B5460dnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible wired office sharing substantial black-and-white documents with controlled computer-driver job release.

The main tradeoff

It has no scanner, wireless needs optional hardware, and native phone PIN release is not established.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible wired computer combine Legal duplex, confidential PIN release, 650 standard sheets and the 63 ppm Letter declaration?

Yes. Those capabilities belong to the documented Ethernet computer-driver configuration; use approved ordinary paper and supported software.

A dedicated printer for a shared monochrome workload

The Dell B5460dn is an earlier monochrome laser printer built around fast document output, included automatic duplex and expandable paper handling. It is a useful model to investigate when several people need a shared black-and-white printer rather than a machine that also captures originals. Its document scanner, copier and fax capabilities are absent, regardless of the number of network features listed.

The important comparison is the actual working configuration. A base B5460dn, a unit with several additional drawers and one equipped with optional wireless hardware do not offer the same installation. Establish the included equipment before relying on a headline maximum.

Start with 650 sheets, then plan any expansion

The standard arrangement combines a 550-sheet drawer with a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. That provides 650 physical sheets in the included paths. The original guide separately checks Letter, Legal and A4 for both paths and for automatic duplex, making ordinary two-sided documents a confirmed part of the design.

Use the correct size and paper-type settings in both the printer and the application. An accepted envelope is not automatically suitable for duplex, and heavy stock needs its own approved handling instructions. The paper-turning mechanism should not be treated as permission to run every printable material through both sides.

Optional trays can expand the physical total to 4,400 sheets. A large 2,100-sheet option has a prescribed bottom position, while supported tray stacks require the appropriate base and installation. Confirm the accessories and available working clearance rather than planning a tall stack from the maximum number alone.

Separate the speed declaration from a normal workload

Dell declares up to 63 one-sided Letter pages per minute and separately lists 60 for A4. Those figures describe an original rated document speed. They are not a measurement of every application, the first sheet of an individual job or the time required for complex files and different finishing settings.

The 275,000-page maximum monthly duty declaration is also different from an everyday workload recommendation. The reviewed family table labels another range as typical use. For an earlier machine, inspect its page count, maintenance history, rollers and current condition, then check that a representative workload runs correctly with the intended software.

Choose the connection and the privacy workflow together

USB computer printing and Gigabit Ethernet are included. Wireless requires optional equipment. A wired printer can still participate in the documented AirPrint arrangement when it shares an ordinary router network with the phone; that does not establish a direct phone-to-printer wireless connection.

The original compatible computer-driver workflow supports confidential Print and Hold jobs with a four-digit PIN. That is useful when documents should wait until the person reaches the printer. Set up the supported driver and test job submission and release on the actual installation, including what happens if a user sends an ordinary immediate-print job instead.

AirPrint support does not independently prove native phone PIN release. The held-job instructions also describe memory limits: confidential jobs in RAM may be removed when memory is needed and disappear at shutdown. A separate menu for limiting invalid PIN attempts requires an optional formatted hard disk. These are different conditions, so check the complete workflow when privacy matters.

Inspect the physical unit and its supplies

The original family specification lists a 10,000-page shipped cartridge and several replacement capacities. A current offer may contain a different or partly used cartridge. Compare the actual supplies and their availability rather than treating the largest compatible yield as something included with every printer.

Check the voltage label, cabinet orientation and access space before committing to a location. Allow room for paper loading, output collection and service access as well as any optional drawers. Choose the B5460dn for a verified wired monochrome document routine, with the paper configuration, compatible software and confidential-job behavior confirmed on the unit you intend to use.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Dell declares up to 63 one-sided Letter pages per minute, or 60 A4. The 275,000-page monthly figure is a maximum duty declaration. The separate 3,500–30,000 range is labelled typical use, so it is not treated as a verified recommended-volume interval.

Paper handling

Included 550-sheet tray and 100-sheet multipurpose feeder provide 650 sheets. The original guide’s physical page 62 separately confirms Letter, Legal and A4 in both standard paths and automatic duplex. Optional trays can expand the total to 4,400; the 2,100-sheet option belongs at the bottom of an approved supported stack. Envelope duplex is excluded.

Scanning arrangement

The B5460dn is a printing-only monochrome laser machine; it does not include a document scanner, copier, ADF or fax.

Computer and mobile connections

Included USB computer printing and Gigabit Ethernet. Wireless needs optional hardware. AirPrint is documented on an ordinary shared network, including a wired printer connected to the same router network as the phone; direct wireless and native Mopria are not independently established.

Supplies and declared yields

Original family table lists a 10,000-page shipped cartridge and 6,000, 25,000 or 45,000-page replacement choices under ISO/IEC 19752. These reference yields do not establish the cartridge supplied with a present offer or its remaining life.

Software and support

The original compatible computer-driver Print and Hold workflow supports a four-digit confidential-job PIN using digits 0–9. Native AirPrint PIN release is not established. Confidential jobs held in printer RAM can be evicted for memory and are lost on shutdown; the separate invalid-PIN-limit menu requires an optional formatted hard disk.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US support identity is verified, but the reviewed sources do not establish the actual unit’s voltage: check its rating label. The family table labels body dimensions as 20.2 × 16.7 × 16.3 inches and loaded weight as 52.2 lb. Confirm width and depth orientation on the actual unit before using a tight space; allow paper access, ventilation and added tray height.
