A useful fit for

Compatible desktop networks capturing two-sided Legal stacks and printing ordinary mono documents.

The main tradeoff

Legal requires the feeder; dated software and unspecified duplex mechanics limit modern workflow assumptions.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible Ethernet computer color-scan both sides of Legal originals and print Legal duplex with 250 included sheets?

Yes, using installed MF Drivers/Toolbox and network-scanner registration. The exact 4890 has automatic two-sided feeder capture and the US paper chapter supports Legal output duplex; the glass remains shorter.

Can a bound Legal original lie entirely on its scanner glass?

No. Even the larger actual operating-glass limit is only 11.75 inches long; Legal is a feeder route.

Does the duplex ADF specification prove single-pass capture?

No. Automatic two-sided capture is confirmed, but the examined exact sources do not establish its physical mechanism.

An earlier mono MFP with a genuinely duplex feeder

The Canon imageCLASS MF4890dw is an earlier monochrome laser all-in-one for compatible computers needing print, copy, color capture and fax over USB or an ordinary wired or wireless network. Its fifty-sheet automatic two-sided feeder is the useful distinction from the nearby MF4880dw and MF4770n. The main tradeoff is dated software support and a glass surface that cannot accept a full Legal original.

The actual brochure comparison assigns the duplex feeder and all-mode duplex to MF4890dw alone. The other models’ similar appearance and shared driver package do not make their input hardware interchangeable. This assessment concerns the US 6371B006AA reference and does not imply present stock or a newly supported computer platform.

Computer capture needs installed scanner software

The exact primary specification positively lists both push and pull scanning over USB and network. The operating guide explains the working arrangement: install the MF Drivers and MF Toolbox, place the originals, choose the computer destination or Remote Scanner mode, and use the relevant application settings.

For network scanning, first register this machine in MF Network Scan Utility. The original expressly says that sharing a driver installed on someone else’s computer does not provide scanner access; install the MF Drivers on the computer doing the capture. That is a meaningful setup requirement for a small shared office.

The exact US Toolbox instructions provide a two-sided Input Method specifically for MF4890dw, together with source, document-size, orientation and binding controls. Automatic capture of both original sides is therefore supported. The examined sources do not establish whether the mechanism reverses the original or uses simultaneous sensors, so single-pass scanning remains unknown.

Legal originals go through the feeder

The original document table supports suitable feeder originals through 8.5 by fourteen inches and distinguishes the weights for one- and two-sided sheets. Its fifty-sheet capacity uses the stated ordinary-paper basis. Use appropriate loose pages, correctly aligned guides and the load-limit marks; curled, stapled or fragile originals need another approach.

The brochure and web describe the glass as Letter-sized. The actual operation guide instead gives an 8.5-by-11.75-inch maximum and shows an A4 alignment mark, establishing Letter and A4 glass capture. That operating evidence still stops well short of Legal. A bound or delicate Legal original that cannot enter the feeder needs a larger documented glass.

Scanning is color-capable, while laser printing and ordinary copies are monochrome. Optical 600-by-600-dpi capture is separate from interpolated resolution. Searchable PDF and other file options depend on the installed software; they do not guarantee error-free text recognition.

Print duplex and paper supply are separate from scanning

The exact US paper chapter explicitly marks Letter, Legal and A4 for automatic print duplex on MF4890dw/MF4880dw. Use the compatible driver’s two-sided setting and correct binding edge. An original’s two-sided scan setting and a printed sheet’s duplex setting solve different parts of the workflow.

The ordinary cassette holds 250 suitable sheets at sixty to eighty grams per square meter. The separate multipurpose route takes one sheet, rather than adding a second normal stack. Heavier paper has lower listed capacities. Appropriate envelopes have their own cassette and manual-feed limits, including a multipurpose-only restriction for Monarch.

Canon declares up to twenty-six one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately sixteen ppm in its two-sided Letter mode. The source’s original duplex unit is retained rather than relabeled as completed sheets. Its ten-thousand-page duty cycle is not a recommended monthly workload.

Supplies and a supported older setup

The single-cartridge system uses Cartridge 128, with approximately 2,100 replacement pages under the maker’s ISO/IEC declaration. The box list names a starter cartridge, but the read sources do not establish its numeric yield. A replacement declaration should not become an inbox-yield promise for an older unit.

The documented body is 15.4 inches wide, 14.5 deep and 14.2 high, with 29.5 pounds including cartridge. The US operating requirement is a standard grounded 120 V outlet. Leave room for the feeder, lid, Legal paper and maintenance. A newer documented MFP is the useful alternative when current mobile protocols, assured driver support or single-pass capture is essential.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

26 one-sided Letter ppm. Separate two-sided Letter declaration 16 ppm retained in original unit. Scan rates at Letter 300 dpi are separate from print speed. 10,000 monthly duty is not a recommended volume.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette at 60–80 g/m²; separate one-sheet MP feed. Exact US e-Manual marks Letter/Legal/A4 automatic duplex. Heavier paper has lower capacities. Envelope cassette up to twenty under conditions; Monarch MP-only, one at a time.

Scanning arrangement

Own 4890 fifty-sheet automatic duplex feeder; Legal-capable original range with distinct simplex/duplex weights. Duplex mechanism unestablished, so no single-pass claim. Original glass 8.5 × 11.75 inches and A4 marks support Letter/A4, despite marketing Letter-only wording; no Legal glass. Color capture, mono print/copy.

Computer and mobile connections

128 MB shared, UFR II LT host-based; USB, 10/100 Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n infrastructure Wi-Fi. Exact USB/network computer capture is positive. Network requires MF Network Scan Utility registration and local MF Drivers; a shared remote driver does not provide scanning. No mobile protocol or PIN print-release plan established.

Supplies and declared yields

Single-cartridge system, replacement Cartridge 128 approximately 2,100 pages under maker ISO/IEC declaration. Starter cartridge included, numeric starter yield unknown.

Electrical edition and setup

US operation requires grounded 120 V AC. Body 15.4 W × 14.5 D × 14.2 H inches; 29.5 lb with cartridge, distinct from 28.2 lb without and 38.8 lb carton. Earlier software compatibility needs checking for the actual computer.
