B3460dn (US 100–127V configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A wired office producing black-and-white documents within a recommended 15000-page monthly maximum.

The main tradeoff

Wireless is optional, native phone protocols are unconfirmed, and there is no scanner.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a wired computer job combine PIN release, 650 Legal sheets and 15000 monthly pages?

Yes. The documented base paper paths, computer PIN routine and recommended workload support this combination.

Is native AirPrint established by the historical Android app reference?

No. A manufacturer application is not proof of native AirPrint support.

Can the base printer use a wireless network without additional hardware?

No. Wireless networking requires a separately sold adapter.

A monochrome workgroup printer with room to expand

The Dell B3460dn is an earlier monochrome laser printer aimed at a busy office producing reports, correspondence and other black-and-white documents. Its useful starting points are included Gigabit Ethernet, a substantial standard paper supply and documented PIN collection. It does not include a scanner, copier or fax facility.

Dell recommends 3000–15,000 pages monthly in the original US sheet. The separate 175,000-page maximum duty figure is not the same thing as an ordinary workload recommendation. Compare the expected routine with the recommended range, then consider maintenance condition and the practical demands of an older machine.

Separate long-run throughput from short-job waiting

The manufacturer declares up to 50 Letter pages per minute, with a different 47ppm figure for A4. These are paper-specific rates rather than interchangeable numbers. Actual throughput also changes with the document, settings and operating conditions, especially when printing complex pages or only a few sheets.

The first-page declaration is measured from the ready state. It should not be treated as the guaranteed delay after every long idle period. For a team sending a few large document batches, sustained throughput may be useful; for many isolated pages, wake-up and application behavior deserve attention as well.

The base machine already holds a useful amount of paper

The included arrangement is a 550-sheet cassette and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, totaling 650 sheets. Both paths explicitly list Letter, Legal and A4. The multipurpose route additionally accommodates suitable envelopes and other specified media, with their own size and weight restrictions.

Optional 550-sheet trays can increase the total to 2300 sheets. Dell illustrates several extended configurations, so confirm the actual number of installed trays before comparing listings. A base machine and a fully expanded tower share the B3460dn name but offer a different refill routine and require different installation space.

Automatic duplex and particular media need separate checks

Automatic two-sided printing is included. That establishes a useful office function, but a general paper-size list does not independently prove that every size and stock can use the duplex path. Check the applicable manual and driver before relying on a particular two-sided Legal or specialty-media job.

The same caution applies to heavy covers, labels and envelopes. A feeder accepting a material for one-sided output does not make it suitable for every layout or return path. Plan around the actual everyday paper, rather than choosing solely on the longest list of materials in a brochure.

Use the documented PIN routine with the right driver

Dell explicitly describes holding computer print jobs until the user enters a PIN at the printer. It also describes limiting failed entry attempts and deleting the related jobs after that limit is exceeded. Configure the feature with the actual driver and application, and confirm that users know how to collect their work.

This computer-job routine should remain distinct from historical Android printing through Dell's application. A reference to a mobile app does not establish native AirPrint or Mopria, nor does it prove that today's phone can use the same PIN workflow. USB and Ethernet are included; wireless requires a separate adapter.

Check the consumables and installed condition

The original shipment included a 6000-page cartridge, while replacement choices had several declared yields. The imaging drum is a separate maintenance item. Original yield statements can help identify compatible supply families, but they do not reveal the actual remaining toner or drum life in a particular used unit.

The base printer weighs about 34.6lb with consumables and measures roughly 15.7 × 15.0 × 12.1 inches closed. Allow working clearance and extra height for optional trays. Choose it around a confirmed monochrome office workload, a compatible computer connection and the actual installed configuration, after checking voltage, drivers and service condition.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Up to 50 ppm Letter or 47 ppm A4. Recommended monthly volume 3000–15000 is distinct from 175000 maximum duty. First page from ready is declared at up to 6.5 seconds; actual file and operating conditions matter.

Paper handling

Standard 550-sheet cassette plus 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, 650 total. Both explicitly accept Letter, Legal and A4. Three optional 550-sheet units expand to 2300 total; they are not included. Automatic duplex is included but this sheet does not enumerate its sizes, so no particular duplex size is inferred. Envelopes use the multipurpose path.

Scanning arrangement

B3460dn is a dedicated monochrome laser printer; there is no document scanner, ADF, copying or fax function.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB 2 computer and Gigabit Ethernet, plus front USB host. Wireless needs the separately sold external adapter. Historical Dell Mobile Print Android application requires a shared network; it does not establish native AirPrint or Mopria support or current application availability.

Supplies and declared yields

Originally included 6000-page cartridge. Replacement choices 2500, 8500 and 20000 under ISO/IEC 19752; imaging drum has a separate 60000-page declaration. Original 2012 CPP marketing assumed then-list-priced extra-high-yield Use and Return consumables and is not a current running-cost estimate.

Software and support

Included 800MHz processor and 256 MB RAM, maximum 1280 MB; 2.4-inch color LCD with numeric keypad. Computer-job PIN release is explicitly described, including configurable failed-PIN attempts and job deletion. Optional hard disk, encryption card and wireless adapter are separate from the base printer. Native phone PIN behavior is not established.

Electrical edition and setup

US low-voltage model: nominal 100–127 VAC at 47–63 Hz. Closed body 15.7 × 15.0 × 12.1 inches; 34.6 lb with consumables. Extra paper units add height and additional paper, cable and service access is needed.
