Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can LBP253dw print PIN-held duplex Legal monochrome documents over supported native Ethernet?
Yes. The actual native driver provides Secure Print and eligible Legal automatic duplex. Set the paper-size lever for Letter/Legal and close the rear sub-output tray before duplex printing.
Explore this need in the finder →Can this print-only device scan and copy originals?
No. It has no original scanner, glass or document feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Does its standard configuration include at least 500 sheets of input supply?
No. The included sources total 300 generic normal-paper sheets. Reaching the larger capacity requires the optional PF-44.

The Canon imageCLASS LBP253dw is an earlier monochrome laser printer with a 3.5-inch color touchscreen. It suits a supported document workflow needing automatic two-sided output and native PIN-held printing, with scanning and copying provided elsewhere.
The screen’s color does not indicate color output. There is no original glass, document feeder, copier or telephone fax. USB memory output and mobile connection features remain ways to supply print jobs.
Separate pages per minute from physical sheets
The actual U.S. manual rates one-sided continuous Letter output at 35 pages per minute. Its duplex figure is 17 pages per minute and explicitly 8.5 physical sheets per minute. Reading that as 17 complete two-sided sheets would double the stated throughput.
Resolution, size, stock, orientation and job quantity can affect speed. The separate first-page time also does not describe sustained output. Canon’s 50,000-page maximum monthly duty is a different measure; the read sources do not establish a recommended routine monthly range.
Two-sided output needs the correct mechanical settings
The paper table permits native automatic duplex for Letter, Legal and A4, subject to eligible medium. The driver’s Basic Settings selects one-sided or two-sided printing and its binding position. Its documented default is two-sided, so check the actual choice when a job needs single-sided output.
Before duplex printing, set the internal paper-size switch lever correctly. Pull it toward you for A4; push it away for Letter or Legal. The rear sub-output tray must be closed. The guide warns that an incorrect lever position can cause misfeeds or jams, and duplex cannot operate with that tray open.
Envelopes, labels and custom sizes have different restrictions. A loadable size is not automatically duplex-approved. The actual paper table also limits envelopes to five in the multipurpose source, while the support page says ten; this review follows the operating table.
300 standard sheets, with an optional PF-44
The base drawer holds approximately 250 ordinary sheets and the multipurpose tray 50, totaling 300. These are generic media quantities; this review does not invent a separate Legal stack capacity. Heavy stock reduces the source quantities.
The optional PF-44 adds a 500-sheet drawer, raising total supply to 800. If fitted, register its 500 Sheet Drawer option in the native driver’s Device Settings. The accessory is not part of the included 300-sheet configuration.
Native USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi use the appropriate supported printer driver. UFR II, PCL and PS are documented. Driver-specific settings differ, so use the exact installation and help material for the computer system.
Secure Print waits for the matching job PIN
Enable Allow Use of Secure Print in the native driver’s Device Settings. In a document’s print properties, choose Secured Print as Output Method and provide the requested job, user and PIN information. The PIN can contain up to seven digits.
At the touch panel, choose Secure Print, select the user if prompted, select the document and enter its matching PIN. The original default deletes uncollected jobs after 30 minutes; the period can be configured using the documented settings and restart procedure.
Stored documents consume memory and can interfere with ordinary printing when left uncollected. Treat this as temporary collection storage. Department ID management is a separate usage control.
Direct wireless mode changes the available network arrangement
AirPrint supports a shared LAN, a direct connection or a USB-connected Mac, with OS X 10.9 or later documented for USB. Available sizes and controls depend on the application; native PIN submission and exact duplex settings are not guaranteed in every mobile dialog.
Direct connection temporarily excludes both wired LAN and infrastructure Wi-Fi through the router. NFC additionally needs its enabled setting, IPv4 and the Canon mobile application. A convenient touch-to-connect step does not mean all connection modes operate together.
The box supply is the standard-yield cartridge
The included toner is rated for 2,100 pages. Replacement 119 has the same rating, while 119 II is rated for 6,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The higher replacement yield is not the included quantity.
The support page gives a 15.9 by 14.9 by 12.5-inch body and 27.2 lb including the cartridge, distinct from the 25.4 lb unloaded figure. Allow further space for trays, rear access and servicing.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Actual Letter continuous plain-paper rates are 35 one-sided pages/minute and 17 duplex pages/minute, explicitly 8.5 duplex sheets/minute. Paper and job conditions can slow output. Maximum duty 50,000 is not a recommended range.
Paper handling
Standard generic 250-sheet drawer plus 50-sheet multipurpose source, excluding optional 500-sheet PF-44. Native Letter/Legal/A4 duplex needs correct size lever and closed rear sub-output. Actual envelope capacity is five, despite web ten; envelopes and custom sizes have no automatic-duplex mark.
Scanning arrangement
Print-only scope excludes original scanning, copying and telephone fax. A 3.5-inch color touchscreen does not change monochrome engine output.
Computer and mobile connections
USB device, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support native printing. Direct connection excludes wired/router LAN during its use. NFC requires its enabled setting, IPv4 and Canon mobile application; it is a connection aid rather than an original-capture feature.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied toner yield is 2,100 pages. Replacement Cartridge 119 is 2,100 and 119 II 6,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. Actual original type, paper and environment affect lifetime.
Software and support
Native Secure Print uses a job PIN up to seven digits and temporary memory retention, with a documented 30-minute default. AirPrint and Mopria are separately listed mobile options; no current Google Cloud Print service or monthly working-volume recommendation is invented.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact support body is 15.9 by 14.9 by 12.5 inches and 27.2 lb with cartridge, distinct from 25.4 lb without. U.S. 120–127 V, 60 Hz is explicitly documented. Optional PF-44 weight and extra tray space are separate.
