The Brother MFC-L8900CDW is a discontinued color laser all-in-one with a seventy-page single-pass document feeder and a separate Legal-size glass. That combination is useful when an office alternates between loose two-sided packets and originals that belong on a flatbed. It prints, copies, scans and faxes, with a five-inch color touchscreen and 512 MB standard memory.
The exact model distinction matters. The original separates this machine's larger feeder and Legal glass from the MFC-L8610CDW's fifty-page simplex feeder and shorter glass. Its single-pass input is positively documented in the product and brochure, rather than inferred from automatic two-sided printing or a shared family cover.
Native software controls two-sided computer capture
The original ControlCenter 4 operation specifically includes MFC-L8900CDW when enabling two-sided scanning. It loads the ADF, selects the two-sided option and long- or short-edge binding, then chooses the required color, file and destination settings. The operation explicitly uses the ADF instead of the glass. Document dimensions extend to fourteen-inch length, while the separate glass measures up to 8.5 by fourteen inches.
Compatible Windows desktop software supports printing and scanning through USB, Gigabit Ethernet or ordinary Wi-Fi. The original Windows Server rows are network-print-only, so those entries are not treated as scanner support. AirPrint, Mopria, Wi-Fi Direct and NFC provide other documented arrangements, with native computer capture and protected release kept separate from whatever a particular mobile application exposes.
Three hundred included sheets, with expansion optional
The supplied paper arrangement is a 250-sheet cassette plus a fifty-sheet MP input, totaling 300 plain sheets on the stated 20 lb / 80 g/m² basis. Ordinary Letter, Legal and A4 are supported in the included paths. Suitable envelopes use the MP tray, with a separate limit of ten and a stated stack-thickness condition.
The advertised 1,300-sheet configuration requires optional lower trays. The LT-330CL and LT-340CL choices have model-specific combination limits and change the installation. Automatic print duplex in the US edition lists Letter, Legal, Folio and Mexico Legal. Ordinary A4 input and an A4 duplex-speed label do not replace that precise regional media list.
Protected documents and meaningful rate comparisons
The native Windows Secure Print routine assigns a separate four-digit password to a document. The touchscreen selects the user and stored job, accepts the password and releases the copies. Secure data clears after printing or when the machine is switched off. General user restrictions, NFC authentication and mobile printing should not be substituted for this particular driver-and-panel routine.
Output is rated up to 33 one-sided Letter or 31 A4 pages per minute in black and color. Automatic Letter print duplex is separately fourteen sides, or seven sheets, per minute. The 58-image-per-minute scan claim uses different units and test conditions: the read brochure says 200 dpi while the surviving product footnote says 300 dpi, both with advanced features off. Neither scan claim becomes a print rate or a personal test result.
Recurring volume and maintenance planning
The recommended monthly maximum is 4,000 pages, distinct from the 60,000-page maximum duty figure. Inbox toner is approximately 3,000 black pages and 1,800 in each color. TN-431, TN-433 and TN-436 replacements offer separately declared ISO/IEC 19798 yields; the TN-437 branch belongs to MFC-L8905CDW. Drum, belt and waste-toner components have their own usage conditions rather than a single cartridge-replacement schedule.
The original dimension diagram confirms a 19.5-inch width, 20.7-inch depth and 21.6-inch height, with a 63.1 lb weight including supplies. The US edition specifies 110–120 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Leave space for the Legal glass lid, ADF, MP input, cassette, rear path, cables and service work. Verify usable native software and the actual earlier unit's condition before depending on its substantial document-handling features.

Scan claims of 29 simplex / 58 duplex images per minute use Letter with advanced features off; the read brochure states 200 dpi and surviving product record 300 dpi, so those qualifiers are not silently merged.
