Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF244dw scan single-sided Legal color originals and print eligible duplex Legal monochrome pages over a supported native USB connection?
Yes. Legal originals use the 35-sheet simplex feeder, and native Legal automatic print duplex is documented. Install the exact supported scanner software and choose the actual computer capture route; color capture does not mean color printing.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it automatically scan both faces of a stack?
No. Exact MF244dw specifications say Duplex Scan: No. Automatic output duplex does not add two-sided original intake.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it scan a complete Legal page on the glass?
No. The actual operating guide limits the glass to 8.5 by 11¾ inches. Legal originals require the feeder, despite the generic support-page scan-size wording.
Explore this need in the finder →Monochrome output with a useful one-sided feeder
The Canon imageCLASS MF244dw adds a 35-sheet document feeder to a monochrome print, copy and color-scan workflow. It fits an office handling one-sided forms, letters and occasional Legal originals, with automatic two-sided printing for eligible output stock.
The distinction between output and input is central. This model can automatically print both sides of a sheet, but its feeder cannot automatically scan both original faces. It is also a three-function machine; a generic fax-driver entry on the support page does not add telephone fax hardware.
The operating guide resolves the Legal glass ambiguity
The support table’s general scan-size line describes both platen and feeder as reaching Legal. The actual document and scanner specifications are more precise: the glass reaches 8.5 by 11¾ inches, while the MF244dw feeder reaches 8.5 by 14 inches. Letter and A4 can use the glass; a complete Legal original needs the feeder.
The feeder quantity is 35 Letter originals at 80 gsm. Use the glass for suitable bound or fragile originals instead of forcing them through the intake. A two-sided original requires separate attention to its reverse face and file order.
The optical specifications also differ by route: the guide gives 600 by 600 dpi for the glass and 300 by 300 for the feeder. Its much larger software-interpolated figure is not the scanner’s optical resolution.
Register the actual computer scanning destination
USB, Fast Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support native computer operation. Install the exact supported printer and scanner software. For Windows LAN capture, register the machine in MF Network Scanner Selector. That route uses IPv4; the preparation chapter excludes an IPv6-only scanning environment. USB avoids this network registration step.
At the machine, press Copy/Scan, choose Computer, select the destination and an appropriate scan type, then start. MF Scan Utility controls those presets and the saved-folder location. Close an open ScanGear MF screen before using the panel capture command.
The Scan-to-PC shortcut can store the connection type, destination computer and scan type for a repeated routine. A feeder job finishes by displaying the saved location on the computer; a PDF sequence from the glass uses additional pages followed by Finish Scanning. These are computer-assisted workflows, rather than an assumed standalone server sender.
A compatible TWAIN or WIA application can also invoke the scanner. If automatic online mode is disabled, first place the machine into Remote Scanner mode. The guide warns that some applications may need originals scanned individually even when a feeder is present.
Duplex output needs the right paper settings
Use the native driver’s Basic Settings to choose one-sided or two-sided output and the intended binding edge. The operating paper list confirms Letter, Legal and A4 automatic duplex on eligible media. Loading a size successfully is not permission to duplex every stock type of that size.
The drawer’s generic quantity is 250 sheets at 60–80 gsm. It drops to 170 for 81–89 gsm paper, with further limits for heavier categories. A separate one-sheet manual slot handles an occasional alternate sheet. This review does not turn that generic drawer headline into an unverified Legal stack quantity.
The exact native language list includes UFR II LT and PCL 5e/6. Select the intended supported driver and match its size and type to the machine’s registered paper. Envelopes have their own loading rules and should be assessed separately from ordinary automatic duplex work.
Mobile printing is a separate convenience
Canon lists AirPrint, Mopria and Canon PRINT Business, and the guide documents a direct access-point arrangement as well as a router-based LAN. These options can simplify supported mobile output, but their applications do not necessarily expose every native paper or scanning control.
A direct wireless service name also does not prove network computer scanning without its preparation. Choose the connection and software around the actual workflow rather than treating every wireless feature as interchangeable.
Use the recommended volume and starter yield correctly
Canon declares up to 28 one-sided plain Letter ppm, with a separate 16-page duplex rate. That duplex figure is not 16 two-sided physical sheets per minute. The recommended monthly range is 750–3,000 pages; the 15,000 maximum duty figure is a different limit.
The supplied cartridge is rated for 1,700 pages, compared with 2,400 for replacement Cartridge 137 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The actual closed body is 15⅜ by 14⅝ by 14¼ inches and 28 lb including toner. Allow extra clearance for the feeder, extended paper drawer and servicing.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 28 one-sided continuous plain Letter ppm. Separate 16 duplex Letter ppm refers to printed images/pages, not 16 two-sided physical sheets. Scanner timing is a separate glass-only measurement.
Paper handling
Generic drawer quantity is 250 sheets at 60–80 gsm, 170 at 81–89 gsm and lower for heavier stock, plus one-sheet manual feed. Letter/Legal/A4 output duplex uses eligible paper categories. No exact-size input quantity is inferred.
Scanning arrangement
35 Letter originals at 80 gsm; simplex feeder reaches Legal. Actual glass maximum is 8.5 by 11¾ inches, covering Letter/A4, despite generic support scan-size wording. Feeder optical scan resolution is 300 by 300 dpi versus glass 600 by 600.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, Fast Ethernet, infrastructure Wi-Fi and direct wireless are documented. Exact native languages list UFR II LT and PCL 5e/6. Network computer scanning requires its own registration and IPv4.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied toner is rated for 1,700 pages; replacement Cartridge 137 for 2,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default print density. Actual originals, environment and coverage affect replacement timing.
Software and support
Print, copy and color scan are the exact model functions. A generic bundled fax-driver line does not establish fax hardware. Native PIN release is unestablished. Recommended 750–3,000 pages differs from 15,000 maximum duty.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual body is 15⅜ by 14⅝ by 14¼ inches and 28 lb including toner. U.S. 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz is documented. Leave additional room for the extended drawer, open feeder and ventilation.
