Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF731Cdw print color Legal documents on both sides and scan a Legal stack in color to a registered Ethernet computer?
Yes. Native Legal duplex and simplex Legal feeder capture are documented. Register the IPv4 scanner and use the exact utility. Both original faces are not captured automatically.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically capture both sides of the original stack?
No. Exact MF731 specifies Duplex Scan: No and a simplex feeder. MF733/MF735 automatic both-face hardware is not inherited.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it provide analog fax as well as print, copy and scan?
No. This exact variant has three functions and no fax hardware. A generic software bundle mentioning a fax driver does not change that boundary.
Explore this need in the finder →Color duplex output with a one-sided original feeder
The Canon Color imageCLASS MF731Cdw is an earlier three-function color laser for printing, copying and scanning. It combines automatic print duplex with a simplex document feeder, so it suits an established office whose paper originals are mainly one-sided.
That distinction is the central decision. A two-sided printed report can be produced automatically, but a two-sided source stack cannot be captured automatically on this exact variant. The larger-model functions elsewhere in the shared guide should not obscure that limit.
Use the exact native software arrangement
The U.S. specification identifies UFR II for MF731Cdw. Install the appropriate supported printer and scanner software for the chosen USB, wired Ethernet or infrastructure wireless connection. A PCL or PostScript provision associated with another model is not assigned here.
Before printing, register the loaded paper size and type and check the application’s queue and driver settings. Page and output sizes can affect scaling, while the source and type need to describe the actual stock. Automatic two-sided output then remains a specific native-driver choice.
For Windows network capture, register the machine in MF Network Scanner Selector and use IPv4. The actual preparation chapter excludes an IPv6-only scanner arrangement. A USB connection does not need that network registration, but the machine should be awake before computer capture begins.
Match the original to the feeder or glass
MF Scan Utility, ScanGear or a compatible application provides the documented computer route. Choose a destination, format and suitable capture settings for the task. A successful printer installation alone does not prove that the scanner registration has been completed.
The feeder accepts Legal originals, while the glass is in the Letter/A4 class. The actual manual limits an ordinary feeder stack to fifty sheets at its stated weight and a Legal stack to thirty. A Legal glass requirement therefore fails even though Legal feeder capture is available.
The exact U.S. table explicitly says duplex scanning is unavailable. Treat a second face as a separate manual capture task, with page order checked afterward, or choose a model with a documented automatic both-face routine. Do not interpret the shared table’s duplex scan-speed rows as MF731 hardware.
Paper capacity and duplex stock remain separate questions
The included drawer and multipurpose source hold 250 and fifty normal sheets under the actual guide’s paper conditions. The additional 550-sheet AF module is optional. Its capacity is not counted in the base configuration.
The actual availability cells mark Letter, Legal and A4 for automatic duplex. Eligible media categories matter as well: the larger color-engine table includes its specified heavy-paper categories, while labels and envelopes are not automatic-duplex stock.
A general three-hundred-sheet headline does not establish the quantity for every exact size. Envelopes and specialty media use their own loading, source and type conditions, and the opened paper path needs more room than the closed body.
Keep held native output and mobile printing distinct
The exact shared operating chapter documents native Secured Print submission through Output Method and panel collection through the selected job, Start and PIN. Retained work occupies memory and expires after the configured interval, so it should be collected promptly.
Close a blocking Remote Scanner screen before releasing held work. AirPrint and Mopria are separately documented mobile output methods, but their applications do not automatically acquire every native-driver setting or the same PIN workflow.
MF731Cdw has no analog fax function. A generic bundled-software list mentioning a fax driver does not override the exact three-in-one identity. If fax is essential, that requirement needs another verified variant.
Evaluate the sustained workload and loaded size
Canon rates one-sided plain Letter printing at twenty-eight pages per minute in black or color, with a separate twenty-three-page duplex rating. The recommended monthly range is 750–4,000 pages, distinct from the fifty-thousand-page maximum duty.
The supplied 046 toner ratings differ from replacement color ratings: black is 2,200 pages and each supplied color is 1,200, under the stated ISO/IEC 19798 A4 conditions. Standard and high-capacity replacements have their own declared figures.
The actual MF731 body is 17¾ by 18½ by 18⅛ inches and weighs 58.4 pounds including toner. Its narrower width should not be replaced with the larger models’ dimension. Allow additional access space and verify the exact supported software before relying on this earlier configuration.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
28 one-sided plain Letter pages per minute in black or color; 23 duplex pages per minute is separate. Recommended monthly volume: 750–4,000, versus 50,000 maximum duty. Other models’ duplex scanning rates do not apply.
Paper handling
Included generic input: 250 + 50 sheets at 64/80 gsm; optional 550 excluded. Native Letter/Legal/A4 duplex includes documented Heavy 3 through 163 gsm, excluding labels/envelopes. Exact-size quantity is unknown.
Scanning arrangement
Exact MF731 has a simplex feeder and no automatic original duplex. It holds 50 ordinary originals at 80 gsm or 30 Legal originals. Glass is Letter/A4. A generic fax-driver bundle name does not establish fax hardware.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support registered IPv4 computer capture. Exact U.S. language listing is UFR II; neighboring PCL/PostScript scope is not assigned. Mobile direct mode is separate from ordinary LAN capture.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied 046: 2,200 black and 1,200 each C/M/Y. Replacement 046: 2,200 black and 2,300 each color; high-yield black 6,300 and each color 5,000 under ISO/IEC 19798 using A4 and default density. Cartridge 045 is not substituted.
Software and support
Exact shared operating instructions establish native Secured Print. Retention is configurable and jobs occupy memory; close Remote Scanner before collection. Native PIN controls are not assigned to AirPrint/Mopria. No current Google Cloud Print claim.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual MF731 body: 17¾ × 18½ × 18⅛ inches; 58.4 lb including toner. U.S. power: 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Open depth reaches 43¾ inches. MF733’s broader width is not substituted.
