Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a compatible Ethernet desk combine mono Legal duplex output, individual color Letter scanning and 250 included Legal sheets?
Yes, using the native driver and registered IPv4 scanner. The original confirms Legal output duplex and a separate Letter/A4 glass; there is no feeder.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically feed a stack of originals like MF244dw?
No. The exact model parts and document tables assign the feeder only to MF244dw.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the glass capture a full Legal original?
No. Its documented maximum length is 11.75 inches, shorter than fourteen-inch Legal.

The Canon imageCLASS MF242dw is an earlier monochrome laser print/copy/scan reference for a compatible desktop or small network. Its useful combination is automatic Letter, Legal and A4 output duplex with individual color scanning from the glass. The deciding limit is original handling: this exact model has no automatic document feeder or telephone fax.
Canon’s 2021 launch announcement and the exact US operating guide agree on the model and its twenty-eight-ppm Letter platform. The current support page’s generic detail table instead shows a forty-ppm fax machine with a larger tray and touchscreen. Those conflicting rows are excluded rather than used to enlarge the real MF242dw.
The flatbed is for one original at a time
The actual parts diagram shows a platen cover on MF242dw and reserves the feeder for MF244dw. The scanner specification gives the glass a maximum of 8.5 by 11.75 inches, supporting Letter and A4. Legal paper can print, but a fourteen-inch Legal original does not fit that capture surface.
The scanner is genuinely color-capable even though the laser engine prints monochrome. Optical 600-by-600-dpi glass capture is separate from software-interpolated 9,600 dpi. Repeated individual originals can be combined through the documented software workflow; that is a user-managed sequence, not an automatic feeder.
From the panel, select the computer destination and scan type. The original distinguishes color JPEG presets from a black-and-white searchable-PDF preset and allows settings to be changed in MF Scan Utility. OCR and file choices depend on working software rather than a guarantee that every original becomes perfect editable text.
Native network scanning needs its own preparation
The actual interface table includes USB, 10/100 Ethernet and ordinary 802.11b/g/n wireless. For a Windows LAN arrangement, install the correct software and register the machine in MF Network Scanner Selector. The exact preparation chapter excludes scanning through IPv6 and specifies IPv4 or USB instead.
The USB route does not need that network registration. Native computer capture can use MF Scan Utility, ScanGear MF or a compatible application with the correct scanner selected. A print queue working on the network does not by itself complete the scanner installation.
The original and launch announcement also document AirPrint, Mopria and a router-free direct connection for compatible mobile devices. Those are separate arrangements with their own settings. For the stated Mac versions, this exact guide also positively permits AirPrint printing and scanning over USB or the same LAN. Enable the network-link scan setting, put Remote Scanner online and avoid another machine operation while capturing. That documented Mac arrangement has its own plan, with exact AirPrint output paper and duplex subsets left unassigned. A system-manager PIN or WPS setup PIN is not proof of protected document release, which remains unestablished.
Two-sided output uses the actual driver control
The original MF242dw print chapter explicitly offers one- or two-sided printing, with two-sided as its default. Select the binding location for the way the finished document will open. The paper chapter separately marks Letter, Legal and A4 as suitable for automatic duplex on this exact model.
The ordinary drawer holds 250 sheets of sixty- to eighty-gram plain stock. The manual feed is one sheet, useful for a temporary change of media rather than another full paper supply. Heavier paper has lower declared capacities and separate duplex conditions. Appropriate envelopes have their own source restrictions; Monarch is manual-slot-only.
The actual Letter printing declaration is twenty-eight one-sided pages per minute. Copy speed and glass scan times have different conditions and do not become print rates. No numeric recommended monthly volume or maximum duty is established by the examined original sections, so neither is inferred from its speed.
Starter toner is different from the replacement cartridge
The launch announcement confirms an included Genuine Cartridge 137 rated at up to 1,700 pages. The original supplies chapter independently states 1,700 sheets supplied and 2,400 for the replacement Cartridge 137, with its ISO/IEC 19752 A4/default-density basis. A replacement number should not silently replace the inbox declaration.
The exact original gives the MF242dw body as 15⅜ inches wide, 14⅝ deep and 12¼ high, with 25.1 pounds including toner. The taller MF244dw dimensions belong to its feeder configuration. The US guide specifies 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz and calls for unobstructed ventilation and working access.
Check a usable driver and the actual unit’s condition before relying on an older installation. An MFP with a documented feeder is the practical alternative for repeated stacks, while a full Legal glass is needed for bound Legal originals. Neither requirement is supplied by ordinary Legal output duplex.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Actual original 28 one-sided Letter ppm; separate copy and glass-scan conditions. No numerical recommended monthly volume or maximum duty established by the examined exact sources.
Paper handling
250 ordinary drawer sheets at 60–80 g/m², plus separate one-sheet manual feed. Exact paper chapter supports Letter/Legal/A4 automatic duplex; heavier media has reduced capacity and different duplex approval. Envelopes up to twenty in drawer under conditions, Monarch manual-slot-only.
Scanning arrangement
Exact MF242dw has glass only; feeder belongs to MF244dw. Glass maximum 8.5 × 11.75 inches supports Letter/A4, not Legal. Color optical 600 × 600 dpi differs from 9,600 interpolated. Native USB/registered IPv4 network capture is positive; no automatic original-side capture.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n infrastructure wireless in original table, with separately documented direct connection and AirPrint/Mopria. Windows LAN scanner registration and IPv4 required. No fax or confirmed native PIN collection; generic current 40-ppm/fax/1-GB/350-sheet touchscreen table is excluded. The exact original separately permits Mac AirPrint printing and scanning over USB or same LAN, with its stated OS/online settings; that positive exception has its own operating plan.
Supplies and declared yields
Genuine Cartridge 137: included 1,700 sheets, replacement 2,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 A4/default-density declaration. Exact dated launch independently confirms 1,700 included pages. No current cost or remaining supply life assumed.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual MF242dw body 15⅜ W × 14⅝ D × 12¼ H inches, approximately 25.1 lb including toner; taller MF244dw feeder body excluded. US original 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz. Leave glass lid, paper drawer, rear, cables and ventilation access.
