Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can LBP236dw print PIN-held duplex Letter monochrome jobs over supported native Wi-Fi with 350 included Letter sheets?
Yes. Its native driver and LCD Secure Print route combine eligible Letter automatic duplex with PIN release. Standard capacity is 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond, and 3,000 pages monthly is within the recommended range.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it also scan and copy originals?
No. LBP236dw is a print-only model without a glass or document feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the base model include 900 Letter sheets of supply?
No. Standard supply is 350; the 900 maximum requires the optional 550-sheet AH1 cassette.

The Canon imageCLASS LBP236dw is an earlier print-only laser model for a supported small-office document queue. Its useful combination is native automatic duplex, PIN-held printing and 350 included Letter sheets. It leaves scanning and copying to another device.
The five-line black-and-white LCD distinguishes it from the LBP237dw touchscreen model in the same manual. A shared illustration may show that other printer, but operating controls and model-specific software features should follow the LBP236dw column.
Check the actual printer-language limits
The actual guide supports UFR II, PCL5/PCL6 and Adobe PostScript 3 for LBP236dw. PostScript is explicitly limited to this member of its two-model U.S. family. This can matter when choosing the supported driver for an existing application workflow.
The same chapter gives LBP236dw 45 Roman PCL fonts and 10 Bitmap fonts. Its brochure’s shared 93-font declaration does not override that exact row. The neighboring model’s OCR and optional barcode features are also not added here.
USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support the native computer arrangement. Install the exact supported driver, select this printer in the application, open its properties, set the job and submit it. Driver help explains controls that vary by software version and system.
Native Secure Print has a temporary holding period
Select Secured Print in the driver’s Output Method before sending the document. At the machine, choose Secure Print, select the intended document and enter its PIN. If a user-selection screen appears, choose the matching user first.
The shared checkboxes and Start instructions apply to the touch-panel model. Follow the LCD prompts on LBP236dw. A configured deletion period limits how long an uncollected job stays available; it disappears after expiry.
Stored jobs use memory and can obstruct ordinary printing when too much data is left uncollected. Collect or delete them promptly. Department ID management is a separate control, rather than the PIN attached to an individual held document.
The standard paper supply is 350 Letter sheets
The cassette holds 250 sheets and the multipurpose tray 100, totaling 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond. The optional 550-sheet AH1 raises the maximum to 900. It is additional equipment, and an installed unit must be reflected in the native driver’s Device Settings.
The actual operating table permits Letter, Legal and A4 automatic duplex on eligible stock. It also separates Heavy 1 through 120 gsm, which has duplex approval, from the heavier categories that are multipurpose-only and cannot use automatic duplex.
Labels and envelopes have their own exclusions. Envelopes use the multipurpose tray rather than the cassette. Match both size and type to the actual stock; do not infer duplex eligibility simply from a supported input size or the tray’s maximum weight.
Mobile output has application-dependent controls
The AirPrint procedure permits the same LAN, a supported direct wireless connection or a USB-connected Mac. Its USB minimum is OS X 10.9. Enable IPP, add the printer where required and select it from a compatible application.
Available sizes and settings vary by that application. Native font choices, exact duplex-media settings and PIN submission are not guaranteed in every mobile dialog. Canon also lists Mopria and Canon PRINT Business.
Memory-media printing accepts supported JPEG, TIFF and PDF files. I-Fax receiving provides another output source. Neither function adds an original scanner, copier or telephone fax to a print-only machine.
Count the starter toner separately
The supplied starter is rated for 1,500 sheets, while replacement 057 is rated for 3,100 and 057 H for 10,000. The guide uses ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The 3,100-sheet cartridge supplied with the other model is not this model’s in-box quantity.
Canon declares up to 40 one-sided Letter ppm and separately 32 Legal ppm, with a recommended monthly range of 750–4,000 pages. The actual guide body is 15¾ by 14¾ by 9⅞ inches. Its 19.4 lb weight excludes toner, so loaded carrying weight remains unknown.
The U.S. support page and brochure print the shortened item string 516C005. This review retains that wording without silently converting it into another sales package. Match the actual model and package label when checking supplies or an existing installation.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 40 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 32 Legal ppm. Actual guide uses repeated continuous plain-Letter testing and permits condition-adjustment pauses; first-page time is separate.
Paper handling
350 standard Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond: 250 cassette plus 100 multipurpose. Maximum 900 needs optional AH1. Native duplex includes Letter/Legal/A4 and eligible media; Heavy 1 through 120 gsm is distinguished from heavier categories, labels and envelopes.
Scanning arrangement
Print-only hardware has no glass, feeder, original scanner, copier or telephone fax. Memory-media output and I-Fax receipt do not add original capture.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, Gigabit Ethernet, infrastructure Wi-Fi and direct wireless output are documented. Exact native languages are UFR II, PCL5/PCL6 and Adobe PostScript 3. Actual PCL quantity is 45 Roman plus 10 Bitmap; brochure 93 is not applied.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied starter is rated 1,500 sheets. Replacement 057 is 3,100 and 057 H 10,000, under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. Another model’s 3,100 supplied yield is excluded.
Software and support
Five-line LCD operation differs from LBP237dw’s touchscreen. Native Secure Print requires matching job PIN and available memory. The support/brochure item string reads 516C005; no silently corrected package identity is assigned. Recommended range is 750–4,000 monthly pages.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual closed body is 15¾ by 14¾ by 9⅞ inches, versus rounded brochure 15.8 by 14.7 by 9.8. The 19.4 lb figure excludes toner, leaving loaded weight unknown. Actual U.S. power is 110–127 V, 60 Hz; maintain specified surrounding clearance.
