Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can D480 print monochrome duplex documents and scan Legal sheets to a compatible wired Windows computer?
Yes for the documented native wired arrangement, with paper size left flexible for automatic printing duplex. Install Color Network ScanGear separately and select the scanner. Legal originals fit the feeder; the actual guide limits their stack to ten.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I put a complete Legal original on its scanner glass?
No. Its glass is shorter than Legal; the separate feeder is the documented Legal input route.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the duplex feeder read both sides in one pass?
No. The actual original describes turning a two-sided document over and scanning the two sides separately. That is not single-pass capture.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired multifunction reference with important software limits
The Canon imageCLASS D480 is an earlier monochrome multifunction machine for a compatible computer setup that needs printing, copying, scanning and telephone fax. Its original installation guide positively documents both USB and wired Ethernet. That matters because the surviving U.S. specification table lists USB alone: the actual network setup and scanner-installation chapters establish a wider wired capability than that abbreviated row suggests.
The deciding caution is the computer software. USB capture uses ScanGear MF and MF Toolbox, while network capture uses a separate Color Network ScanGear installation. These are older, differently constrained routes. Before relying on a used unit, confirm that the intended computer can run the exact tools required for its connection and scanning task; seeing the printer in a print dialog is not enough.
Use the scanner area that fits the original
The glass accommodates ordinary Letter and A4 placement, but it is shorter than a full Legal sheet. The feeder has a separate maximum of 8.5 by 14 inches. Use that route for suitable Legal originals, and reserve the glass for books, photographs or delicate material that fits the smaller area.
Canon's actual Starter Guide confirms a duplex automatic feeder. The reproduced original Basic Operation Guide explains that it turns a two-sided original over and scans its sides separately for faxing. That is automatic two-sided handling, with a reversing mechanism rather than a single-pass scanner. Computer file-capture controls still need their own software support; fax input settings are not treated here as proof that every computer scan dialog offers the same duplex mode.
There is also a capacity conflict worth preserving. The U.S. webpage advertises a 50-sheet feeder, while the actual document-loading table in the reproduced Basic Guide limits normal 80 gsm originals to 35 sheets and Legal originals to ten. This assessment follows the operating table for practical loading. Keep stacks within the applicable limit and avoid wrinkled, coated, torn, stapled or otherwise unsuitable originals.
USB and Ethernet use different capture routines
For USB, the original installation sequence puts the software on the computer before connecting the cable. ScanGear MF provides the scanner driver, and MF Toolbox 4.9 handles importing, saving or forwarding scanned images. The original USB setup excludes Windows Server 2003 and Server 2008. Those edition restrictions are part of the documented arrangement, not a promise that every subsequent Windows release behaves identically.
For wired networking, connect the 10/100 Ethernet port, establish the IP configuration and install the network drivers. Color Network ScanGear is a separate installation, with the actual scanner selected through ScanGear Tool. The original bundled network scanner software excludes all 64-bit operating systems. The basic capture procedure also warns that printing a received fax can interrupt network scanning, requiring another scan after the fax output finishes.
Both routes support color capture even though printing and copying are monochrome. The network and USB scanner specifications have different resolution conditions; the USB optical figure should not be presented as the network capture limit. Neither the Ethernet port nor a modern app's general name establishes Wi-Fi, AirPrint or Mopria on this exact machine.
Paper, automatic printing duplex and the telephone line
The Basic Guide gives a 250-sheet cassette and a one-sheet multipurpose feed. The manual feed is useful for an occasional separate sheet, not another full stack. Legal loading leaves the cassette's front panel open, extends the guide and uses the dust cover in its instructed position. Match paper settings to the loaded size rather than leaving the original Letter default in place.
Computer duplex printing is positively documented through the driver's Finishing and Print Style controls, including the binding-edge choice. The exact supported automatic-duplex size subset is not established in the sections read, so this assessment does not promise a specific duplex size from the general paper-acceptance list.
Fax requires its separate telephone cable and receive-mode setup. The original guide distinguishes fax-only, fax/telephone switching, answering-machine and manual reception. It also calls out how an external telephone or answering machine must be connected. A working network cable does not replace those telephone preparations.
Supplies and a sensible comparison
Canon declares up to 23 one-sided Letter ppm and a 7,500-page maximum monthly duty. No recommended recurring monthly volume is substituted for that maximum. Replacement Cartridge 104 is declared at 2,000 pages using a five-percent-coverage document; the supplied toner yield remains unassigned.
The original U.S. guide specifies 120–127 V at 60 Hz and approximately 32 lb including toner. Several body measurements conflict, so verify the actual installation space before choosing a tight shelf. D480 makes sense as a documented legacy wired workflow. For a new computer environment, compare a model with positively supported current capture software and the exact duplex scanning controls the office requires.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Exact U.S. declaration is up to 23 one-sided Letter ppm. Maximum monthly duty is 7,500 pages; no recommended recurring monthly range is established.
Paper handling
Actual Basic Guide gives a 250-sheet cassette plus one-sheet multipurpose feed. Legal loading extends the cassette with its front open and dust cover positioned. Native automatic duplex is documented, but its exact supported size subset remains unassigned.
Scanning arrangement
Exact original Starter Guide confirms a duplex feeder. The reproduced Basic Guide explicitly turns originals over for duplex fax input, so it is not single-pass. Its working document table gives 35 normal sheets at 80 gsm and 10 Legal, conflicting with the web 50-sheet headline. Glass is smaller than Legal; exact computer duplex-input controls remain unassigned.
Computer and mobile connections
Actual original documents USB and standard 10/100 Ethernet for printing and computer scanning. USB uses MF Toolbox/ScanGear MF; Ethernet uses Color Network ScanGear. No Wi-Fi, AirPrint or Mopria route is established.
Supplies and declared yields
Canon U.S. specifies replacement Cartridge 104 at 2,000 pages using a 5% coverage document. Included-cartridge yield is not established and is not inferred from replacement capacity.
Software and support
Original software has significant operating-system limits. USB ScanGear MF and MF Toolbox exclude the listed Server editions; bundled Color Network ScanGear excludes all 64-bit operating systems. Verify the exact installed driver and computer before relying on an older machine.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual reproduced U.S. guide specifies 120–127 V at 60 Hz and approximately 32 lb including toner. Width is 15.375 inches. Depth and height have inconsistent inch/mm and web declarations, so those fit limits remain unassigned. Allow the documented open-cassette and feeder space.
