Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired office print monochrome documents and scan Legal sheets in color while keeping 250 Letter sheets loaded?
Yes, with the native drivers and registered IPv4 scanner setup. The Legal originals go through the simplex feeder; Letter paper in the drawer supplies the print job. Canon recommends 500–2,000 pages per month.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I make automatic two-sided printouts without reloading the sheets?
No. The exact MF236n model has no automatic print duplex. The duplex features in the shared guide are explicitly restricted to MF249dw and MF247dw.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I scan a full Legal original on the glass?
No. Legal fits the feeder, but the actual original guide gives the glass an 8.5 by 11.75 inch maximum.
Explore this need in the finder →A wired office scanner with a clear duplex limit
The Canon imageCLASS MF236n is an earlier monochrome multifunction reference for an office that wants computer scanning, copying and telephone fax with USB or a wired network connection. Its strongest practical fit is a shared Ethernet desk where loose originals can go through the feeder and smaller or bound material can use the glass. The main compromise is automatic paper handling: this exact model has neither automatic two-sided printing nor automatic two-sided feeder scanning.
That distinction is easy to miss in a shared manual. The MF249dw and MF247dw appear alongside the MF236n, but their duplex printing and wireless instructions are explicitly limited to those named models. The MF236n has a 24-page-per-minute one-sided plain-paper Letter rating, rather than their 28 ppm figure. Canon recommends 500–2,000 printed pages per month and lists a separate 15,000-page maximum duty cycle. A maximum does not raise the recommended working range.
Install scanning as well as printing
Canon documents real computer scanning over both USB and the wired network. Install the correct MF drivers and MF Scan Utility, then register a network-connected machine in MF Network Scanner Selector. The guide requires IPv4 for that scanning arrangement; an IPv6-only connection is not a substitute. USB avoids the network-registration step. These are useful setup details because a working printer queue alone does not confirm that the computer can receive scans.
The normal desktop routine can start from the machine's Computer scan destination or from MF Scan Utility. A compatible application can also select ScanGear MF or WIA. Color and black-and-white settings are separate from the monochrome print engine, so a color document can be captured even though the device prints only black toner. Direct e-mail or shared-folder sending in the shared guide belongs to other specified models; do not plan an unattended MF236n folder workflow around those pages.
The guide also positively documents AirPrint printing and scanning on a Mac connected by USB or to the same LAN. That is a specific supported arrangement, with OS X 10.9 or later required for USB and AirPrint scanning. The relevant IPP and Network Link Scan settings must be enabled, and the scanner must be online. Available paper settings depend on the application. For ordinary mobile printing, the phone or tablet can share the network through the router while the printer itself stays wired. This does not give the MF236n a Wi-Fi radio or a direct wireless mode.
Use the feeder for Legal originals
The document feeder accepts originals up to Legal, with a stated 35-sheet capacity for Letter at 80 gsm. It reads one side at a time. Turning a two-sided stack over remains a manual task, so a recurring duplex-document archive is a reason to choose a model with a documented automatic two-sided feeder instead.
The glass is a different route. The actual User Guide gives it an 8.5 by 11.75 inch maximum, supporting Letter or A4 placement but not a full Legal page. A combined support-page scan-size row says platen/feeder up to Legal; the route-specific original guide resolves that overgeneralization. Put a Legal sheet through the feeder, and reserve the glass for originals that fit its physical area. This matters more than an undifferentiated maximum scan-size headline.
Paper, toner and the useful alternative
The normal drawer holds 250 sheets at 60–80 gsm, with a separate one-sheet manual feed for occasional media. The advertised combined figure should not be mistaken for another full tray. Heavier stock reduces the drawer capacity, and an envelope routine replaces the ordinary stack or uses the manual slot. Monarch envelopes specifically require the slot. Match the selected paper size and type in the machine and printer driver before expecting the next user to print successfully.
The original supply is Cartridge 137 Starter, rated at approximately 1,700 pages. The replacement Cartridge 137 is rated at about 2,400 pages. Canon states ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at the default density in the actual guide; neither number is a measured ownership result or a current cost calculation. The U.S. edition uses 110–127 V at 50/60 Hz and weighs about 26.7 lb with toner. Allow clearance for the feeder and covers beyond the closed body. Choose the MF236n for its wired all-function routine; choose a specifically verified duplex model when reducing manual page turning is the deciding need.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 24 one-sided plain-paper Letter pages per minute, separately from the 28 ppm rating of MF249dw/MF247dw.
Paper handling
250-sheet normal cassette at 60–80 gsm plus one-sheet manual feed; heavier paper lowers stack capacity. Automatic print duplex is absent on MF236n. Letter, Legal and A4 are supported; Monarch envelopes go in the manual slot.
Scanning arrangement
Color computer scanning over USB or registered IPv4 Ethernet. The original User Guide limits glass to 8.5 by 11.75 inches; the Legal claim in the support-page combined platen/feeder row is not applied to the glass. 35-sheet Letter ADF, simplex only.
Computer and mobile connections
USB and standard 10/100 Ethernet. Wi-Fi and direct wireless in the shared guide belong to MF249dw/MF247dw; the companion brochure MF232w also has a different radio configuration.
Supplies and declared yields
Included Cartridge 137 Starter: approximately 1,700 pages. Replacement Cartridge 137: approximately 2,400 pages. Actual guide uses ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual U.S. guide specifies 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz and 26.7 lb including toner. Body dimensions use its exact MF236n column; leave operating and feeder clearance.
