Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it scan loose Legal originals in color and print Legal automatically on both sides over Ethernet?
Yes, using compatible native desktop print and scanner software. Legal capture uses the simplex feeder, while the output duplex unit handles the printed pages.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan both faces of a stack in one pass?
No. The exact MFC-L8600CDW column has a 35-page simplex feeder and no automatic two-sided scanning.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I scan a full Legal page on the flatbed?
No. Its glass is limited to 11.7 inches; the larger models in the same manual have the Legal-length glass.

The Brother MFC-L8600CDW is an earlier color laser all-in-one for an office that wants shared printing, color computer scanning, copying and conventional fax in one cabinet. Its useful balance is a 300-sheet included paper arrangement, several standard connections and automatic two-sided printed output. Its deciding tradeoff is document capture: the 35-page feeder scans one face at a time, and the glass stops at Letter/A4 length. It does not inherit the larger glass or automatic duplex feeder of the MFC-L8850CDW.
Brother marks the exact US model discontinued. This makes the source a useful operating reference, while driver compatibility, machine condition and supply life still need checking for an individual installation. A supported old workflow is different from a promise of current availability.
Route a long original through the feeder
Loose Legal originals fit the automatic document feeder. The glass has a maximum length of 11.7 inches, so a Legal document cannot be treated as a full-size flatbed job. That difference matters for bound or delicate long originals that should not pass through the feeder. The fifty-sheet and automatic two-sided document specifications in the shared guide belong to the larger models, not this one.
Color scanning is available even when the next print job is monochrome. The operating guide describes installing the scanner driver and using ControlCenter 4 or the panel to send a document to a computer. A network installation also needs its TCP/IP configuration. Capture capability therefore depends on the actual computer connection and software, rather than merely finding the printer’s name on a network.
Desktop controls and mobile printing have different boundaries
USB, Fast Ethernet and ordinary Wi-Fi are standard. The US product record names AirPrint, Mopria and Wi-Fi Direct, providing clearer mobile evidence than a generic “mobile compatible” label. Those are useful printing routes, but this assessment keeps them separate from the native desktop scanning and confidentiality workflow. A mobile printing protocol does not establish the controls of a Windows printer driver.
The actual Secure Print chapter explicitly includes MFC-L8600CDW. Its Windows routine sets a separate four-digit password for a document, then uses the panel to select the user and job before release. The held data is cleared after printing or when power is removed. Verify the appropriate native driver before relying on that behavior; it is not assigned automatically to an AirPrint or peer-printing job.
Included paper handling and the exact output-duplex sizes
The main cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray another fifty on the stated plain-paper basis. Both support Letter, Legal and A4. The optional 500-sheet tray increases capacity only when actually installed. Keeping that distinction prevents an ordinary unit from appearing suitable for an 800-sheet requirement.
The US automatic print-duplex list is Letter, Legal and Folio, rather than every size accepted for one-sided output. A4 can be loaded, but that alone does not establish A4 automatic duplex for this regional edition. Suitable envelopes use a separate multipurpose-feed routine. The original print table declares up to thirty one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color; duplex is separately fourteen printed sides, or seven sheets, per minute. None of those figures provides a recommended monthly print volume.
Four toners and a substantial desktop footprint
The included toner declaration is approximately 2,500 black pages and 1,500 pages for each color under ISO/IEC 19798. Standard TN-331 replacements use those ratings; TN-336 increases black to approximately 4,000 and each color to 3,500. The higher TN-339 supply listed for MFC-L9550CDW should not be assigned to this model. Drum, belt and waste box have separate maintenance declarations and conditions.
The original drawing gives a 16.1-inch width, 19.8-inch depth and 19.4-inch height, with a 63.5-pound loaded weight. Allow additional room for document loading, feed access and maintenance. The US electrical edition requires 110–120 V AC. Compare a model with documented automatic feeder duplex when two-sided originals are routine; the L8600CDW’s automatic output duplex cannot remove that manual capture work.
