Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF247dw print monochrome Legal documents on both sides and scan a one-sided Legal stack in color over USB?
Yes. Native Legal duplex and simplex Legal feeder capture are documented. Install the exact supported printer/scanner software. Color capture does not change monochrome output.
Explore this need in the finder →Can that feeder automatically capture both original faces?
No. MF247dw explicitly has no duplex scanning and uses a simplex feeder. MF249’s two-sided original function is not inherited.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a fragile Legal original lie flat on its glass?
No. The glass is Letter/A4 class. Legal capture uses the feeder, which may be unsuitable for a fragile or bound original.
Explore this need in the finder →Monochrome duplex output with straightforward original capture
The Canon imageCLASS MF247dw is an earlier monochrome laser multifunction printer with analog fax, automatic print duplex and a thirty-five-sheet simplex feeder. It suits an established supported office whose outgoing documents benefit from two-sided printing but whose incoming stacks are mainly one-sided.
The distinction matters in everyday use. Printing a second side automatically does not give the feeder automatic both-face capture. The exact MF247 specification explicitly excludes duplex scanning, and the shared MF249 guide should not be read as assigning that model’s feeder hardware to this one.
Set up computer capture in addition to printing
The actual guide supports UFR II LT and PCL6 native printer drivers for MF247dw, with controls that can vary by driver. Install the appropriate software, register the loaded size and type and check the application’s print preferences before sending a job.
Scanner preparation is another step. For Windows on a wired or wireless LAN, register the machine in MF Network Scanner Selector and use IPv4. The guide excludes an IPv6-only scanner arrangement. A USB connection does not require that LAN registration.
At the panel choose Scan, Computer, the destination computer and the desired preset, then start capture. MF Scan Utility changes the available preset behavior. Close the ScanGear screen first, because it can prevent the panel operation from starting.
Make repeated scanning simpler with an explicit shortcut
Scan-to-PC1 and Scan-to-PC2 can retain the desired computer and capture type. Register the connection, destination and preset deliberately before treating either button as a reliable repeated workflow. A shortcut left over from another computer is not a generic “send anywhere” action.
The actual default presets distinguish color JPEG from searchable monochrome PDF. Choose the format appropriate to the intended file rather than assuming every color selection produces a multipage PDF. For a PDF glass sequence, place each next original and use Finish Scan when complete.
Direct shared-folder sending is separately documented. Its actual declared size list is Letter, Legal and Statement, so that route is not used to promise every size available in the computer utility. Folder credentials and registration also remain separate from a printer queue.
Use the feeder and glass within their own limits
The feeder accepts Legal originals, while the glass is in the Letter/A4 class. A fragile or bound Legal document therefore does not become suitable simply because the machine has a Legal feeder specification.
The thirty-five-sheet quantity is specifically a Letter figure at the stated 80 gsm basis. Keep originals aligned and within the limit; the larger MF249 feeder quantity is not substituted. Its two-sided-original weight footnote also belongs only to MF249.
Optical capture specifications differ by route: the actual appendix gives 600 by 600 dpi for the glass and 300 by 300 dpi for the feeder. The larger interpolated number is a software result and should not be described as the physical scanner resolution.
Paper quantity depends on stock, not just the cassette label
The normal included input is a 250-sheet drawer plus a one-sheet manual slot under the guide’s light plain-paper conditions. The quantity falls for heavier stock. A one-sheet slot is useful for occasional alternate media but is not a fifty-sheet multipurpose tray.
Letter, Legal and A4 are positively listed for automatic print duplex with eligible media. Heavy and bond categories have their own weight limits, while Monarch envelopes and three-by-five-inch stock require the manual slot. The general input quantity is not assigned to every exact size.
Read workload, toner and dimensions on their stated basis
Canon separates twenty-eight one-sided plain Letter pages per minute from sixteen duplex pages per minute. Its recommended monthly range is 750–3,000 pages; the fifteen-thousand-page maximum duty is not a recommended sustained target.
The supplied toner is rated for 1,700 pages, while replacement Cartridge 137 is rated for 2,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 using A4 and default density. Content and conditions affect actual consumption, so the replacement figure is not an original-box promise.
The exact operating guide gives a loaded body of 28.2 pounds and 15⅜ by 14⅝ by 14¼ inches. Allow opening and service space, provide the specified U.S. supply and confirm exact software support. A routine needing automatic both-face capture should choose a model with that operation positively documented.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
28 one-sided plain Letter pages per minute; 16 duplex Letter pages per minute is separate. Recommended monthly volume: 750–3,000, versus 15,000 maximum duty. Glass capture time is not print speed.
Paper handling
Included generic input: 250 sheets at 60–80 gsm plus one manual sheet; 81–89 gsm reduces drawer quantity to 170. Exact-size quantity is unknown. Letter/Legal/A4 duplex supports the documented eligible heavy/bond stock through 120 gsm. Monarch and 3 × 5-inch stock use manual feed.
Scanning arrangement
Exact MF247 has a 35-sheet Letter simplex feeder at 80 gsm, with Legal supported. Glass is Letter/A4. No automatic two-sided original capture. Glass optical resolution is 600 × 600 dpi and feeder 300 × 300, separate from interpolation.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, Fast Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support native print/capture. Windows LAN capture needs IPv4 registration. The SMB folder’s Letter/Legal/Statement scope remains separate from broader desktop utility capture. Analog fax needs its own telephone arrangement.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied toner: approximately 1,700 pages. Replacement Cartridge 137: 2,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 using A4 and default density. Replacement yield is not assigned to the starter.
Software and support
Panel Computer presets and Scan-to-PC1/PC2 require their actual setup. A glass PDF sequence ends with Finish Scan. Close ScanGear before panel capture. Network security or Address Book PIN does not establish PIN-held print release.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual MF247 body: 15⅜ × 14⅝ × 14¼ inches; 28.2 lb including toner. U.S. power: 110–127 V, 50/60 Hz. Actual measurements control conflicting rounded web figures. Allow tray and service access.
