-sided output is rated up to forty-two Letter pages per minute, with Letter print duplex separately up to twenty sides or ten sheets per minute. The surviving web scan figures use Letter at 300 dpi with advanced features off; scan images per minute are not print pages per minute. These are manufacturer declarations, not personal timing results.
Recommended monthly output is up to 3,500 pages, separately from maximum duty of 50,000. The larger maximum figure does not replace the recurring recommendation. That matters when the attraction of a large feeder might otherwise suggest a higher documented print workload than the maker actually recommends.

The included toner declaration is approximately 3,000 pages. TN-820 replacement is approximately 3,000 and TN-850 approximately 8,000 under ISO/IEC 19752. TN-880 compatibility belongs to other family members and is excluded. The separate DR-820 drum declaration distinguishes one-page jobs from three-page jobs.
