Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can LBP227dw print PIN-held duplex Letter monochrome jobs over supported Ethernet with 350 included Letter sheets and a 3,000-page monthly requirement?
Yes, using the supported native driver. Eligible Letter duplex and PIN release coexist in that arrangement, the base sources total 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond, and the declared recommended range reaches 4,000 pages monthly.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its color touchscreen make it a color printer?
No. The exact output scope is monochrome. The five-inch color panel is an interface, not a color print engine.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it capture documents to a computer and make copies?
No. LBP227dw is a print-only model without an original scanner or copier.

The Canon imageCLASS LBP227dw is an earlier monochrome laser printer for a small office that already has a scanning arrangement. It combines automatic duplex output, a five-inch color touchscreen and native PIN-held printing. The panel’s color display does not mean color output, and this is not a scanner, copier or telephone fax.
The preserved U.S. row and support table identify item 3516C005. The read older brochure prints 3516C004. Check the actual package code rather than assuming those sales packages are interchangeable. This review keeps that difference visible while using the exact LBP227dw operating manual for hardware and workflow distinctions.
Choose UFR II or PCL for the native computer arrangement
USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are documented native connections. Install the exact supported driver for the computer, open the document’s print dialog, select Preferences or Properties, set the job and submit it.
Standard printer languages are UFR II, PCL6 and PCL5. The shared manual explicitly reserves its PS printer function for LBP228dw and LBP226dw. A generic operating-system heading that includes PS does not override that model restriction.
The USB device connection serves the computer. USB host ports have a different role, allowing supported memory files to be selected at the machine. I-Fax receiving is another print source; it does not add a feeder, original scanner or analog telephone fax.
PIN-held output has an actual release sequence
In the native driver, select Secured Print as the Output Method and send the job with its settings. The document waits in device memory. At the touch panel, select Secure Print, choose the document, select Start and enter the matching PIN.
Multiple jobs with the same PIN can be selected together. Different PINs need separate handling. Stored jobs consume memory and disappear after the configured deletion period, so collect them promptly. This is temporary held output, not a permanent document archive.
Department ID authentication controls usage under registered identities. It is a different function from the PIN attached to a particular print job, even though this printer documents both.
The included configuration holds 350 Letter sheets
The base cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray 100, totaling 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond. The advertised 900-sheet maximum requires the optional 550-sheet AH1 cassette. If installed later, that cassette must also be configured in the driver’s Device Settings.
The actual operating paper table marks Letter, Legal and A4 for automatic duplex on eligible stock. Size and medium both matter: labels, envelopes and the heavier multipurpose-only categories do not use the same automatic path as ordinary supported paper.
Keep the cassette inserted even when printing from the multipurpose tray; the guide says printing otherwise stops with an error. Extend the multipurpose support for larger sheets, load print side up and set the actual size and type.
Envelopes and mobile jobs have separate conditions
Envelopes cannot be loaded in the cassette. Flatten curls, close and flatten the flaps, then load the supported envelope in the multipurpose tray with the non-glued front face up and the short edge toward the machine. The ten-envelope quantity is separate from normal-paper capacity, and reverse-side envelope printing is unsupported.
AirPrint can use a shared LAN or supported direct connection, with IPP enabled. The actual Apple procedure says available settings and paper sizes depend on the application. This review therefore keeps native PIN controls and precise native duplex-size evidence separate from the AirPrint arrangement. Mopria and Canon PRINT Business are also listed mobile options.
Supplies, speed and body weight need their stated basis
The actual model manual lists an included 057 cartridge rated for 3,100 sheets. Replacement 057 has the same nominal rating, while optional 057 H is rated for 10,000. The basis is ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The high-yield figure is not the included supply quantity.
Canon declares up to 40 one-sided Letter ppm and separately 32 Legal ppm, with a recommended monthly range of 750–4,000 pages. The operating body is 17¼ inches wide, 14¾ deep and 12¼ high. Its stated 20.3 lb excludes toner; loaded weight is unestablished here. Leave room beyond the body for extended trays, cover access and supply replacement.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 40 one-sided Letter ppm; Legal is separately declared at 32 ppm. The manual describes repeated one-page continuous plain-Letter testing and possible condition-adjustment pauses.
Paper handling
Included 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond, 250 plus 100. Maximum 900 requires optional AH1. Labels and envelopes use the multipurpose path; ten envelopes is a separate quantity. Native automatic-duplex marks include Letter, Legal and A4.
Scanning arrangement
This is a print-only model. Its color touchscreen, mobile app branding and I-Fax receiving do not establish an original scanner, copier or telephone fax.
Computer and mobile connections
USB device, Gigabit Ethernet, infrastructure Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct are documented. USB host ports serve memory media and differ from the computer cable. UFR II/PCL are standard; PS is excluded by the actual model footnote.
Supplies and declared yields
Exact model manual supplies 057 at 3,100 sheets; replacement 057 also 3,100 and 057 H 10,000. Basis is ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The high-yield cartridge is not the included one.
Software and support
Native Secure Print is actual PIN-held output. AirPrint remains a separate plan with app-dependent settings. Preserved row/support item is 3516C005, while the read brochure prints 3516C004; package code should be checked rather than silently merged.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual operating body is 17¼ by 14¾ by 12¼ inches. The stated 20.3 lb excludes toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. U.S. power is 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Operating depth is larger with trays extended.
