Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can it print Letter duplex pages over Wi-Fi and scan Legal feeder originals in color?
Yes, with the installed native drivers and registered IPv4 network-scanning setup. Letter paper can remain in the normal 250-sheet drawer while Legal originals use the simplex feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically capture both sides of a document stack?
No. MF227dw has a simplex feeder and Canon explicitly lists duplex scanning as unavailable. Automatic print duplex does not change that input route.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the maximum duty cycle establish a recommended 1,500-page monthly workload?
No. The exact support page lists a 10,000-page maximum duty cycle, but the reviewed original sections do not establish a recommended monthly volume.

The Canon imageCLASS MF227dw is an earlier monochrome multifunction reference for an office that wants automatic two-sided printing, color computer scanning, copying and telephone fax in one machine. USB, Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi give it several practical desktop arrangements. Its deciding compromise is the original feeder: it reads one side at a time. Automatic duplex printing does not turn it into a duplex document scanner.
Canon's exact support specifications make that distinction explicit, listing duplex scan and duplex fax input as unavailable. The normal 35-sheet feeder can still save repeated trips to the glass for loose one-sided documents. If the recurring task is to archive both sides of every form automatically, choose a model whose own feeder is positively documented for that job.
Set up the scanner on the chosen connection
The actual U.S. e-Manual documents computer scanning over USB and the wired or wireless LAN. Install the correct MF drivers and MF Toolbox. For a LAN connection, register the printer in MF Network Scan Utility and use IPv4; the guide says the scan function is unavailable in an IPv6 environment. A working network print queue therefore needs a separate scanning check before the office relies on it for electronic files.
The panel's Computer destination can save a color or black-and-white scan to the selected computer. MF Toolbox supplies the related storage and format settings, and a compatible application can also start computer scanning. Canon warns that the panel routine cannot proceed while the Toolbox setup screen is displayed. Closing that screen is a small but useful troubleshooting step when the printer is connected and the scan button seems not to complete its task.
Use the glass for originals that fit its 8.5 by 11.75 inch area, including Letter or A4 placement. The feeder extends to Legal. A full Legal original therefore belongs in the feeder rather than on the glass, even though both routes are called scanning. The 35-sheet feeder capacity is stated for Letter at the specified paper weight; it should not become a blanket capacity claim for every supported original size.
Print duplex without confusing the paper sources
The native driver has an explicit one-sided/two-sided selection and binding-edge control. The exact paper table marks Letter, Legal and A4 as automatic-duplex sizes for MF227dw. That is stronger evidence than merely knowing the cassette accepts Legal. Other media have different restrictions, so change both the paper size and type when switching away from the normal office stack.
The cassette holds 250 sheets of ordinary 60–80 gsm stock. Above that weight, the allowed stack can fall to 170 or 100 sheets depending on the paper. The additional manual feed takes one sheet, which is useful for occasional special media rather than a second normal supply. Appropriate envelopes can use their documented routine, but Monarch is restricted to the manual slot. Envelope handling does not imply automatic printing on both sides of an envelope.
The one-sided plain-paper Letter print rating is up to 28 ppm, with a separately advertised two-sided Letter figure. Neither is a measurement of a particular job. Canon lists a 10,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle, but the reviewed exact operating and support sections do not establish a recommended monthly range. A sustained-volume requirement cannot be filled by relabeling that maximum as a recommendation.
Mobile convenience and the original supply
AirPrint and Mopria give compatible mobile devices another printing route through the shared network. The printer can reach that network by Ethernet or infrastructure Wi-Fi. Application-specific media choices remain separate from the native driver's full settings, and a mobile-print feature should not be combined with an unverified scan workflow. Telephone fax also uses its own configured line rather than becoming a function of the Ethernet cable.
The supplied toner is rated at approximately 1,700 pages. Replacement Cartridge 137 is rated at about 2,400 pages. The actual original specifies ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density as the basis, keeping starter and replacement expectations distinct. The U.S. edition uses 110–127 V at 50/60 Hz and weighs about 28.2 lb with toner. Allow access to the feeder, scanner lid and paper drawer beyond the closed footprint. The MF227dw fits a mixed office routine with duplex output and one-sided input; a verified duplex-feeder multifunction model is the sensible alternative when original handling dominates.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 28 one-sided plain-paper Letter ppm. The separate 16 ppm two-sided Letter figure is not converted to sheets per minute.
Paper handling
250-sheet normal cassette at 60–80 gsm and one-sheet manual feed. Actual U.S. guide confirms automatic Letter, Legal and A4 duplex. Envelopes are one-sided media; Monarch uses the manual slot only.
Scanning arrangement
Color computer scanning over USB or registered IPv4 LAN. Glass accepts up to 8.5 by 11.75 inches, while the 35-sheet Letter simplex feeder accepts up to Legal. Automatic duplex scanning and duplex fax input are explicitly absent.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard USB, 10/100 Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi. Wired and wireless LAN are alternative network arrangements; no direct wireless mode is established for this exact edition.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied toner approximately 1,700 pages; replacement Canon Cartridge 137 approximately 2,400 pages. Actual original uses ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual U.S. e-Manual: 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz and 28.2 lb including toner. The exact MF227dw body dimensions are distinct from carton dimensions and from the larger MF229dw.
