Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can MF525dw scan two-sided Legal originals in a single pass and print duplex Letter over Ethernet with 650 sheets ready?
Yes, with its supported native computer driver and scanner software. It has a Legal glass, single-pass feeder and a 650-sheet standard Letter supply; configure network scanning with IPv4 and registration.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the base printer provide 2,300 sheets of standard Letter input?
No. Standard input is 650 sheets. Reaching 2,300 requires three optional 550-sheet feeders, which are excluded from this base configuration.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the color scanner also produce color printed reports?
No. Capture can retain color, but the laser printing and copying engine is monochrome.
Explore this need in the finder →A Legal-size multifunction reference for a shared workgroup
The Canon imageCLASS MF525dw is an earlier monochrome multifunction reference for a workgroup that handles substantial document intake as well as printing. Its defining distinction is genuine Legal-size original handling on both the glass and the feeder. A bound or fragile Legal page can therefore use the glass instead of depending on a feeder path.
Printing, copying, color scanning, sending and telephone fax are documented standard functions. The five-inch color touchscreen is an interface; it does not make printed output color. Choose this model around monochrome office documents and color file capture rather than a requirement for color reports.
Use the right original route and scanner software
The single-pass feeder captures both sides of an eligible original without a reversing pass. It accepts originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches. Its 50-sheet stack declaration is specifically for Letter originals at 80 gsm, so that number should not automatically be extended to every allowed size and weight.
Use the glass for bound or unsuitable feeder material. Canon recommends glass placement for greater scanning accuracy because the original remains still. For a stack, fan and align the pages, load them face up, fit the guides and remain below the load line. Mixed sizes and damaged or clipped originals require special care rather than a larger forced stack.
Computer capture needs its own preparation. The actual U.S. instructions require Windows users on wired or wireless LAN to register the device in MF Network Scanner Selector. That capture arrangement uses IPv4; the guide does not permit IPv6 in its place. USB avoids network registration, but the printer must be awake before scanning.
MF Scan Utility can save files, hand them to an application or prepare an email attachment. ScanGear MF adds preview, area and image adjustments. A compatible TWAIN or WIA application has its own controls and may not accept subsequent feeder pages correctly; Canon advises scanning one at a time in that situation. The presence of an advanced feeder does not remove software-specific limits.
Base paper capacity is 650 sheets
The standard Letter supply is 650 sheets at 20 lb bond: a 550-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet bypass. The brochure's 2,300-sheet maximum needs three optional 550-sheet feeders. Its cover photograph also explicitly shows an optional cassette. Neither the photo nor the maximum should be read as the base contents.
The actual paper table permits automatic two-sided Letter, Legal and A4 output with eligible media. Envelopes and labels use the bypass and do not have the same duplex permission. The bypass also accepts heavier stock than the cassette. Select the correct source, size and type in the driver and machine settings; a broad maximum-weight headline is not permission to duplex every sheet.
If optional feeders are added later, update the native driver's device settings so that the installed configuration is known to the computer. Adding physical trays and selecting a source in an application are separate steps. This review matches the standard configuration rather than assuming expansion hardware.
Native confidential printing has a concrete release process
The native driver offers Secured Print as an output method. Send the job, walk to the printer, select Secure Print and the held document, then enter its PIN. This avoids immediately placing that document in the common output tray. It is a job-release workflow, distinct from the administrator password or network authentication settings.
Held jobs occupy memory and expire after the configured interval. Release them promptly, and close the Remote Scanner screen before trying to enter Secure Print. Optional uniFLOW and card readers provide separate management arrangements; their licenses and hardware are not treated as included. A listed mobile printing service also does not establish native PIN release within the same mobile application.
Plan workload, supplies and working space separately
The brochure declares up to 45 one-sided Letter ppm, 36 Legal ppm and a recommended monthly range of 2,000–7,500 pages. Its duplex scanning image rates are separate measures. Supplied Cartridge 041 and the standard replacement are rated at 10,000 pages; 041 H is rated at 20,000 under ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. No measured running cost is assumed.
The operating manual gives a body of 19.5 inches wide, 18.25 deep and 17.75 high. Its quoted 41.9 lb excludes toner, so loaded weight remains unknown. Allow more space for glass access, trays and servicing. MF525dw fits a workflow that benefits from the larger glass and base paper supply, provided its exact drivers and intended document routes are verified.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The brochure declares up to 45 one-sided Letter ppm and 36 Legal ppm. Its 70 monochrome and 26 color duplex scan ipm are image rates, not print speeds; the operating table uses a separate A4 scan test.
Paper handling
Standard 650 Letter sheets at 20 lb bond. The 2,300-sheet maximum requires three optional 550-sheet feeders. Letter, Legal and A4 automatic print duplex is supported with eligible media; envelopes use the bypass and do not duplex.
Scanning arrangement
Genuine Legal-size glass and a single-pass two-sided feeder accepting originals up to 8.5 by 14 inches. The 50-sheet feeder capacity is specifically Letter at 80 gsm. Color computer capture requires its supported scanner software.
Computer and mobile connections
Native USB, Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi computer printing and capture are documented. Direct wireless and listed mobile printing are separate arrangements. Native driver PIN release does not establish the same feature in AirPrint.
Supplies and declared yields
Supplied Cartridge 041 and its standard replacement are rated 10,000 pages; 041 H is rated 20,000. The actual guide specifies ISO/IEC 19752 on A4 at default density. Supply prices and measured cost per page are not assumed.
Software and support
Application Library offers configured task buttons. uniFLOW, card readers and PDF security features are separately optional; their licenses and authentication equipment are not assumed included.
Electrical edition and setup
Actual U.S. body is 19.5 by 18.25 by 17.75 inches, powered at 120–127 V, 60 Hz. The quoted 41.9 lb excludes toner; loaded weight remains unknown. Leave space for the large glass, trays and cartridge access.
