imageCLASS MF6160dwIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A supported workgroup that needs native PIN printing and automatic two-sided color capture of loose originals.

The main tradeoff

The glass is Letter/A4 class, the feeder mechanism is unestablished, and PostScript belongs to MF6180dw.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can MF6160dw combine native USB Legal duplex printing with automatic color capture of both faces of a Legal original and PIN release?

Yes. The supported native desktop arrangement documents those print and capture routines. Configure two-sided input in MF Toolbox, and leave Remote Scanner mode before releasing a secured print job.

Does its automatic two-sided feeder prove single-pass scanning?

No. The actual instructions establish automatic two-sided input, but the physical method is not established. It is not represented as single-pass.

Can a full Legal original lie flat on its glass?

No. The glass is Letter/A4 class. Use the Legal-capable feeder for a suitable loose Legal original.

A native desktop workflow with a useful duplex feeder

The Canon imageCLASS MF6160dw is an earlier monochrome laser multifunction model for an established workgroup that needs printing, copying, analog fax and color original capture. Its useful distinction is the combination of automatic print duplex and a feeder that accepts two-sided originals through the documented desktop software.

The deciding limits concern the document route. A loose Legal original fits the feeder, but a full Legal page does not fit the Letter/A4 glass. Automatic two-sided input is documented; the available instructions do not establish a single-pass mechanism.

Set up the actual computer capture arrangement

Install the exact supported printer and scanner software rather than choosing a nearby model because its name looks similar. For network capture, MF Network Scan Utility registers the scanner through its checkbox and confirmation controls. The manual limits the number of registered computers to ten; an occupied registration is a setup issue, not evidence that network printing also configured capture.

At the machine select Remote Scanner, then open MF Toolbox 4.9 on the computer. Choose a capture button and set source, size, color, file type and destination. Auto source mode gives a loaded feeder priority over the glass, which matters when a sheet remains in the feeder after an earlier task.

The Input Method setting explicitly selects one-sided or two-sided originals. For two-sided input, set the original orientation and binding location so the reverse face is interpreted correctly. These controls establish a usable duplex capture routine without requiring an unsupported claim about the internal transport mechanism.

File behavior affects the finished document

MF Toolbox separates single-page PDF, multipage PDF and adding pages. Its Add Page option is restricted to a PDF created by MF Toolbox; it is not a general editor for every existing PDF. The Mail button also depends on a computer email application rather than creating an independent SMTP service inside the printer.

Choose resolution for the route and intended result. The feeder and Auto source settings have a different resolution range from the glass. Selecting the scanner-driver display transfers detailed control to that driver and disables some Toolbox settings. Check the resulting file and page order before committing a long stack to a repeated preset.

Use supported paper for native duplex printing

The actual paper chapter positively identifies Letter, Legal and A4 for automatic two-sided printing. Match the loaded size and type to the machine and native driver, then choose duplex output and the appropriate binding edge. Support for a physical sheet in a tray does not put every stock type into the duplex path.

The included configuration is a 250-sheet cassette and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray on the stated normal-paper basis. Heavy stock reduces capacity, and the separate PF-44 cassette is optional. The generic 300-sheet total is not presented as a verified exact-size quantity for every possible medium.

The feeder holds fifty ordinary originals or thirty Legal originals at the documented weight basis. Duplex originals have their own weight range. A compact stack of thick originals should therefore be assessed by the original specifications rather than by the printer cassette headline.

PIN release and AirPrint use different controls

For a secured native job, select secured output in the driver and supply the user information and PIN. Release the chosen document at the panel with its PIN. Retention time and secure-print activation are machine settings, so an old held document may be deleted before its user arrives.

The guide identifies a practical conflict: secured release is unavailable while the machine waits in Remote Scanner mode. Leave that mode first. AirPrint is a separate supported shared-network output route; the brochure specifically excludes using USB printer sharing through a computer, AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule for that feature.

Check exact supplies and the physical installation

The supplied Cartridge 119 is declared at approximately 2,100 pages. Replacement 119 and 119II are declared at 2,100 and 6,400 pages respectively under Canon’s stated ISO/IEC 19752 A4 default conditions. These are yield declarations, not measured ownership results or current running costs.

Canon rates one-sided Letter output at thirty-five pages per minute and duplex output separately at seventeen. Its maximum monthly duty does not provide a recommended sustained monthly range. The exact MF6160dw supports UFR II LT and PCL; the neighboring MF6180dw PostScript emulation is not transferred to it.

The body is 15⅜ by 18⅝ by 17 inches and weighs 42.1 pounds including toner. Allow additional operating access and verify exact software support for the intended computer. A routine requiring Legal glass or proven single-pass capture needs separately documented hardware.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

35 one-sided Letter pages per minute and 17 duplex pages per minute are separate maker ratings. A 50,000-page maximum duty is not a recommended monthly volume.

Paper handling

250-sheet cassette plus 50-sheet multipurpose tray on the normal-paper basis; optional 500-sheet PF-44 is excluded. Heavy media reduce quantities. Letter, Legal and A4 automatic duplex are explicitly documented for eligible media.

Scanning arrangement

Letter/A4 glass and Legal-capable feeder. The feeder holds 50 ordinary or 30 Legal originals at the stated 80 gsm basis. Two-sided originals require 64–105 gsm. Automatic duplex scanning is established, but its mechanism is unknown.

Computer and mobile connections

USB, Fast Ethernet and infrastructure Wi-Fi support the documented native desktop arrangement. AirPrint uses a separate supported LAN output plan. No Wi-Fi Direct or Mopria support is inferred.

Supplies and declared yields

Supplied Cartridge 119: approximately 2,100 pages. Replacement 119: 2,100; 119 II: 6,400, under ISO/IEC 19752 using A4 and default settings. These declarations do not establish a current cost per page.

Software and support

MF6160dw supports UFR II LT and PCL; the MF6180dw PostScript emulation is not inherited. Toolbox Add Page requires a PDF created by MF Toolbox, and the Mail button uses a computer email application.

Electrical edition and setup

Body: 15⅜ × 18⅝ × 17 inches, 42.1 lb including toner. U.S. power: 120–127 V, 60 Hz. Optional cassette, open covers, originals and paper paths require additional space.
