MFC-L5900DWIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

An office digitizing suitable two-sided Letter or Legal documents while keeping monochrome print/copy output.

The main tradeoff

Only 300 print-input sheets are included, and scan image rates are different from its 42 ppm Letter print rating.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can this earlier Ethernet all-in-one scan Legal in color through a single-pass feeder and also provide a Legal flatbed?

Qualifies in the supported desktop arrangement: Brother explicitly documents single-pass duplex ADF scanning, its Legal-size input range and a separate Legal-size glass.

Can I require color printing as well as its color scanner?

Fails: this exact MFC uses a monochrome print engine. Color scanning and the color touchscreen do not provide color paper output.

Can the base package satisfy 1000 included sheets of Legal input?

Fails: the documented included Legal configuration has 300 sheets. The 1340-sheet maximum requires optional trays.

Capture both sides without changing the print engine

The Brother MFC-L5900DW suits an office that digitizes two-sided documents and prints or copies in monochrome. Its useful distinction is a 70-sheet automatic document feeder that Brother explicitly describes as single-pass duplex. It also has full Legal-size glass, so the workflow is not restricted to originals suitable for feeder transport.

Single-pass describes how the scanner captures the original, not how fast the printer produces paper. Color scanning is supported, but the laser print engine and paper copies remain black-and-white. The 3.7-inch color touchscreen is another separate feature. Choose a color-printing model when the final paper document must retain color.

Legal scanning has two actual paths

The original USA guide permits ADF documents up to 8.5 × 14 in., with the specified 17–24 lb original weight range and 70-sheet capacity based on 20 lb paper. Its operating instructions expose two-sided Long Edge and Short Edge scan settings and document-size selection for the supported computer workflow.

The same guide gives MFC-L5900DW glass up to 8.5 × 14 in. That is a genuine Legal flatbed, unlike related models with a shorter glass. Use it for an original that should not pass through the ADF, keeping the feeder empty as instructed. Allow enough room above the unit to open the cover and handle the original safely.

The declared duplex scan maximum is 56 black images per minute or 34 color images per minute. Brother’s footnote uses Letter test documents at 300 dpi with advanced features turned off. Those image rates are not print pages per minute, do not promise the same rate for Legal documents, and are not our own timed test results.

Choose the computer and network arrangement

USB, Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi support the documented desktop print and scan software. Gigabit is confirmed for this exact variant; the neighboring MFC-L5800DW has a different LAN entry. The computer-requirements table also distinguishes desktop scanning from narrower Server network-printing support.

The scan-to-file instructions select the destination computer when using the network, then expose the supported scan options. Check the actual driver, ControlCenter software and operating system before relying on an older machine. A network computer-selection PIN is distinct from the print-job release password.

AirPrint and Mopria are listed for the documented wireless-network setup, and Wi-Fi Direct is a separate peer option. A USB scan path cannot borrow those network mobile-printing protocols. Historical cloud-service names do not establish that every named service remains available today.

Keep print input and held jobs separate

The included paper arrangement is a 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet multipurpose tray, using the maker’s 20 lb plain-paper basis. Both support ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 sizes. The advertised 1340-sheet maximum needs optional lower trays; it is not the base printer’s included capacity.

The USA automatic-print-duplex list includes Letter and Legal among its named sizes, with its own paper-type and weight restrictions. It does not list A4 for this edition. Suitable envelopes use the MP path and their documented handling routine, rather than an assumed automatic two-sided process.

For confidential Windows print jobs, the original Brother-driver Secure Print routine assigns a separate four-digit password to each document. Select the job at the touchscreen and enter that password to release it. The data is cleared after printing and when power is turned off. This is temporary job holding, not a universal mobile-app security guarantee.

Assess the earlier office package

Brother declares up to 42 one-sided Letter pages per minute; print duplex is separately 20 sides per minute, or 10 sheets per minute. The recommended monthly maximum is 3500 pages, distinct from the 50000-page duty cycle. Select a higher recommended workload for sustained heavier use.

The original package lists roughly 3000-page toner and a separate DR820 drum with job-length-dependent life figures. Check remaining supplies and the suitable telephone connection needed for analog fax. The USA 110–120 V body weighs 38 lb and measures 19.5 × 16.8 × 19.1 in. Brother marks it discontinued. Choose this earlier model for its verified duplex capture routes, after confirming software, condition and service access.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

USA one-sided Letter printing up to 42 ppm; automatic print duplex separately 20 sides/minute, 10 sheets/minute. Product duplex scan maximum 56 black/34 color ipm uses Letter test documents at 300 dpi with advanced features off.

Paper handling

Included 250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet MP at 20 lb plain paper, with Letter/Legal/A4 in both paths. USA automatic print duplex supports Letter/Legal and named Folio/Legal sizes. Optional trays reach 1340, not included.

Scanning arrangement

Maker explicitly documents single-pass duplex ADF, up to 70 sheets at 20 lb. Original ADF loading sizes extend to 8.5 x 14 in.; exact 5900 glass also extends to 8.5 x 14. Computer scan instructions expose two-sided edge and document-size settings.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct are documented. Desktop scanner support is connection/OS-specific. AirPrint/Mopria are kept in the documented wireless-network plan.

Supplies and declared yields

Original package: approximately 3000-page toner and separate DR820 drum. Maker drum declaration distinguishes 30000 pages at one page per job from 50000 at three pages per job; no current cost or remaining-life claim.
