Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF416dw capture both sides of Legal forms into a LAN computer folder and print PIN-held monochrome Legal jobs over Ethernet?
Yes, with the configured direct SMB File workflow and supported native printer driver. Choose the proper two-sided original orientation for capture and release native secured jobs with the matching PIN. This does not establish single-pass scanning.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it be selected specifically for single-pass duplex original capture?
No. Automatic two-sided feeder operation is documented, but the read operating source does not establish a single-pass mechanism.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the MF416dw glass scan a full Legal page?
No. Its glass is limited to Letter/A4 coverage; Legal originals use the document feeder. The larger MF419dw glass is a different model specification.
Explore this need in the finder →A multifunction reference for a configured wired or wireless office
The Canon imageCLASS MF416dw is an earlier U.S. monochrome multifunction model with printing, copying, color scanning and telephone fax. Its exact support record is retired. The original workflow remains useful when assessing an existing installation with suitable native drivers and a deliberately configured network.
USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are documented. Canon also lists direct wireless mobile connection and NFC application pairing, but those features should not replace the installation steps required for native printing, computer capture or a shared-folder destination.
Automatic feeder duplex does not establish single-pass capture
The 50-sheet feeder accepts originals up to Legal and can automatically capture both faces. In the machine-based File workflow, choose Two-Sided Original and then Book Type or Calendar Type according to the orientation of the faces. This matters when the reverse side would otherwise arrive upside down.
The read operating chapter does not name the mechanism as single-pass or reversing. This review therefore preserves genuine automatic duplex support while leaving the mechanism unestablished. A requirement specifically for single-pass intake needs a different positive source.
The glass is smaller: MF416dw is limited to 8.5 by 11¾ inches, covering Letter and A4. The neighboring MF419dw has a larger Legal glass, but its column does not apply here. Use the feeder for a full Legal original and the glass for appropriate books, cards or other non-feeding material.
Computer saving and direct folder sending have different setup steps
For the native computer workflow, install the proper scanner software and register the machine in MF Network Scanner Selector when using wired or wireless LAN. Canon says this native scanning arrangement requires IPv4 or USB rather than IPv6. From the panel, choose Scan, Computer, the destination and a scan type.
MF Scan Utility can change the default formats and save location. Close ScanGear MF if its open screen blocks a panel-started job. A feeder batch saves when completed; glass jobs may require additional pages followed by Finish.
Direct SMB folder capture is a separate documented route. Configure and register the computer share and any required credentials first, choose Scan and File, select that address-book destination and set scan size, color and two-sided original orientation. The operating guide positively connects automatic two-sided capture to this File workflow, so it is the explicit network duplex arrangement used in this review.
PIN-held printing belongs to the native driver
Secure Print is a genuine held-job function here. Enable its permission in the native driver's Device Settings, select Secured Print as the output method and supply a user name and PIN. The PIN may contain up to seven digits.
At the machine, open Secure Print, select the relevant job and enter the same PIN. The default validity is 30 minutes, after which an unprinted secured document is erased; administrators can change that period. Waiting jobs consume memory and can affect ordinary printing, so release them promptly.
The manual also warns that a displayed Remote Scanner screen must be closed before proceeding to Secure Print. These are useful operating details beyond a generic security checkbox. AirPrint printing is documented separately, and this review does not attach native driver PIN controls to every Apple mobile job.
Duplex output needs the correct paper path and lever position
Automatic two-sided output supports Letter, Legal and A4 on eligible media. Set the internal size-switch lever toward you for A4 and away from you for Letter or Legal. Keep the rear sub-output tray closed; it cannot remain open during automatic duplex.
The driver defaults to two-sided printing. Check page size, actual output size, paper source and binding location when the intended job differs. The 35 one-sided Letter ppm claim is distinct from 17 two-sided pages per minute, which the operating specification also describes as 8.5 physical sheets per minute.
Standard normal-paper intake is 250 cassette sheets plus 50 in the multipurpose tray. Reaching 800 requires the optional 500-sheet PF-44, which is excluded here. Heavy stock reduces capacity, and envelopes have their own five-piece multipurpose limit.
Use the U.S. supply and loaded-body references
The supplied Cartridge 119 is rated at 2,100 sheets; replacement 119 II at 6,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The actual U.S. operating body is 15⅜ inches wide, 18⅝ deep and 17 high, weighing about 42.3 lb including toner. Allow room for loading, feeder opening and service.
The 50,000-page maximum monthly duty is not a recommended routine volume. Assess MF416dw around its supported native driver and configured capture route, with the glass, feeder and optional paper supply kept separate.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The exact operating printer specification distinguishes 35 one-sided Letter ppm from 17 two-sided pages per minute, or 8.5 physical sheets per minute. Scanner speed is a separate glass measurement at 300 dpi.
Paper handling
Standard normal intake is 250 cassette sheets plus 50 multipurpose sheets. The 500-sheet PF-44 is optional. Exact-size input capacity is not inferred from generic normal-paper quantities. Envelope capacity is five in the multipurpose tray.
Scanning arrangement
MF416dw glass covers Letter/A4, while its feeder reaches Legal and supports automatic two-sided originals. The verified File workflow uses Book Type or Calendar Type. Single-pass versus reversing mechanics remains unestablished.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support the documented native arrangement; direct mobile connection and NFC application pairing are separate features. Native scanner preparation requires IPv4 or USB.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied Cartridge 119 is rated 2,100 sheets; replacement 119 II is rated 6,400 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. International Cartridge 719 declarations are excluded.
Software and support
Native Secure Print holds a job for panel PIN release, with a default 30-minute validity and memory limits. Close Remote Scanner before opening Secure Print when the guide requires it. The 50,000-page maximum duty is not a recommended routine volume.
Electrical edition and setup
The U.S. operating body is 15⅜ by 18⅝ by 17 inches and about 42.3 lb including toner. Optional paper feeding changes height. U.S. power is 120–127 V at 60 Hz.
