A useful fit for

Compatible native desktop offices needing color duplex capture and mono printing within 4,000 recommended monthly pages.

The main tradeoff

This exact model has no fax; Legal glass, expanded input capacity and loaded weight must not be assumed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible Ethernet desktop color-scan both sides of Legal originals in one pass while printing mono Letter duplex with PIN collection and 350 included Letter sheets?

Yes, using the native driver, registered IPv4 scanner and suitable originals. The exact 453 has single-pass Legal feeder capture, Letter duplex, native PIN release and a recommended maximum of four thousand monthly pages.

A fast mono three-function MFP, with no fax hardware

The Canon imageCLASS MF453dw suits a compatible desktop office that needs monochrome printing, color document capture and copying, with a fifty-sheet single-pass duplex feeder. Its 350-sheet included Letter supply and recommended 750–4,000 monthly pages make it a useful documented office reference. The deciding limits are the shorter glass, optional expanded paper capacity and the exact three-function scope.

The US model is item 5161C011. Its original function column says Print, Copy and Scan; fax belongs to the nearby MF452dw in that brochure. A shared send-destination row mentioning Super G3 does not add a modem to this exact model. The preserved earlier fax lead is therefore corrected.

Single-pass capture and the actual computer connection

The original brochure explicitly identifies a single-pass duplex feeder. The operating specification confirms automatic two-sided feeding through Legal size, with appropriate originals from fifty to 105 grams per square meter. The fifty-sheet capacity is separately qualified for ordinary Letter originals rather than presented as fifty sheets of every possible size.

Color capture remains separate from monochrome print output. Canon’s Letter scan rates distinguish color and black, simplex and duplex, at 300-by-300 dpi. Those image-per-minute declarations should not be substituted for the forty-ppm Letter printing figure.

The actual computer procedure uses compatible scanner software, MF Scan Utility or ScanGear MF. USB requires installation and waking the machine before scanning. Windows network capture additionally registers the machine in MF Network Scanner Selector. The exact preparation chapter excludes scanning over an IPv6 arrangement; use IPv4 or USB for that documented routine.

The glass accepts originals through 8.5 by 11.75 inches in the detailed operating table, supporting Letter and A4. Suitable Legal originals use the feeder. A bound Legal original that cannot feed needs a larger documented glass, even though the printer accepts Legal output paper.

Keep native secure jobs separate from mobile printing

The machine includes USB, Gigabit Ethernet and ordinary wireless, with UFR II, PCL and PostScript support. In a compatible native driver, choose Secured Print as the output method. The document waits in machine memory until the user selects it at Secure Print and enters its PIN.

Stored documents expire after the configured deletion time, and uncollected secure jobs occupy memory that may affect ordinary printing. A panel must also leave the Remote Scanner screen before entering secure-job collection. These are practical limits of the actual protected workflow, rather than a promise of unlimited permanent storage.

AirPrint and Mopria are positively listed, and Wi-Fi Direct can create a hotspot for compatible devices. Those are separate supported printing arrangements. Their presence does not establish the native driver’s PIN controls or the same computer-scanning configuration through every mobile protocol.

Included paper and automatic duplex

The standard configuration combines a 250-sheet cassette and a one-hundred-sheet multipurpose tray, declared as 350 Letter sheets at twenty-pound bond. A separate 550-sheet cassette expands the maximum to nine hundred; it is optional and is not counted as included equipment.

The actual US paper table positively marks Letter, Legal and A4 for ordinary input and automatic two-sided printing. Its supported and unavailable cells are image icons, which were checked in the original table instead of inferred from extraction that lost them. Appropriate heavier stock, labels and envelopes have separate feed and duplex restrictions.

The numeric 350-sheet capacity is expressly Letter-qualified in the exact package specifications. Accepted Legal or A4 media is not by itself a separate confirmation of that exact loaded capacity, so those numeric size-specific totals remain unassigned. Up to ten suitable envelopes use the MP route under the documented handling conditions.

Consumables, weight and placement

Cartridge 057 supplies a declared 3,100 pages in the box; the separate 057 H option is declared at ten thousand. No current cartridge price or measured cost per page is assumed. The recommended monthly maximum is four thousand pages, independently of cartridge yield or an unspecified maximum duty cycle.

The detailed operating body is 17⅞ inches wide, 18¼ deep and 15½ high, slightly different from rounded brochure figures. Both sources quote 35.7 pounds, but the brochure says it includes consumables while the operating footnote excludes toner; loaded weight remains unknown. The US power range is suitable for 120 V, 60 Hz. Allow the stated ventilation, open-lid, tray and service space, and choose a documented fax variant when telephone fax is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

40 one-sided Letter ppm, separately 32.4 Legal ppm. Letter scan 13/38 color/black simplex and 26/70 duplex ipm at 300 dpi in brochure. Recommended 750–4,000 monthly pages; duty unknown.

Paper handling

Included 250 cassette plus 100 MP, 350 Letter sheets at 20 lb. Optional 550 cassette excluded; 900 is expanded maximum. Actual US paper-table icons positively mark Letter/Legal/A4 automatic duplex. Legal/A4 numeric included stack capacity remains unassigned. MP envelopes up to ten under conditions.

Scanning arrangement

Exact single-pass duplex feeder; original range through Legal with 50–105 g/m² suitable stock. Fifty-sheet capacity is Letter-qualified. Detailed original glass reaches 8.5 × 11.75 inches for Letter/A4, not Legal. Color computer capture; USB or registered IPv4 network, not IPv6.

Computer and mobile connections

1 GB, five-inch touchscreen, USB, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct. Native scanner and protected-job arrangements use compatible installed software. Exact MF453dw is Print/Copy/Scan without fax; generic Super G3 destination row and inherited fax lead are excluded.

Supplies and declared yields

Cartridge 057 declared 3,100 pages and included; 057 H declared 10,000 pages. No yield standard is invented from the cited declaration and no live cost is calculated.

Software and support

USB scanning requires software and wake from sleep; Windows network capture registers in MF Network Scanner Selector. Native Secure Print uses driver Output Method, held document selection and panel PIN; expiry and memory limits apply. AirPrint/Mopria/peer printing do not inherit those native controls.

Electrical edition and setup

Detailed operating body 17⅞ W × 18¼ D × 15½ H inches differs slightly from brochure 17.8 × 18.3 × 15.4. Loaded weight unknown: same 35.7 lb is marked including consumables in brochure and excluding toner in original. Power original 110–127 V, 60 Hz, brochure 120–127 V. Allow original ventilation and occupancy space.
