imageCLASS D1170Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An established wired office needing Legal glass capture and native Legal duplex output.

The main tradeoff

USB ScanGear and LAN file-server sending need different setup; no built-in Wi-Fi route is established.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can D1170 handle Legal monochrome duplex printing and color scanning from the Legal glass over USB?

Yes, with the supported native printer and USB ScanGear arrangement. The actual guide permits Legal on the glass and in the automatic print-duplex path; set the rear paper-size lever correctly. Color capture does not make the printed output color.

Can I replace that cable with built-in Wi-Fi for the same routine?

A built-in Wi-Fi route is not established. The documented connections are USB and Fast Ethernet, and network file-server sending has its own configuration.

Does the normal D1170 include 1050 input sheets?

No. Its included cassette and multipurpose source total 550 sheets under the stated paper basis. Reaching 1050 requires the optional 500-sheet module.

A Legal-size glass changes the document workflow

The Canon imageCLASS D1170 is an earlier monochrome laser multifunction printer with a particularly useful original-size distinction: both its glass and feeder accept Legal documents. It can suit an established office that needs to capture a bound or delicate Legal original without forcing it through an automatic feeder.

That capability accompanies native automatic two-sided printing, analog fax and wired networking. The deciding condition is software and connection planning. Its USB computer-scanner routine and network file-server routine are different operations, and neither is a reason to assume built-in wireless.

Choose the supported capture route before installation

For an attached computer, install the exact USB scanner driver. The actual guide explicitly restricts ScanGear to USB and says that the desktop scanning procedure is not available over a network. Press Scan and Start for the configured computer operation, or use the documented MF Toolbox arrangement.

D1170 nevertheless has a separate positive network capture function: sending to an SMB file server. Prepare the network cable and address settings, the shared folder, access credentials and a registered destination. The file-server address is selected from registered address controls rather than entered as a telephone number.

The panel sequence is unusually easy to misread. The guide uses the Send/Fax button and the E-MAIL: COLOR or E-MAIL: B& W selection even when the selected destination is a file server. Then choose the format and resolution and start capture. A successfully installed network printer queue alone does not complete this setup.

Handle originals according to size and weight

Place glass originals face down against the size alignment, or fan and align suitable feeder originals face up. Do not add or remove originals during feeder scanning. The actual feeder limit is fifty ordinary originals but thirty Legal originals at the stated 80 gsm basis.

The manual identifies two-sided file-server original settings and specifies a separate weight range for two-sided originals. It does not establish the physical duplex mechanism in the sections read, so this is not presented as single-pass scanning. The glass remains the useful alternative for originals that should not travel through the feeder.

Color file capture and monochrome output are separate abilities. Color PDF, compact PDF or JPEG choices have their own restrictions; compact PDF uses the documented fixed resolution. Dividing a multipage job into separate files is another explicit setting, with JPEG handled separately.

Duplex printing requires a physical size adjustment

Install the supported UFR II LT printer driver, choose the printer in the application and configure the required settings before sending the job. The shared guide’s PCL provision belongs only to D1180, so it should not be assigned to D1170.

Automatic two-sided printing accepts Letter, Legal and A4. Before using it, close the sub-output tray and check the blue size-switch lever behind the duplex cover. Its position differs between A4 and Letter or Legal. Selecting a paper size in the application does not move that lever.

The included 500-sheet cassette and fifty-sheet multipurpose source provide 550 sheets under the guide’s paper-weight basis. The additional 500-sheet module is optional. The general capacity is not treated as a verified quantity for every exact size or specialty medium.

Read the toner and physical specifications in context

The supplied Cartridge 120 Starter is rated for 2,300 pages, while the replacement Cartridge 120 is rated for five thousand. Those are ISO/IEC 19752 declarations using A4 and default print density; document content changes actual consumption.

Canon rates one-sided Letter output at thirty pages per minute. The twenty-thousand-page maximum monthly duty is a different measure and does not establish a recommended sustained monthly workload.

The actual operating guide gives a body of 17¾ by 18⅝ by 18¼ inches and a U.S. 120–127-volt, 60-hertz supply. Opened trays and servicing need more room, and the optional cassette changes the height. Confirm the exact supported driver and the intended capture workflow before relying on this historical model in a present-day office.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

30 one-sided Letter print ppm. Maximum monthly duty 20000 is not a recommended monthly volume. No duplex speed inferred.

Paper handling

500 plus 50 included generic input at 80 gsm. Optional 500 excluded. Automatic duplex Letter/Legal/A4 requires the correct rear lever and closed sub-output tray. Actual output capacity 65 sheets controls the conflicting web listing.

Scanning arrangement

Legal glass and Legal feeder. ADF 50 ordinary originals or 30 Legal at 80 gsm, duplex originals 64–105 gsm. Automatic two-sided send is documented without a confirmed physical mechanism; not single-pass.

Computer and mobile connections

Native USB and Fast Ethernet printing. ScanGear computer scanning is USB-only. Exact D1170 also has LAN SMB send and analog fax; PCL is D1180-only. No built-in wireless route established.

Supplies and declared yields

Canon Cartridge 120 Starter supplied: 2300 pages. Cartridge 120 replacement: 5000 pages under ISO/IEC 19752, A4, default density. Actual content changes yield.

Software and support

Use the D1170 UFR II LT route; shared-guide generic PCL is explicitly restricted to D1180. USB ScanGear and SMB sending require their respective setup. No current OS or retired cloud-service promise.

Electrical edition and setup

Actual 17¾ by 18⅝ by 18¼ inches and U.S. 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Optional cassette changes height. Loaded weight left unknown because unqualified web and actual-guide figures conflict. Allow operating clearance beyond body dimensions.
