Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF4880dw scan single-sided Legal color originals to a supported Ethernet computer and print duplex Legal monochrome documents?
Yes. Its native MF driver/MF Toolbox arrangement supports network capture after scanner registration, with Legal simplex feeder intake and eligible Legal automatic output duplex. Analog fax uses a separately prepared compatible line.
Explore this need in the finder →Can its feeder automatically capture both faces of a document stack?
No. MF4880dw has a 35-sheet simplex feeder. The shared guide reserves automatic two-sided original functions for MF4890dw.
Explore this need in the finder →Can this machine produce color printouts from a color scan?
No. Its scanner captures color, but the laser print and copy output are monochrome.

The Canon imageCLASS MF4880dw, U.S. item 6371B010AA, provides monochrome printing, copying, color scanning and telephone fax. It combines automatic two-sided output with a 35-sheet simplex document feeder, making it useful for an existing supported office setup handling one-sided forms.
It should not be confused with MF4890dw. The original specification sheet gives that neighboring model a larger duplex feeder and two-sided original functions. MF4880dw’s duplex capability applies to printing; it does not automatically capture the reverse faces of a stack.
Use the feeder for complete Legal originals
The operating guide separates the original routes. The glass reaches 8.5 by 11¾ inches, covering Letter and A4. The feeder reaches Legal, with a 35-sheet Letter capacity at 80 gsm. A book or suitable fragile original belongs on the glass; a complete Legal page belongs in the feeder.
Fan the stack, align its edges, load it face up below the limit guides and adjust the side guides to its width. Do not add or remove originals during capture. A two-sided original requires a separate pass for the reverse faces and attention to the final file order.
Install the scanner on the computer that will use it
USB, Fast Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support the documented native workflows. Install the exact supported MF drivers and MF Toolbox on the intended computer. The operating guide explicitly says scanning is unavailable through drivers merely shared from another computer.
Network capture needs registration in MF Network Scan Utility. That step is separate from making a print queue work. Once prepared, select Scan, Computer, the destination and the desired preset at the machine. A feeder job starts directly; a multipage glass PDF sequence uses Scan Next Original followed by Store and Finish.
The Scan-to-PC shortcut can store a destination and frequently used settings. It is useful when the same workstation receives recurring forms, but it still depends on that computer’s installed software and destination setup.
MF Toolbox distinguishes files from direct sending
For more control, choose Remote Scanner at the panel and open MF Toolbox 4.9 on the computer. Select a mode such as Save, PDF, OCR or Mail, then configure source, document size, color, resolution and output location.
Mail prepares an attachment through the computer’s mail application; it does not establish standalone SMTP sending from the printer. PDF controls can create a multipage file or append to an existing PDF. Some file options are platform-specific, so confirm the exact supported system and application.
ScanGear MF can preview and crop a suitable original before capture. Select the scanner-driver display option, start it, set the desired region and scan. The OCR mode has different controls and does not expose that same ScanGear option.
Output duplex and paper quantity have separate conditions
The actual paper chapter confirms automatic duplex for Letter, Legal and A4 on eligible stock. In the native driver choose two-sided output and the binding edge. Match the machine’s size/type registration to the loaded paper before sending the job.
The cassette holds 250 sheets at 60–80 gsm, with a separate one-sheet multipurpose route. Heavier plain paper lowers the declared quantity to 170, and other categories have their own limits. The generic capacity is not treated here as a verified quantity for every exact paper size.
Envelope Monarch uses the multipurpose route. Envelopes, labels and supported special stock should be assessed using their actual loading rules instead of the plain-paper duplex setting. The Quiet Mode button may reduce operating sound, but the guide says it slows processing and does not apply to every size or type.
Keep fax, speed and supplies in their proper roles
Analog fax needs a compatible telephone line and receive mode. PC fax is sending only, while documented forwarding is fax-to-fax; neither means received faxes automatically become computer files. Ethernet scanning remains a separate workflow.
Canon rates one-sided plain Letter printing at up to 26 ppm and duplex at up to 16 pages per minute. The latter is not 16 two-sided sheets. Its 10,000-page maximum monthly duty is not a recommended workload range.
The box lists a starter Cartridge 128, but its yield is unestablished in the read source. Replacement 128 is rated approximately 2,100 pages on the stated ISO/IEC basis. The closed body measures 15.4 by 14.3 by 14.2 inches and weighs 28 lb with cartridge. Leave room for paper access, feeder opening and servicing.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Up to 26 one-sided plain Letter ppm and separately 16 duplex Letter pages per minute. Duplex pages are not physical two-sided sheets. Quiet Mode slows processing and is unavailable with some media.
Paper handling
250-sheet cassette at 60–80 gsm, with 170 for heavier plain stock and lower heavy/rough categories, plus one-sheet multipurpose feed. Letter/Legal/A4 native automatic duplex is confirmed on eligible stock. Envelope Monarch uses the multipurpose route.
Scanning arrangement
35 Letter originals at 80 gsm with simplex intake through Legal. Glass reaches 8.5 by 11¾ inches, covering Letter/A4. Only MF4890 supplies the shared guide’s automatic two-sided input.
Computer and mobile connections
USB, Fast Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi are documented for supported native print/capture. Exact language is UFR II LT. No direct Wi-Fi, AirPrint, Mopria or native PIN capability is inferred from a generic app or mobile-print label.
Supplies and declared yields
Box lists Starter Cartridge 128 without a verified starter yield. Replacement Cartridge 128 is rated approximately 2,100 pages on the maker ISO/IEC basis; the read brochure does not identify the precise standard or coverage condition.
Software and support
All four functions are documented. PC fax is sending only; forwarding is fax-to-fax. MF Toolbox capture and native driver output need installation on the actual computer. Maximum duty is 10,000 pages; recommended volume remains unestablished.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact MF4880 body is 15.4 by 14.3 by 14.2 inches and 28 lb with cartridge, versus 26.7 lb without. U.S. operation specifies a grounded 120 V AC outlet. A compatible telephone line and receive-mode setup are separate from LAN access.
