imageCLASS D880Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

An existing legacy installation needing Legal-size copying and telephone fax alongside supported direct USB printing.

The main tradeoff

No verified computer capture or built-in wireless route is assigned, and two-sided copying requires manual paper reinsertion.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can D880 print monochrome Letter documents through its documented legacy USB computer setup?

Yes, with the exact CAPT driver and a historically supported system. The actual USB setup covers Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP and Server 2003; an interface cable is not included.

Can its Legal glass be selected as a verified scanner for saving files to a USB-connected computer?

No verified computer capture route is assigned. The original glass and feeder procedures establish copying and D880 fax intake, which does not itself establish computer export.

Does its base configuration provide Wi-Fi printing?

No built-in Wi-Fi arrangement is established. The actual setup documents direct USB and parallel connections.

A legacy fax and copier whose computer role uses CAPT

The Canon imageCLASS D880 combines monochrome computer printing with standalone copying and telephone fax. Its actual U.S. manuals identify fax as a D880-specific function within the shared D880/D860/D861 family. The exact support record is retired, so this review serves as an operating reference rather than a claim of current availability.

Its useful strengths are a substantial normal-paper supply and Legal-size original handling. Its computer connection remains a historical direct-driver arrangement. Do not infer network scanning or modern mobile services from the presence of a document feeder and fax memory.

Install the correct USB driver for the historical system

The original setup documents both USB and parallel, with different installation instructions. Its USB section covers Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP and Server 2003. Turn the computer off before making the connection, then follow the hardware-detection process and choose the driver folder corresponding to that operating system.

CAPT, Canon Advanced Printing Technology, is the documented printer system. The separate parallel examples should not be applied indiscriminately to a USB job. Interface cables are not included in the setup package, and the read material does not establish compatibility with every later workstation.

No computer scanning procedure is established. The machine's glass and feeder capture an image internally for copying or fax, but that alone does not show how to export a file to the connected computer. This review therefore assigns no scan-to-computer route.

Legal copying includes a glass-length adjustment

Both the glass and feeder accept originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches. When copying from the glass, check Maximum Scan Length in Copy Settings: the guide permits 330 mm or 356 mm. The longer setting matters when content reaches toward the end of a Legal original.

Original quantities are 30 Letter or A4 sheets, but 15 Legal sheets, at 80 gsm. Load the feeder face down after removing any original from the glass. The operating diagram describes feeding from the top of the stack, beginning with the last page, so verify the prescribed order rather than using assumptions from another feeder.

For two-sided copies, the operator copies the first face, turns that output over and reinserts it in the multipurpose tray before copying the next original. This is a manual workflow. It does not establish automatic print duplex or automatic capture of both original faces.

Fax setup is a telephone workflow of its own

Connect the telephone line to the D880 line jack and any appropriate telephone or answering machine to the external-device jack. Choose the receive mode that matches the installation. FaxOnly is for a fax-only line, FaxTel distinguishes fax and voice calls with a telephone attached, and AnsMode expects an answering machine arrangement.

When sending a feeder batch, select Fax, prepare and load the originals, choose an appropriate resolution, dial the destination and start capture. Memory sending calls the recipient after originals have been stored. Higher resolution can increase transmission time.

Glass faxing uses the documented Book Sending sequence. Clear the feeder, choose the document size, capture each glass page and use Set to finish and send. The approximately 255-page memory declaration uses the ITU-T No. 1 Chart in Standard mode; dense documents consume more memory. It is not the quantity of originals that fit in the feeder.

The cassette has a narrower role than the multipurpose path

The cassette holds approximately 500 normal sheets at 80 gsm and adjusts for Letter or Legal. Other suitable sizes or special stock use the multipurpose tray, whose normal-paper limit is 100 sheets under its stated stack conditions. Labels and transparencies should not be loaded into the cassette.

Set the multipurpose paper size when loading, flatten curled stock and keep the stack beneath the guide. Transparencies are loaded one at a time. A nominal 600-sheet normal supply should not be treated as a capacity promise for every medium or original size.

Read the D880 cartridge basis exactly

The setup includes L50 S, rated at approximately 2,500 prints. L50 is rated at approximately 5,000. This particular Basic Guide specifies an LTR original at 5% coverage; it does not use the A4 wording found in some other Canon references or claim an ISO basis.

The body measures 18¾ inches wide, 17⅜ deep and 15⅛ high, weighing approximately 52.9 lb including the cartridge. Installation width reaches 32½ inches with the output tray attached and multipurpose tray open. The appendix's 18 Letter and 12 Legal copies per minute remain copy measurements; they are not silently assigned as verified computer print throughput.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The actual appendix declares COPY speeds of 18 Letter cpm and 12 Legal cpm. A Letter printing ppm value is not established and is left null rather than borrowed from copying.

Paper handling

500 normal cassette sheets plus 100 multipurpose sheets at 80 gsm. The cassette adjusts for Letter or Legal; other suitable sizes/media use the multipurpose path. Feeder originals are 30 Letter/A4 or 15 Legal at 80 gsm.

Scanning arrangement

Both glass and feeder support Legal originals for copying and fax. Glass copy length can be set to 330 or 356 mm. This is not a verified computer capture arrangement.

Computer and mobile connections

Standard USB and parallel computer printing are documented. No included Ethernet or wireless arrangement is established. Telephone fax uses the D880 line jack and a separately chosen receive mode.

Supplies and declared yields

Setup includes L50 S, rated approximately 2,500 prints; L50 is rated approximately 5,000. The exact D880 Basic Guide specifies an LTR original at 5% coverage, not A4 or an ISO yield basis.

Software and support

CAPT is the documented native printer system. Fax memory of approximately 255 pages uses ITU-T No. 1 Chart in Standard mode and is not a feeder capacity or workload recommendation. Computer scanning and PIN-held job release remain unestablished.

Electrical edition and setup

Operating body is 18¾ by 17⅜ by 15⅛ inches and approximately 52.9 lb including cartridge. Installation width reaches 32½ inches with output tray attached and multipurpose tray open. U.S. power is 120 V, 60 Hz.
