Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF8380Cdw capture both faces of Legal originals into a prepared SMB folder while printing native PIN-held duplex Letter color jobs over Ethernet?
Yes, on the supported LAN arrangement. Use the actual Windows (SMB) destination and 2-Sided Original control, plus the native driver’s secured-job workflow. Legal uses the feeder; the read sources do not establish a single-pass mechanism.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it be selected specifically for single-pass two-sided capture?
No single-pass mechanism is established. The actual model confirms automatic two-sided intake, which is recorded without guessing its physical method.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the glass capture a full Legal original?
No. The glass supports Letter and A4 dimensions; Legal originals require the feeder.

The Canon Color imageCLASS MF8380Cdw is an earlier color laser multifunction machine for printing, copying, computer capture and telephone fax. Its exact function matrix confirms automatic two-sided output and automatic two-sided feeder intake. Those functions distinguish it from the MF8080Cw discussed in the same manual.
The useful fit is a supported office installation needing color documents, native secured-job printing and a prepared network capture destination. The main original-handling limit is the glass: Legal originals require the feeder. The read originals also do not establish a single-pass scanning mechanism.
Use the appropriate source for the original
The glass reaches Letter and A4 dimensions, while the feeder accepts originals through 8.5 by 14 inches. Its capacity is 50 Letter originals at 80 gsm. That figure should not be treated as a guarantee for every thick or unusual document.
Fan and align a feeder stack, extend the support for long originals and load it face up. Keep within both load guides and align the side guides without squeezing. Remove completed originals from the return area, and do not add or remove pages while capture is running.
Books, photographs and suitable fragile material belong on the glass within its stated thickness and load limits. Optical resolution differs by route: the appendix declares up to 600 by 600 dpi on glass and 300 by 300 through the feeder. Interpolation does not replace those optical figures.
Computer presets and direct folder sending are different workflows
Supported native connections include USB, 10/100 Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi. Install the exact MF Drivers and MF Toolbox. The panel’s Computer workflow selects a USB-connected or registered network computer and an appropriate scan preset. An open MF Toolbox settings screen can prevent starting that panel operation.
The preset chapter does not itself show a two-sided-original control. This review therefore does not transfer the direct-send controls into an assumed USB desktop workflow. For a verified duplex folder arrangement, use the actual Windows (SMB) procedure on the supported LAN.
Prepare the server and folder settings, choose the registered SMB destination, then select Scan Size and 2-Sided Original before starting in color or black and white. Glass batches require capturing each page and selecting Start Sending when finished. Direct e-mail likewise needs its own mail-server preparation.
The manual’s computer examples use Windows. Its Mac appendix explicitly omits certain Searchable PDF, combined-PDF, WSD and print functions. Verify the intended Mac utility rather than assume all Windows options transfer.
Enable secured printing at both ends
The exact MF8380Cdw knowledge-base article describes actual PIN-held output. Enable Secure Print at the machine, configure the deletion period and restart. In the native driver’s Device Settings, allow secured printing, then choose Secured Print as the job’s Output Method.
Enter the document and user details with a PIN of up to seven digits. At the device, press Secure Print, select the user and document, and enter the matching PIN. Leave Remote Scanner mode first. Stored jobs consume memory and can affect other printing, so release them promptly before their configured timeout.
Duplex paper and input quantities have their own limits
The native driver defaults to two-sided printing. Choose Print Style and the binding edge, using a size and medium supported by the actual paper table. Its size footnote includes Letter, Legal and A4 for eligible automatic duplex. Do not pull the partly output sheet while it returns inside for its reverse face.
The base normal supply is 250 cassette sheets plus 50 in the multipurpose tray. The optional 250-sheet V1 is excluded. Heavier stock, labels and envelopes have separate quantities. A generic 300-sheet normal supply is not a capacity promise for every size or medium.
Starter yields and duplex speed are easy to misread
The original manual rates the supplied 118 Black Starter at 1,200 sheets and the composite CMY starters at 1,400. Replacement 118 Black is 3,400 and composite CMY 2,900. These declarations use ISO/IEC 19798 on A4 at default density, and black-and-white printing can affect color-toner life.
One-sided plain-Letter output is rated up to 21 ppm in color or monochrome. Two-sided output is separately stated as 10 pages, or five sheets, per minute. The 40,000-page maximum monthly duty is not a recommended workload.
The operating body measures 17 by 19⅛ by 18⅞ inches and weighs approximately 68.3 lb including toner. Allow substantially more room for the open feeder, extended paper and service access than the closed body occupies.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 21 one-sided plain-Letter ppm in color or monochrome. Two-sided Letter is up to 10 pages per minute, explicitly five sheets per minute. Scanner optical figures are separate: glass 600 by 600 dpi, feeder 300 by 300 dpi.
Paper handling
Standard normal input is 250 cassette plus 50 multipurpose, optional 250-sheet V1 excluded. Actual size footnote marks Letter/Legal/A4 for eligible automatic duplex. Envelopes have separate source and quantity limits.
Scanning arrangement
50 Letter originals at 80 gsm; Legal feeder, Letter/A4 glass. Automatic two-sided intake is confirmed, but its physical mechanism is unestablished. Actual SMB procedure includes Scan Size and 2-Sided Original controls.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, 10/100 Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are documented. The native language is UFR II LT. Wi-Fi Direct and particular mobile protocols are not established by these read operating originals.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied 118 Black Starter is rated 1,200 sheets; composite CMY starters 1,400. Replacement 118 Black 3,400 and composite CMY 2,900. Actual manual basis is ISO/IEC 19798 on A4 at default density. Black-and-white use can affect color-toner life.
Software and support
Native secured jobs require machine and driver enablement, a PIN and panel release. Direct SMB/email destinations need preparation. Mac lacks some Searchable PDF/combined-PDF and print functions in the Windows examples. Maximum duty 40,000 is not a recommended monthly range.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual operating body is 17 by 19⅛ by 18⅞ inches and approximately 68.3 lb including toner. Optional V1 raises height. U.S. power is 120–127 V, 60 Hz; full operating clearance is much larger.
