imageCLASS MF455dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

Prepared network-folder capture of two-sided Legal originals with native automatic duplex output.

The main tradeoff

Legal does not fit the glass. AH1 paper expansion and the listed PDF security features require additional options.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can MF455dw scan both sides of Legal originals in one pass to a prepared Ethernet folder and automatically duplex Legal monochrome output?

Yes. The exact hardware specifies a single-pass duplex ADF, and File Send Settings provides the two-sided original control. Register the folder and use eligible native Legal stock. The glass remains Letter/A4.

Can the entire Legal original fit on its glass?

No. The glass maximum is 215.9 × 297 mm, covering Letter/A4. Use the feeder for a suitable Legal original.

Will the base machine provide 900 included input sheets?

No. Standard input is 250 + 100, or 350 sheets. The additional 550-sheet AH1 is optional hardware.

Monochrome output with a positively identified single-pass feeder

The Canon imageCLASS MF455dw combines monochrome printing and copying with color scanning and faxing. Its exact support specification identifies a single-pass duplex automatic document feeder. That is stronger evidence than a generic duplex label, and it is useful for an office regularly digitizing both faces of suitable originals.

The machine’s native output languages include UFR II, PCL 5/6 and Adobe PostScript 3. Select the exact supported driver for the intended computer rather than assuming every installed queue exposes the same paper, security or application controls.

Prepare a real file destination for duplex original capture

For a network folder or FTP workflow, configure the destination first and register its address from a computer in the Address Book. At the panel select Scan, then File and the registered destination. Enter any required authentication before relying on a recurring batch routine.

Send Settings contains original size, file format, orientation and Two-Sided Original. Choose Book Type or Calendar Type to reflect the reverse image’s direction, then start and confirm the destination when prompted. The documented control and exact single-pass hardware establish the complete LAN duplex-capture route.

PDF and TIFF can combine pages or divide them into individual files. JPEG has a one-page restriction when the original is on the glass. Encrypted and digitally signed PDF features are listed as optional, so they are not treated as included functions.

Legal originals belong in the feeder

The feeder accepts originals through Legal and holds fifty Letter sheets at Canon’s eighty-gram paper basis. Its glass reaches 215.9 by 297 millimeters, covering Letter and A4. Legal printing and Legal feeder intake do not enlarge that glass.

Use the glass for thick, bound or unsuitable feeder material. Fan and align a suitable feeder stack, load it face up, secure the guides and remain below the limit line. Do not add or remove pages during capture. Automatic front-and-back capture does not apply to a page lying on the glass.

Native computer capture has separate preparation

Install the exact scanner driver and MF Scan Utility. Windows network scanning requires registration in MF Network Scanner Selector and an IPv4 arrangement; the guide excludes that scanner function over IPv6. USB requires installed software without the network-registration step.

For panel-to-computer capture, choose Scan, Computer, the destination and scan type, then start. Close an open ScanGear MF screen first. A glass PDF sequence uses Scan Next and Finish. Compatible TWAIN or WIA applications have their own documented import procedure.

That application procedure does not expose every duplex control in the read chapter, so the verified single-pass computer-destination plan uses the actual network File workflow. A general scanner specification is not used to invent an unseen application setting.

Count 350 included sheets and apply duplex media rules

The base input consists of a 250-sheet drawer and hundred-sheet multipurpose tray. The additional 550-sheet AH1 cassette is optional. If installed later, it also needs the driver’s Device Settings updated before the queue can use it correctly.

Letter, Legal and A4 are marked for automatic duplex in the actual operating table. Plain and eligible Heavy 1 stock through 120 gsm can use that path; Heavy 2/3, labels and envelopes cannot. Envelopes use the multipurpose tray.

Register the actual paper size and type before printing. The general source quantity is not a verified input count for every exact size. Native driver priority settings can override the machine’s paper registration, so check which source of settings governs the job.

Read supplies and physical figures on the correct basis

The supplied 057 toner is rated for 3,100 pages, as is standard replacement 057. High-capacity 057 H is rated for ten thousand under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. Those are toner conditions, not a monthly workload recommendation.

Canon rates one-sided Letter output at forty pages per minute and Legal at thirty-two. Color scanner throughput has its own resolution and side-count basis. The actual body measures 17⅞ by 18¼ by 15½ inches; the operating weight excludes toner, so an installed weight is not inferred. Provide the specified U.S. supply, surrounding clearance and access for the opened feeder and trays.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

40 one-sided Letter pages per minute, versus 32 for Legal. Color ADF capture at 300 dpi is separately rated at 13.4 simplex/26.9 duplex pages per minute, distinct from black-and-white 38.1/70.5. Recommended monthly volume is unknown.

Paper handling

350 included generic sheets; optional 550-sheet AH1 excluded. Native Letter/Legal/A4 duplex accepts the documented Plain/Heavy 1 categories through 120 gsm. Heavy 2/3, labels and envelopes are excluded from duplex. Exact-size quantity is unestablished.

Scanning arrangement

The exact specification identifies a single-pass duplex ADF. It holds 50 Letter originals at 80 gsm and reaches Legal; the glass is Letter/A4. The LAN File procedure establishes automatic duplex capture; the native utility’s documented simplex route remains separate.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, Gigabit Ethernet, infrastructure Wi-Fi and direct wireless are documented. Windows native LAN capture requires IPv4 registration. Folder delivery needs separate setup; analog fax requires a compatible telephone arrangement.

Supplies and declared yields

Supplied 057: 3,100 pages. Replacement 057: 3,100; 057 H: 10,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 using A4 and default density. Cartridge 052 is not substituted. Listed PDF security options are not standard.

Software and support

Native UFR II, PCL 5/6 and Adobe PostScript 3 are confirmed. The model has four functions, color capture and monochrome output. No native PIN-release workflow or compulsory subscription is inferred from generic service text.

Electrical edition and setup

Base body: 17⅞ × 18¼ × 15½ inches. The 35.7 lb figure excludes toner, so loaded weight is unknown. U.S. power: 110–127 V, 60 Hz. The operating guide’s 150-sheet output controls the conflicting web figure. Allow 100 mm around the body and opening access.
