imageCLASS LBP312dnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A supported shared office queue needing native monochrome output and a substantial base paper reserve.

The main tradeoff

PIN-held collection requires optional SD storage; the base machine has no scanner or built-in wireless route.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can standard LBP312dn provide native monochrome Legal duplex over Ethernet for a 5,000-page recommended monthly workload?

Yes. Exact paper symbols confirm eligible Legal duplex, and Canon recommends up to 7,500 monthly pages. Use the supported native queue. Standard input is 650 sheets on the stated weight basis.

Does standard LBP312dn include PIN-held job collection?

No. The actual operating chapter explicitly requires an optional SD card before Secure Print can be used. The base configuration is not treated as including that storage.

Can it scan paper originals to the office computer?

No. This exact model is print-only, without a glass or document feeder.

A print-only workgroup model with substantial base input

The Canon imageCLASS LBP312dn is an earlier monochrome laser for an established office that needs a shared native output queue and a useful paper reserve. Its base configuration combines a 550-sheet drawer with a one-hundred-sheet multipurpose source under the documented normal-paper conditions.

The deciding limit is optional storage. The actual Secure Print chapter requires an optional SD card before PIN-held collection can be used. Standard memory and a network connection do not make that feature part of the base configuration.

Build the native queue around the actual driver

The operating guide supports UFR II and Generic Plus PCL6, with settings that vary by driver and operating system. Install the exact supported package, then register actual attached options in Device Settings. A newly fitted feeder or SD card also needs the appropriate driver configuration.

Before printing, set the loaded paper size and type at the machine. In the application select the printer and open Preferences or Properties. Page Size describes the source document, while Output Size can scale it to a different physical sheet.

Choose the intended paper source and type. Paper Source Information can show the machine’s registered source sizes and whether paper is loaded. A Printer Default type selection uses the machine’s configured default, so it should not be treated as an automatic inspection of the stock.

Legal duplex is supported on eligible media

The actual paper table positively marks Letter, Legal and A4 for automatic two-sided output. It also specifies the stock conditions: eligible plain paper and the documented heavy or bond categories through 120 gsm can use that route.

The multipurpose source accepts additional specialty media that are not automatic-duplex stock. Envelopes and labels belong to their own bypass routines. A broad maximum input weight therefore does not mean that every accepted sheet can return through the duplex path.

The base capacity uses the stated 80 gsm paper basis. The operating guide separately gives a larger drawer quantity for lighter stock; it is not silently substituted for the normal figure. Exact quantities for every paper size are not established by the general capacity headline.

PIN-held collection needs the optional SD card

With the required optional storage installed, the documented native procedure sends a job through Secured Print in Output Method. The job is held on the SD card until the operator selects it and enters the correct PIN at the machine.

The chapter states a default one-hour collection interval, with an administrative setting to change it. Uncollected work expires. Additional stored-job and related functions also appear in the SD card’s option list, so their presence in a manual does not establish that the option is fitted.

A requirement for included confidential collection therefore fails this base configuration. An office evaluating an existing unit should verify the actual card and software arrangement before relying on that workflow.

Wired networking can still serve mobile output

The exact U.S. specification lists AirPrint and Mopria alongside USB and Gigabit Ethernet. A compatible mobile device can use the appropriate shared network to reach a wired printer; this does not establish a built-in wireless radio.

Available mobile settings depend on the device and application. They are kept separate from native exact media controls and optional PIN storage. Likewise, a front USB-memory output function does not give this print-only machine a scanner or analog fax.

Separate sustained workload, toner and physical fit

Canon rates one-sided plain Letter printing at forty-five pages per minute and recommends 1,500–7,500 pages per month. The one-hundred-fifty-thousand-page maximum duty is a different measure. The separately stated duplex rate is not converted here into a new physical-sheet claim.

The supplied toner is rated for seven thousand pages. Cartridge 041 replacements are rated for ten thousand, or twenty thousand in the high-capacity version, under ISO/IEC 19752 using A4 and default density. The replacement figure is not an original-box yield promise.

The exact U.S. body measures 16.1 by 14.8 by 10.9 inches and weighs 27.5 pounds including toner. Optional paper sources add height and mass, while opened trays and servicing need additional clearance. Verify supported software and the actual installed options before assigning this earlier printer to a new office routine.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

45 one-sided Letter ppm; the U.S. headline separately states 36 duplex ppm and the operating guide 36.4 pages/minute. No physical-sheet conversion is made from the ambiguous duplex footnote. Recommended 1500–7500 pages differs from 150000 maximum duty.

Paper handling

Included 550 + 100 sheets at 80 gsm; the guide separately lists 640 drawer sheets at 64 gsm. Exact-size quantity is unknown. Optional PF-C1 excluded. Letter/Legal/A4 duplex has its documented media restrictions.

Computer and mobile connections

USB and Gigabit Ethernet native output. AirPrint/Mopria can use an appropriate shared network; no built-in Wi-Fi route is established.

Supplies and declared yields

Supplied toner: approximately 7,000 pages. Replacement Cartridge 041: 10,000; 041 H: 20,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 using A4 and default density. Conditions affect actual replacement timing.

Software and support

Standard RAM does not establish PIN-held output. The actual Secure Print chapter explicitly requires optional SD CARD-C1; stored jobs, SMB print and other storage functions also depend on that option.

Electrical edition and setup

U.S. body: 16.1 × 14.8 × 10.9 inches; 27.5 lb including toner. The guide’s 25.4 lb excludes toner. U.S. power: 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Allow open-tray and service access.
