Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it print color Letter duplex pages and capture both sides of Legal originals on Ethernet, with native PIN release?
Yes, with the installed native drivers and registered IPv4 scanner. The included 250-sheet drawer and 50-sheet multipurpose source provide 300 normal sheets. Scan and PIN release are separate routines; close Remote Scanner before releasing a held print job.
Explore this need in the finder →Is it verified to scan both sides in one pass?
That is not established by the reviewed exact sources. Automatic two-sided scanning is confirmed, but a single-pass mechanism is not, so it cannot satisfy that stricter requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the 40,000-page duty rating prove a recommended 3,000-page monthly workload?
No. It is a maximum duty-cycle figure, and the reviewed exact specification and operating sources do not establish a recommended monthly print range.
Explore this need in the finder →A color office model with real duplex capture
The Canon Color imageCLASS MF729Cdw is an earlier multifunction reference for an office that needs color printing, computer scanning, copying and telephone fax. Its useful combination is automatic two-sided output, an automatic duplex feeder and native PIN-held printing. The deciding limits are the supported workflow and physical size: the glass does not fit a full Legal original, the feeder is not established as single-pass in the reviewed sources, and the machine needs substantial working space.
Canon gives a one-sided Letter print rating of up to 21 ppm in black or color. The actual U.S. printer specification separately describes two-sided output as up to 10 pages or five sheets per minute. Those are different measures, and neither should be replaced with a scan-speed figure. The 40,000-page maximum duty cycle also does not establish a recommended monthly volume; that recommendation remains unknown in the exact sources reviewed here.
Choose the original route before choosing scan settings
The glass accepts originals up to 8.5 by 11.75 inches, allowing Letter or A4 placement. The feeder extends to Legal and has a 50-sheet Letter capacity at its stated paper weight. A Legal original therefore belongs in the feeder, while a book page or original that cannot safely pass through rollers must fit the smaller glass area.
Automatic duplex capture is positively supported in the native ScanGear MF controls. The exact model offers an ADF two-sided input choice, with original orientation and binding settings as well as the one-sided feeder and glass choices. That supports a genuine two-sided file-capture workflow. It does not establish how the feeder performs the two readings, so a buyer requiring a single-pass mechanism needs another positively documented model.
Install the correct scanner software rather than stopping after the printer queue works. The original preparation page requires registration in MF Network Scanner Selector for wired or wireless LAN capture and specifies IPv4. USB avoids that registration step, but Canon tells the user to wake the machine before USB scanning. MF Scan Utility and compatible TWAIN or WIA applications provide computer capture. If automatic online mode is disabled, select Remote Scanner on the panel before starting the computer operation.
Normal capacity is 300 sheets before optional expansion
The included paper configuration combines a 250-sheet drawer with a 50-sheet multipurpose source. Both counts use the stated ordinary-paper conditions. The additional 250-sheet drawer shown in the shared manual is optional, so it does not belong in the included capacity. Heavier or coated papers also have smaller allowed stacks; a 300-sheet normal supply is not a universal media count.
The actual paper table explicitly permits Letter, Legal and A4 automatic two-sided printing. Envelopes have separate one-sided handling, with up to 10 in the drawer or five in the alternate source, and Monarch restricted to that alternate feed. Match the machine and driver settings to the loaded paper before expecting automatic duplex output. These details matter when a shared device is used for ordinary reports and occasional special media.
PIN release belongs to the native driver workflow
Canon's Secure Print instructions begin by enabling the feature in the driver, then choosing the secured output method and assigning a document PIN. The job waits in printer memory until the user enters that PIN at the panel. The original default expiry is 30 minutes, with a configurable holding period. Unreleased documents occupy memory and can interfere with ordinary printing, so the queue should not become long-term storage.
The release screen also has a specific interaction with scanning: close Remote Scanner before entering Secure Print. This does not make the two functions incompatible in an office routine, but it means one panel state cannot be treated as every task at once. Administrator PINs and Department ID controls are separate from releasing an individual held document.
AirPrint and Mopria offer additional mobile-printing routes. The exact guide also permits Mac AirPrint printing and scanning over USB or the same LAN, with the stated Mac OS requirements and Network Link Scan settings. Application media choices and native-driver PIN behavior are kept separate; an app name alone is not evidence for their combination.
Allow for the loaded machine and original cartridges
The original supplied cartridge set is rated at approximately 1,200 black pages and a 1,400-page composite color yield. Replacement Cartridge 118 is rated at about 3,400 black and 2,900 composite CMY pages, using ISO/IEC 19798 on A4 at default density. A separately advertised Value Pack figure is not treated as a single larger cartridge. The U.S. guide specifies 120–127 V at 60 Hz and about 68.3 lb with toner. Leave access beyond the closed body for the feeder, paper and maintenance covers. Choose the MF729Cdw around this documented office workflow; choose a verified single-pass or smaller model when those requirements matter more.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm in black or color. Actual U.S. printer specification separately states two-sided output up to 10 pages or 5 sheets per minute; scan speeds are different.
Paper handling
250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet multipurpose source at the stated normal paper weights; optional 250-sheet drawer is excluded. Letter, Legal and A4 automatic print duplex are explicit. Envelopes: 10 in the drawer or 5 in the multipurpose source; Monarch uses that alternate source only.
Scanning arrangement
50-sheet Letter feeder with automatic two-sided computer capture and original range up to Legal. Physical duplex mechanism is not established as single-pass. Glass is up to 8.5 by 11.75 inches, not Legal.
Computer and mobile connections
USB device, standard 10/100 Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi for native printing and configured computer capture. Actual guide also documents direct mobile and Mac USB AirPrint arrangements, recorded separately.
Supplies and declared yields
Original supplied 118 set: black approximately 1,200 pages; composite CMY approximately 1,400 pages. Replacement 118 black approximately 3,400 pages and composite CMY approximately 2,900, using ISO/IEC 19798 on A4 at default density. A web Value Pack yield is not treated as one higher-yield cartridge.
Software and support
Native Secure Print uses a document PIN of up to seven digits. Default held-job expiry is 30 minutes and can be changed. Unreleased jobs occupy memory; Remote Scanner must be closed before panel release. This feature is separate from administrator and Department ID PINs.
Electrical edition and setup
U.S. original specifies 120–127 V, 60 Hz and 68.3 lb including toner. Closed body is 17 by 19.125 by 18.875 inches before the optional drawer; allow additional paper, feeder and maintenance access.
