FAXPHONE L190Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A local fax and copy desk that needs supported Legal duplex computer printing.

The main tradeoff

The glass is smaller than Legal, and its automatic fax/copy original reader does not establish computer scanning.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can it automatically print Legal documents over USB while keeping 250 sheets of plain paper loaded?

Yes. The exact U.S. paper table marks Legal for automatic two-sided printing and gives the cassette 250 sheets at 60–80 gsm. Use the installed printer driver and its binding setting.

Can its duplex feeder scan both sides into files on my USB-connected computer?

No. Automatic original reading is documented for fax and copy, while the computer workflow is printing. It is not a verified desktop scanner.

Can I put it on Ethernet for shared printing without another device?

No. The exact-model standard computer interface is USB; a telephone-line socket is not an Ethernet connection.

A paper-fax machine with genuine two-sided routines

The Canon FAXPHONE L190 suits a desk where telephone fax and paper copying remain important, with a USB connection adding monochrome computer printing. Its useful distinction is automatic two-sided operation: the exact guide documents two-sided computer printing and automatic reading of both sides of originals for fax and copying. The deciding boundary is equally important. Canon scopes the product as Print, Copy and Fax; those original-reading functions do not establish a scanner that saves files to your computer.

Canon's U.S. product page identifies this as a discontinued model, so this is an earlier reference rather than a current availability claim. The published one-sided Letter print rating is up to 26 pages per minute. A separately listed two-sided rating should remain separate from that figure. The 10,000-page maximum duty cycle is also a maximum, not a recommended monthly workload; the reviewed exact specifications do not supply a recommendation to substitute for it.

The glass and feeder accept different originals

There really is a platen glass on the L190. The Basic Operation Guide shows it and gives an original area up to 8.5 by 11.75 inches, allowing Letter or A4 placement but not a full Legal page. The feeder extends to 8.5 by 14 inches and has a 50-sheet Letter capacity at the stated paper weight. Use the glass for an appropriate book page or small original, and the feeder for a stack of loose documents.

The distinction matters even when a menu offers a Legal choice. Canon specifically warns in the copying instructions that a Legal selection with a document on the glass still scans the actual A4-size area. A menu cannot enlarge the glass. For two-sided feeder originals, the documented weight range starts at 60 gsm, compared with 50 gsm for one-sided originals. The copy controls provide two-to-two and two-to-one routines, while the fax menu offers book or calendar original binding. Those are useful automatic workflows, but the sources do not establish single-pass mechanics or a computer scanning route.

Legal duplex printing is supported; Legal received-fax output is different

The original computer-printing chapter tells the user to install the printer driver, choose two-sided printing and select a binding edge. The exact U.S. e-Manual paper table then resolves the media question: Letter, Legal and A4 are among the sizes marked for automatic two-sided output. That is positive evidence for Legal duplex printing, rather than an assumption based on accepting Legal paper in the cassette.

The same table gives received-fax printing a narrower range: use Letter or A4. Canon warns that another paper size can cut off or split the received image. An office can therefore print its own Legal document from the computer without treating Legal as an equally supported default for incoming faxes. Set the installed paper and machine preferences around the task that must work unattended.

The single cassette holds 250 sheets of ordinary 60–80 gsm paper. At above 80 through 90 gsm, the plain-paper allowance drops to 170 sheets. It also accepts up to 20 envelopes, but those are a separate one-sided routine and replace the ordinary stack. There is no basis for counting the fax memory as another paper tray or adding a hypothetical optional cassette to the included capacity.

USB setup, toner and installation space

The normal computer arrangement is USB with the appropriate exact-model driver. The telephone line serves fax separately; it is not Ethernet, and the product's fax capability does not add network printing. Computer-to-fax sending, where configured with its fax driver, is also a different task from capturing paper into a computer file. If searchable document archives are essential, choose a multifunction printer with an explicitly supported desktop scan application and connection.

Canon specifies Cartridge 128 as the replacement consumable, with an approximate 2,100-page ISO/IEC 19752 yield. The reviewed sections do not establish an included-cartridge yield, so that replacement rating should not be assigned to the original box. The guide also explains what happens when toner becomes nearly empty: incoming faxes can be stored rather than printed, with an optional continuation setting that may produce faint output. That behavior is worth configuring before relying on the machine overnight.

The U.S. e-Manual gives a 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz supply and approximately 31.3 lb including toner. The body is 18.625 inches wide, 17.5 inches deep and 14.125 inches high, but Canon's installation-space requirement is much larger. Allow access to the glass, feeder, paper cassette and consumable covers. The L190 is most coherent when those local paper routines are the goal; a networked multifunction model is the more suitable alternative when shared printing and computer document capture must happen together.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 26 one-sided Letter pages per minute. The separately advertised 16 ppm two-sided figure is not converted to sheets per minute.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette at 60–80 gsm; heavier plain stock reduces capacity. The actual U.S. paper table permits automatic two-sided Letter, Legal and A4 printing. Received-fax printing is restricted to Letter or A4. Envelopes: up to 20 in the cassette, without automatic duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Physical glass accepts up to 8.5 by 11.75 inches; the feeder accepts up to Legal with automatic two-sided original reading for fax/copy. No computer scan-to-file route is established. The method is not labeled single-pass.

Computer and mobile connections

USB device interface provides computer printing. Telephone fax and standalone copy are additional local functions; there is no standard Ethernet or Wi-Fi arrangement in the exact specifications.

Supplies and declared yields

Canon Cartridge 128 replacement rated approximately 2,100 pages using ISO/IEC 19752. Included-cartridge yield is not established in the read exact-source sections.

Electrical edition and setup

U.S. e-Manual: 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz; 31.3 lb including toner. Closed body dimensions are separate from the much larger specified installation space. The actual glass is not Legal size.
