Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF8280Cw print in color and capture loose Legal originals over Ethernet with a 150-sheet input?
Yes, with the supported native drivers and MF Toolbox setup. It prints color or monochrome Letter at up to 14 ppm and scans Legal originals through its one-sided feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it automatically print both sides of a document?
No. The exact MF8280Cw column marks duplex unavailable, and the shared guide limits that automatic operation to MF8580Cdw.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its Department ID password hold a document until I enter a print-release PIN?
No. Department ID management controls access and usage. The shared brochure assigns Secure Print to MF8580Cdw only.

The Canon Color imageCLASS MF8280Cw is an earlier U.S. color multifunction reference for printing, copying, scanning and telephone fax. Canon identifies it as 6848B001AA in the original shared brochure. Its seven-line color LCD and network connections support everyday document tasks, but several prominent features in that brochure belong only to MF8580Cdw.
The differences materially affect a working choice. MF8280Cw has a 150-sheet cassette, a one-sheet manual feed path and a simplex document feeder. Automatic print duplex, automatic two-sided original capture, Secure Print and direct sending to email or a shared folder are excluded from its exact model column.
Original intake is one-sided, with a shorter glass
The feeder accepts suitable loose originals up to Legal, with a 50-sheet stack declaration at 80 gsm. It scans one face of each sheet. A two-sided stack therefore needs manual handling rather than an automatic reversing or single-pass workflow.
The placement guide gives the glass area as 215.9 by 297 mm, covering Letter and A4 but not an entire Legal page. Use it for a small card, booklet or other material unsuited to feeding, and use the feeder for eligible loose Legal originals. ID Card Copy combines two manually positioned card faces onto a page; it is not evidence of an automatic two-sided scanner.
Fan and align feeder pages, fit the guides and stay below the load marks. The shared manual explicitly illustrates MF8580Cdw, so its pictures should not be treated as exact MF8280Cw product photos or as proof that the same controls and accessories are present.
Computer scanning has two useful entry points
For panel-directed capture, select Scan, then Computer, choose a destination and select the desired preset. The guide provides color PDF, monochrome TIFF and custom choices. USB destinations appear first when multiple computers are available. When using the glass for several pages, Scan Next Original and Store & Finish provide the documented sequence for completing the file.
For more computer-side control, choose Remote Scanner on the machine and open MF Toolbox. Select a purpose such as Save, PDF, OCR or Mail, inspect the settings and start capture. The PDF options distinguish a single page, multiple pages in one file and adding pages to an existing PDF; choose the actual output arrangement needed.
ScanGear MF adds preview and image adjustments through the scanner-driver option. These operating examples use Windows and require the supported MF Drivers and Toolbox installation. The manual directs Mac users to separate guides, and the product reference limits Linux to printing. A generic operating-system selector on a support page does not prove every capture feature.
Toolbox Mail prepares an attachment through computer software. That is different from the direct email or shared-folder sender explicitly restricted to MF8580Cdw. This distinction matters when a task must work without an available computer.
Color output does not bring automatic duplex
Canon declares up to 14 one-sided Letter ppm for either color or black output. The shared 21 ppm and two-sided 10 ppm figures belong to MF8580Cdw. MF8280Cw's native language is UFR II LT; the other model's PCL declaration is also excluded.
The normal cassette holds 150 sheets at the stated 20 lb bond basis. Its manual path handles one sheet. Ten cassette envelopes or one manual-path envelope are separately specified, so ordinary-paper capacity is not an envelope limit. Set the machine's loaded size and type to agree with the driver before printing, especially after changing media.
Automatic duplex is unavailable in the exact model column and the shared operating procedure is expressly titled for MF8580Cdw only. Neither a color engine nor an AirPrint listing changes that hardware boundary.
Access passwords and confidential release differ
Department ID management can monitor usage and control access, including color access. It does not make this model hold a job until a user enters a release PIN. The brochure's Secure Print procedure and security column reserve that function for MF8580Cdw.
AirPrint is separately documented for network printing, while Wi-Fi uses infrastructure mode. This review does not infer direct wireless operation or transfer native computer scanner controls into an unverified mobile application.
Plan for four supplies and substantial desk weight
The package column includes starter Cartridge 131 without establishing its supplied yield here. Replacement black is rated at 1,400 pages, high-yield black at 2,400 and each color at 1,500 under the brochure's ISO/IEC declaration. The neighboring model's Cartridge 118 should not be substituted.
The body is 17 inches wide, 19.1 deep and 16.9 high, weighing about 57.3 lb with cartridges. Allow additional opening and service room. Its 30,000-page maximum monthly duty is not a routine recommendation. Choose MF8280Cw when its color output, supported native capture and one-sided intake fit the task.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 14 one-sided Letter ppm in black or color. The shared brochure's 21 ppm simplex and 10 ppm duplex figures belong to MF8580Cdw, not this model.
Paper handling
Standard MF8280Cw cassette capacity is 150 normal sheets at 20 lb bond, with a single-sheet manual feed slot. Automatic duplex is unavailable. Ten cassette envelopes or one manual-path envelope are separately specified; the other model's 250-sheet cassette and 50-sheet bypass are excluded.
Scanning arrangement
The simplex feeder accepts suitable originals up to Legal and holds 50 sheets at 80 gsm. The actual placement guide gives 215.9 by 297 mm glass area for Letter/A4, not Legal. Use supported native software for USB or network computer capture; automatic two-sided input is unavailable.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, 10/100 Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support the documented native computer workflow. AirPrint is separately listed for network printing. Built-in Wi-Fi Direct and Mopria are not established.
Supplies and declared yields
The exact package column includes starter Cartridge 131, with supplied yield unestablished here. Replacement 131 black is rated 1,400 pages, 131 H black 2,400 and each color 1,500 under the brochure's ISO/IEC declaration. Do not assign the MF8580Cdw Cartridge 118.
Software and support
UFR II LT is the MF8280Cw printer language; the shared PCL, automatic duplex, Secure Print and direct email/shared-folder sending features are marked MF8580Cdw-only. Department ID management is available but does not hold confidential jobs for PIN release.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact MF8280Cw body is 17 by 19.1 by 16.9 inches and approximately 57.3 lb including cartridges. Leave loading, feeder-opening and cartridge-service room. The actual U.S. installation section specifies a standard grounded 120 V AC outlet.
