B1163w (US 110–127V wireless configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A small compatible computer desk needing monochrome output, individual color capture and optional AirPrint use.

The main tradeoff

It has no fax or document feeder; automatic print duplex and full named-sheet scanning coverage are not established.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible USB desktop print monochrome Legal sheets from a confirmed 150-sheet ordinary-paper input?

Yes. Legal printing and the ordinary tray capacity are explicit. This does not promise Legal scanning.

Can a configured wireless network provide AirPrint printing when no specific paper size or scan function is required?

Yes. The w model has an explicit AirPrint setup. Bonjour and IPP configuration and actual device compatibility still need verification.

Can the B1163w automatically capture a batch through an ADF?

No. This model uses a flatbed with individual placement and has no automatic document feeder.

A small monochrome MFP for individual originals

The Dell B1163w combines black-and-white laser printing with copying and a color-capable flatbed scanner. It can suit a small desk where occasional documents are positioned by hand and wireless printing is useful. Its main limitations are equally practical: no fax, no automatic document feeder and no automatic two-sided printing.

Check the exact w model and its regional configuration. Dell's guide distinguishes it from the USB-only B1163, and its hardware overview shows the simple scanner lid and glass. Generic feeder wording elsewhere in the shared instructions does not establish a feeder on this machine.

Keep desktop capture and mobile printing separate

A compatible USB desktop installation can provide printing and flatbed capture using the documented software routes. The Windows WIA routine specifically needs USB. The guide separately describes network TWAIN and supported Mac network capture, allowing a suitable wireless desktop arrangement after actual software compatibility is established.

AirPrint is positively documented for the B1163w. Its setup requires the printer to be on the network with the relevant Bonjour and IPP services enabled. That is a printing workflow. It does not prove that an Apple device can also capture originals from this scanner or expose every desktop-driver paper option.

Wi-Fi Direct is another documented arrangement, enabled through the printer settings and used with compatible mobile printing software. Its connection password concerns joining the printer's local network. It is not a code that holds a confidential document until collection.

Check the captured area before archiving records

The flatbed handles one positioned original at a time. Open the lid, align the item with the registration guide and preview the image. Dell recommends keeping the glass clean, since contamination can appear in the result.

The exact brochure declares a maximum scanning area of 208 by 297mm. It does not name full-sheet Letter or A4 capture in that declaration. A paper size accepted by the print tray is not automatically an equally sized captured image. Check the preview against the information near every important edge before archiving a form.

There is no feeder route for a stack of records or a full Legal original. ID copying is a manually attended routine: the original is turned on the glass so both sides can be arranged on one output side. It is not automatic two-sided scanning.

One tray serves ordinary and special stock

The ordinary tray holds 150 suitable sheets, with Letter, Legal and A4 explicitly listed. Manual feeding uses that same tray, so it does not create another sheet position to add to the total. Special materials have different limits and loading instructions.

The guide identifies manual two-sided printing as a Windows feature. Someone must handle the reload and verify orientation. An Eco button, booklet layout or long-edge setting does not create an automatic duplexer. Choose a machine with the actual mechanism when unattended packets are a regular requirement.

Read the workload and supply figures in context

Dell declares up to 21 one-sided Letter pages per minute. Its US brochure separately labels a recommended monthly range of 200–800 pages and a maximum monthly duty of 20,000. The maximum is not a recommended routine target or a measurement from this assessment.

The declared shipped cartridge is smaller than the standard replacement. Inspect the actual toner and the condition of feeding and fusing parts. A historical lifetime-component description does not establish the present condition of an earlier unit.

Make the setup prove itself

Verify the electrical label and the actual driver, network and application together. Choose the B1163w when that working monochrome print and individual flatbed workflow covers the desk's needs.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm, separately from 20 A4 ppm. The exact US brochure labels 200–800 pages as recommended monthly print volume; 20,000 is maximum monthly duty.

Paper handling

One included 150-sheet ordinary-paper tray supports Letter, Legal and A4. Manual-feed mode uses the same tray and adds no separate input position. Windows manual duplex needs reloading; there is no automatic print duplexer.

Scanning arrangement

This model has a flatbed for individually placed originals and supports color capture. It has no document feeder or automatic two-sided scanner. The exact brochure states a 208 × 297 mm maximum scan area without naming full-sheet Letter or A4 capture. The confirmed flatbed route is retained with its named-size coverage unknown; Legal capture is not promised.

Computer and mobile connections

The reviewed US w configuration includes USB 2.0 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, with no Ethernet port. Wi-Fi Direct is an enabled, app-dependent mobile-printing arrangement. Check the actual regional radio configuration.

Supplies and declared yields

The original US brochure declares a 700-page shipped cartridge and a 1,500-page standard replacement under ISO/IEC 19752. The actual cartridge, country compatibility and remaining condition need inspection. Historical cloud-service names do not establish a currently usable service.

Software and support

Compatible USB WIA/TWAIN and wireless network TWAIN or supported Image Capture provide desktop flatbed capture. AirPrint is separately documented for w, with Bonjour and IPP enabled on the wireless network; it is a printing plan, not proof of computer scanning. Its named paper sizes and envelope options remain unestablished. Wi-Fi Direct needs compatible mobile software; it is not silently equated with AirPrint. A Confidential watermark and wireless setup PIN do not establish held-job PIN release.

Electrical edition and setup

Use the documented US 110–127 VAC edition after checking the unit label. Guide body dimensions are 389 × 274 × 249 mm, about 15.31 × 10.79 × 9.80 inches. The guide and brochure give different loaded weights, so weight remains unknown. Leave space for the scanner lid, paper handling and maintenance.
