Canon imageCLASS MF4690 review

An earlier four-function model with two different capture paths

The Canon imageCLASS MF4690 is an earlier monochrome laser printer, copier and telephone fax with a color scanner. It offers a USB computer workflow and wired network printing, plus device-initiated delivery to a prepared file server or mail server.

Those connections do not provide identical scanning methods. The exact Starter Guide explicitly says the computer scanner driver is available only through USB. Ethernet file sending is a separate device function, rather than a network version of MF Toolbox scanning.

USB capture uses the original MF software

The original Windows setup installs MF Drivers and MF Toolbox 4.9 before the computer cable is connected. Its dated system requirements describe Windows 98 through Vista-era environments, with particular Server 2003 restrictions. They do not establish support for an arbitrary current system.

For a computer scan, place the original, press Scan, start MF Toolbox and select the intended button, then press Start. The saved result follows the selected software settings. The read scanner specification confirms color capture, even though printed output is monochrome.

Native printing uses the application’s File and Print commands, the correct UFR II LT or PCL5e/PCL6 driver, and its Properties or Preferences. The exact guide distinguishes these supported monochrome drivers from generic descriptions of color PCL software.

Legal originals reduce the feeder quantity

The feeder accepts originals through 8.5 by 14 inches. Its ordinary maximum is 35 sheets at 80 gsm, but the actual document table reduces Legal originals to ten. A general 35-sheet ADF headline should therefore not describe a ten-inch-high stack of Legal forms.

Fan and align the documents, adjust the guides and load them face up. Do not add or remove originals during scanning. Remove finished originals from the delivery tray, and avoid feeding stapled, curled, coated or otherwise unsuitable material.

The glass supports Letter/A4 geometry and suitable books within the stated thickness and weight limits. It cannot capture a full Legal page. Its inch and metric maximums are printed inconsistently in one table, so the model’s A4-size geometry is interpreted from the explicit 216 by 297 mm dimensions. Automatic two-sided original capture is not established here.

Prepare the actual SMB destination

Ethernet uses the machine’s 10Base-T/100Base-TX port and a configured IP address. For file delivery, prepare a compatible server and register its SMB host, folder path, login and password in the Address Book’s one-touch or coded entry. The reference environment is a legacy Windows/NetBIOS-over-TCP/IP arrangement.

Select the registered destination rather than typing a raw file-server address with the numeric keys. The guide uses the E-Mail: Color sending mode when color images are being delivered to a file server as well as to mail. Choose the appropriate file format, resolution and original type before Start.

JPEG sends separate page files. Compact PDF has its own resolution and original-type conditions. For supported glass sequences, scan each page and complete the sequence as directed. These steps should not be substituted for the USB utility’s buttons.

Automatic output duplex is confirmed, with a size boundary

The actual printer menu has Two-Sided Printing and binding controls, establishing automatic output duplex. The read chapters do not establish its exact native print-duplex size list. This review consequently retains that capability only for an unrestricted output-size requirement in its native matching plans.

Copying separately documents Letter and A4 two-sided output at 64–80 gsm, made from one-sided originals. That copy specification does not establish Legal duplex printing or an automatic duplex scanner.

The cassette maximum is 250 sheets or a one-inch stack, with a separate one-sheet multipurpose tray. Legal loading leaves the cassette’s front panel open and adjusts its guide. Match the machine’s paper size and type after changing stock.

Starter yield and maximum duty are separate figures

The included Cartridge 104 Starter is rated for approximately 1,000 pages; replacement 104 for approximately 2,000. The actual guide specifies ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. The web replacement row’s coverage wording is not used to increase the included yield.

Canon declares up to 21 Letter print ppm. The 7,500-page maximum monthly duty is not a recommended routine volume. Its support body measures 15.4 by 17.4 by 14.6 inches, while the unclear weight basis leaves loaded carrying weight unestablished here.
