imageCLASS D661Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An established compatible USB desk needing monochrome output, envelopes and standalone original copying.

The main tradeoff

D680-only fax is excluded, and no computer scanning or automatic duplex route is established.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a supported USB computer print monochrome Legal documents and supported envelopes through D661?

Yes. Native CAPT output and the U.S. paper handling support those separate routines. Select the correct physical output size, source and type; envelope loading uses the multipurpose tray.

Does its USB printing software establish computer scanning?

No documented computer-capture route is established. The physical glass and feeder serve the documented copy workflow, and CAPT is the printer software.

Does D661 provide all four print, scan, copy and fax functions because the manual illustrates D680?

No. The family guide explicitly confines fax to D680. D661 does not inherit those controls or functions.

A historical printer and copier with a clear model boundary

The Canon imageCLASS D661 is an earlier monochrome laser printer and copier for an established computer setup that can still use its exact native software. Its glass and feeder handle standalone originals, including suitable Legal documents.

The deciding boundary is the shared manual. It often illustrates D680, but explicitly confines fax to that model. D661 does not gain fax controls or a computer-capture workflow because those words or scanner parts appear elsewhere in the family documentation.

CAPT is the computer printing arrangement

The original printer guide describes Canon Advanced Printing Technology and its matching computer queue. Install the supported USB driver using the applicable sequence, select the queue in the application’s print dialog and open Properties.

The manual distinguishes a setting changed through an application, which applies to that print job, from a setting changed through the Windows printer folder, which remains a default. That distinction helps explain why a later document may retain an unexpected layout.

Page Size describes the application document, while Output Size describes the physical sheet. A different output size scales the content. The presence of a large source-document size in a driver list does not mean that the printer accepts that large physical sheet.

Match the source and medium before output

The driver’s Paper Source tab selects the cassette or multipurpose tray and the appropriate paper type. The cassette is restricted to ordinary supported stock; the special-media selections belong to the multipurpose route. Choose the source deliberately when changing from normal documents to envelopes.

The actual U.S. reference instructions and specification state a 500-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet multipurpose source on their normal-paper basis. A separate printer-guide appendix describes an A4 cassette with a 250-sheet figure. These source conditions are preserved separately; the smaller regional appendix is not silently substituted for the U.S. configuration.

The general 600-sheet total also is not treated as a verified quantity for every exact paper size. The U.S. cassette instructions describe Letter and Legal guide positions, while the multipurpose source supports the wider documented media range.

Copy originals through the appropriate physical route

Use the glass for a book, delicate original or a document unsuitable for the feeder. Align it to the size marks and close the assembly gently. The glass copy length defaults to 330 mm; the additional settings allow 356 mm for a full Legal-length original.

For an appropriate stack, remove any original from the glass, fan and align the pages, adjust the feeder guide and load them face down. The feeder quantity is thirty Letter or A4 originals, or fifteen Legal originals, at the stated weight basis.

That physical capture is documented for copying. It is not represented as computer scanning over USB. Likewise, no color-capture function or single-pass duplex mechanism is assigned without the missing applicable operating evidence.

Two-sided copy instructions require manual handling

The reference guide’s two-sided copy routine first produces one face, then asks the operator to turn the copy over and insert it into the multipurpose tray for the next original. Directional portrait and landscape originals require their respective orientations.

This is useful operating guidance, but it is manual refeeding. It does not establish automatic print duplex, automatic two-sided original capture or a native driver duplex mode. An office requiring those functions should confirm them on separately documented hardware.

Evaluate supplies, speed and installation honestly

The L50 replacement is declared at approximately 5,000 copies using A4 with five-percent black coverage. That is a copy-yield basis, not a separately established supplied yield or an ISO19752 figure. No current running cost is calculated from it.

The printer appendix’s twelve pages per minute is explicitly A4, while the U.S. reference’s thirteen-per-minute figure is Letter copying. Neither becomes an independently documented one-sided Letter print speed. Recommended workload also remains unknown.

The U.S. reference gives an 18¾ by 17⅜ by 15⅛-inch body and 52.9-pound weight including cartridge. Output access and the open multipurpose source enlarge the installation. Confirm exact software support before depending on this historical USB printer/copier, especially when the intended routine also needs fax, shared network access or computer original capture.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The separate printer appendix states 12 A4 pages per minute; the U.S. reference states 13 Letter copies per minute. Neither is converted into an explicit one-sided Letter printer benchmark. Recommended volume and maximum duty are unknown.

Paper handling

U.S. operating chapter/specification: 500-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet multipurpose source at 80 gsm. The separate printer-guide A4 cassette figure is not used as the U.S. package. Exact-size quantity is unknown.

Scanning arrangement

Physical scanner serves standalone copying: 30 Letter/A4 or 15 Legal originals at 80 gsm. Glass length defaults to 330 mm and can be set to 356 mm for Legal. Computer/color capture is unestablished.

Computer and mobile connections

Native CAPT computer printing is documented through USB and a separate bidirectional parallel interface. No built-in Ethernet, Wi-Fi or mobile output is inferred from Windows printer-sharing instructions.

Supplies and declared yields

Canon L50 replacement: approximately 5,000 copies using A4 at 5% black coverage. This is a copy-yield declaration, not ISO/IEC 19752 or a separately established supplied yield.

Software and support

Application Print/Properties settings apply to that job; settings opened through the Windows printer folder become defaults. CAPT status can pause, resume or delete output. Manual reverse-face copying is not automatic print duplex or automatic original duplex.

Electrical edition and setup

U.S. body: 18¾ × 17⅜ × 15⅛ inches; 52.9 lb including cartridge. Power: 120 V, 60 Hz. Output tray and open multipurpose source enlarge installation width. D680’s illustrated fax controls do not apply.
