Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF424dw capture both faces of Legal color originals in one pass to an Ethernet folder and print PIN-held duplex Letter jobs with 350 included Letter sheets?
Yes. The prepared LAN File procedure supports two-sided originals and the exact model has a single-pass feeder. Native UFR II/PCL supports eligible Letter duplex and Secure Print. Letter input is 350 sheets at 20 lb Bond, and 3,500 monthly pages fits the recommendation.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it produce color printouts from those color scans?
No. MF424dw captures color but has a monochrome laser print/copy engine.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the glass scan an entire Legal original?
No. The glass covers Letter/A4; Legal originals require the feeder. Automatic duplex input does not enlarge the glass.

The Canon imageCLASS MF424dw, U.S. item 2222C003, combines monochrome printing and copying with color scanning, Send and telephone fax. It suits a supported office workflow that needs automatic two-sided original capture and native secured-job output without requiring color printouts.
Its single-pass feeder is useful for two-sided contracts and forms. The printer’s automatic output duplex is a separate function. The standard paper supply is 350 Letter sheets; the 900-sheet headline requires an additional cassette.
A prepared folder provides a complete duplex scan routine
The feeder reaches Legal and holds 50 Letter originals at 80 gsm. The glass reaches 8.5 by 11¾ inches, covering Letter and A4. Use the feeder for complete Legal pages and the glass for suitable bound or fragile material.
The operating manual documents sending scans to a computer shared folder or FTP location. Prepare the supported destination and credentials, register its address from the computer, then choose Scan, File and that destination at the machine. This is a device sender, separate from an application’s capture command.
Choose the original size, color mode and file format. For two-sided originals select Book or Calendar in Send Settings, then Start and confirm the destination if prompted. Only one file destination is permitted for that operation. Feeder completion starts sending automatically; a glass sequence uses Scan Next Original and finally Start Sending.
Native computer software needs its own installation
USB, Gigabit Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support native computer use. Install the exact supported drivers and MF Scan Utility. Windows LAN scanning requires registration in MF Network Scanner Selector and uses IPv4; the guide excludes IPv6 for that capture route. USB avoids registration but needs an awake device.
MF Scan Utility can save the capture or pass it to a selected application. A compatible TWAIN or WIA application can invoke ScanGear MF or WIA. If automatic online mode is disabled, first choose Scan and Remote Scanner at the panel. Some applications may need originals scanned individually, despite the presence of an automatic feeder.
MF424dw supports UFR II and PCL 5/6. The shared brochure explicitly limits Adobe PostScript 3 to MF426dw. A generic PostScript driver or shared operating-system heading does not add that language to this variant.
PIN release holds a native print job temporarily
Choose Secured Print in the supported native driver’s Output Method and submit the document with its settings. At the device, close Remote Scanner if it is open, choose Secure Print, select the document and Start, then enter its matching PIN and Apply.
The machine deletes unreleased documents after the configured retention period. Stored jobs occupy memory and can affect ordinary printing, so collect or remove them promptly. This procedure is distinct from administrator login and does not guarantee the same submission controls in every mobile application.
Count 350 included sheets before considering expansion
The exact U.S. input declaration is a 250-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet bypass, totaling 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb Bond. Optional 550-sheet AH1 equipment raises the maximum to 900 but is not part of that base supply. The shared brochure cover actually shows the optional cassette configuration.
The actual paper table confirms native automatic duplex for eligible Letter, Legal and A4 stock. Envelopes and labels are excluded from that automatic path. Use the permitted source for the intended medium and register size and type correctly on the machine and in the driver.
AirPrint, Mopria and Canon PRINT Business offer supported mobile printing, including a direct wireless arrangement. Their available settings depend on the service and application. Native PIN submission and the prepared folder workflow remain separate operating choices.
Volume, toner and physical fit
Canon declares up to 40 one-sided Letter ppm, versus 32 for Legal, and recommends 500–4,000 monthly pages. Scanner images-per-minute figures use their own resolution, color and document conditions; they are not additional print-speed claims.
The supplied 052 cartridge and standard replacement are rated 3,100 pages; 052 H raises the declared yield to 9,200. The actual manual uses ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. Actual coverage and environment change consumption.
The operating guide gives 17⅞ inches wide, 18¼ deep and 15½ high, resolving the brochure’s mislabeled dimension order. Its 35.7 lb excludes toner; installed weight remains unestablished here. Leave additional room for the bypass, feeder and service access rather than using the closed-body measurements as installation clearance.
