Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can compatible USB color printing use 125 ordinary Legal sheets and an occasional envelope routine?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and compatible legacy print software. Legal fits the supplied multipurpose path; up to ten envelopes use that tray as a separate loading job.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the supplied L include Ethernet for network sharing?
Fails. It has an expansion slot, but the Jetdirect network card is optional. The included n/tn network package is a different configuration.
Explore this need in the finder →Can USB A4 reports print on both sides automatically?
Fails. The original two-sided procedure is attended manual refeeding through Tray 1, with no automatic duplex arrangement established.

The HP Color LaserJet 2500L is an earlier color printer for a compatible computer setup, with a small standard paper supply and manual two-sided handling. Its included configuration is a 125-sheet multipurpose tray, USB and parallel ports, and an expansion slot for an optional print-server card. The bare slot is important: it does not mean an Ethernet server is already installed.
HP's exact US reference identifies C9705A#ABA and marks it discontinued. The original series setup guide separates this L from the 2500 with its added cassette, the network-equipped n and the taller tn. Assess the supplied accessories individually when looking at an earlier machine. A family photograph can show paper and network hardware that a normal L never included.
Start with a workable computer connection
Direct USB is the supported named finder route here. Parallel is another physical connection for an appropriately equipped computer, but the original guide says not to connect both ports at once. It describes completing the period software installation, connecting the selected cable before restarting and then checking the chosen printer. A separately supplied cable and genuinely compatible software are prerequisites, not minor details to resolve after committing.
The optional Jetdirect card is a different network arrangement. The original 615n card is included with n and tn configurations, rather than the L. No built-in Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, AirPrint or Mopria routine is established by the read material. Included PIN-release printing also remains unconfirmed. None of those functions should be assumed because the printer has an expansion slot.
Its hardware prints only. The original parts list describes paper paths, toner-carousel controls, a separate imaging drum and print-status lights, without a scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. A color print engine is not a color scanner.
Paper loading is part of the routine
The original ordinary-paper capacity is up to 125 sheets at 75 g/m² in Tray 1. Its documented size range accommodates Letter, A4 and Legal. Open the support, extend it for longer material, load paper print-side up with the short top edge first and bring the guides gently to the stack. Avoid bending sheets or changing the paper while printing.
An optional 250-sheet cassette can reduce loading interruptions. A further 500-sheet feeder requires that cassette first and supports Letter and A4, rather than every longer format. Neither accessory counts in the standard L input. The 125-sheet finished-paper bin is an output destination and should not be added to the input total.
Envelopes use the multipurpose tray, with up to ten documented. The rear output path provides a straighter route for the relevant special material. Choose suitable laser media and the correct driver type, and follow its loading orientation. Occasional envelopes and labels can fit this routine, but there is no dedicated second input waiting with a different stock in a base L.
Manual duplex and color speed need realistic expectations
To print both sides, the original driver routine prints the first side, then requires someone to remove unused paper and return the printed stack to Tray 1. The blank side faces up and the top edge enters first; the panel resumes the job. This can serve occasional reports when someone is nearby. It is not unattended automatic duplex, and the actual compatible driver's controls should be checked with a small document first.
The original technical data-sheet excerpt explicitly rates A4 output up to 16 black pages per minute and 4 color pages per minute. The read material does not independently establish Letter rates, so those fields remain unknown. The later 2550 engine's black speed is not substituted. No monthly recommendation is invented from the speed rating, and none of these declarations is our measured result.
Supplies and the space around the printer
The original package includes four toner cartridges and a separate imaging drum. The guide declares about 5,000 black pages and 4,000 per color, while drum life changes sharply between black-only and color use. Verify the actual compatible supplies and what remains in an earlier unit; these declarations are not a running-cost calculation or a promise of current availability.
Without optional trays, the original body is about 18.98 by 17.76 by 12.8 inches and 47.5 pounds with supplies. Leave room for loading, the rear output and servicing, and keep its ventilation paths clear. Inspect the actual electrical plate because separate regional supplies exist. Keep this configuration when a compatible USB setup already works; choose a documented current network, duplex or multifunction printer when those needs are essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original exact series data-sheet excerpt explicitly rates A4 up to 16 black ppm and 4 color ppm. The original general engine statement does not independently label Letter, so Letter rates remain unknown rather than borrowing the later 2550 engine. No exact recommended monthly range or maximum duty established in the read material; no measured performance claim.
Paper handling
Included 125-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 on original 75-g/m² ordinary-paper basis. Its 76 × 127 to 216 × 356-mm supported range covers Letter/Legal/A4. Optional 250-sheet Tray 2 excluded; optional 500-sheet Tray 3 requires Tray 2 and only adds Letter/A4. Up to ten envelopes use Tray 1/rear straight output. Manual duplex requires attended Tray 1 refeeding with the blank side up/top edge first. Output 125 is separate.
Scanning arrangement
Original complete parts, control panel and four-color laser configuration have no physical scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. A paper cassette or toner-carousel control is not an original-document feeder.
Computer and mobile connections
Included USB and parallel ports cannot be connected simultaneously in the original setup. The base L EIO slot accepts an optional Jetdirect network card; the 615n Ethernet card is included on n/tn, not L. No standard Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct plan. The USB plan requires genuinely compatible legacy print software and an appropriate separately supplied cable.
Supplies and declared yields
Original package includes four color-process toner cartridges and a separate imaging drum. The original guide declares about 5,000 black pages and 4,000 per color; no ISO measurement basis is invented from that table. Drum life is separately around 20,000 black-only pages, 5,000 color pages or 6,000–8,000 average, depending on use. Verify exact compatible consumables and actual remaining supply; no live stock, cost-per-page or cartridge condition claim.
Software and support
Original direct Windows installation completes software, connects either USB or parallel before restarting, then checks the selected printer. A demo page is an original operating check, not a test performed for this review. Manual two-sided jobs use actual driver controls and attended refeeding. Historical OS/software references do not guarantee present support. AirPrint, Mopria and included job-PIN release remain unknown.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact discontinued US C9705A#ABA confirmed. Original no-extra-tray body is 18.98 × 17.76 × 12.8 inches, 47.5 lb with supplies. Optional trays create a taller/heavier configuration and are excluded. Allow open multipurpose/rear-output and service space; keep left/rear vents clear. Separate 115–127-V, 60-Hz and 220–240-V, 50-Hz editions are documented without independent actual-plate mapping, so mains compatibility remains unknown.
