Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can native Ethernet color printing use 125 ordinary Legal sheets and a separate envelope routine?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and genuinely compatible desktop software. The internal Jetdirect server is included; Legal and envelopes use the supplied multipurpose input in separate jobs.
Explore this need in the finder →Does Ln provide 375 supplied Letter sheets?
Fails. Its standard input is 125. The 250-sheet cassette is optional on Ln and included on n; the extra network letter in the suffix does not add paper.
Explore this need in the finder →Can Ethernet printing include automatic duplex for A4?
Fails. The documented two-sided routine is manual and depends on compatible driver controls and attended refeeding.
Explore this need in the finder →The Ln adds sharing, rather than a larger paper supply
The HP Color LaserJet 2550Ln is an earlier wired-network color printer for an office that can still support its software and paper routine. Its defining addition over the L is an included internal HP Jetdirect print server for 10/100Base-T Ethernet. It retains the single 125-sheet multipurpose input. The 250-sheet cassette belongs in the optional-accessory column for Ln, even though it is supplied with the nearby n configuration.
The exact US identity is Q3703A#ABA, which HP marks discontinued. Assess the actual printer and installed options before considering it for a new role. Its original hardware prints only: there is no scanner, copier, document feeder or fax. A network socket makes printing shareable; it does not make this a network scanner.
Establish a usable network printing arrangement
The original setup connects a twisted-pair cable from the internal Ethernet port to an active network port. With the printer ready, the documented buttons print configuration, Jetdirect and supply-status pages. Locate the printer's IP address there and use the appropriate network installation procedure. That provides a concrete starting point when checking an existing unit, rather than guessing whether an external print server needs to be added.
Computer USB and legacy parallel are also present. Their original setup connects the cable at the installation prompt, using an appropriate separately supplied cable. These routes assume genuinely compatible print software. Historical Windows, Mac and browser lists describe the original environment, not guaranteed support on a present-day computer.
No built-in Wi-Fi or standard Wi-Fi Direct arrangement is established. AirPrint, Mopria and an included PIN-release workflow also remain unconfirmed. Do not substitute generic wireless or private-print advertising for an actual supported routine. For an office requiring those functions, a model with documented current support is easier to evaluate.
Paper and manual duplex require attention
The supplied multipurpose tray holds up to 125 ordinary sheets on the guide's 75-g/m² basis, or up to ten envelopes. Its documented size range accommodates Letter, A4 and Legal. Extend the support, load paper print-side up with the top short edge first and adjust the guides gently. Avoid fanning the stack or adding sheets while the printer is running.
An optional 250-sheet cassette can reduce loading interruptions. The additional optional 500-sheet feeder requires that cassette first and supports Letter and A4, rather than every longer paper size. Neither counts as included Ln capacity. The finished-paper output bin must also be kept separate from the input total.
Envelopes and labels use the multipurpose tray, with the rear straight output path available for the documented special-material routine. Choose a suitable laser material and its driver type. This is useful for occasional mailing, but someone must load and remove the relevant material rather than expect a dedicated envelope feeder.
Two-sided printing is manual. After the first side finishes, remove unused sheets from Tray 1, place the printed stack back with its blank side up and top edge first, then resume from the panel. The original guide excludes the PS driver and then-current Mac OS X from this manual-duplex feature. Confirm the actual compatible driver before making a large two-sided report part of the regular workload.
Color speed and supplies need separate figures
The original technical table specifies up to 20 Letter black pages per minute, separately 19 on A4, while color is only 4 ppm on either size. A conflicting Swedish opening sentence gives a larger color number; the technical table and an independent original language edition support the lower figure used here. Black-text speed should not be used to estimate how quickly a color presentation will finish. These are maker declarations, not our test results.
The exact recommended monthly range and maximum duty are not established by the read source material, so no workload target is invented from the engine rate. Likewise, the original Ln supplied-color yield is inconsistent between an inheritance paragraph and its explicit supplies table. It remains unconfirmed here.
Replacement toner and the imaging drum are separate purchases. HP's exact Q3703A supply table identifies the compatible black and color families and uses standard A4 paper at 5-percent coverage for declared life. Those older coverage-based figures are not modern ISO yields or evidence of toner remaining in an earlier printer.
The practical decision
Check the actual electrical plate, because the original guide lists separate regional supplies. It also lacks a separate exact Ln body and weight row, so this assessment does not borrow the L or n measurements. Allow room for open trays, rear output and service work. Keep the Ln when its compatible wired color-printing setup already earns its space; choose a documented larger-input, automatic-duplex or multifunction configuration when those needs are essential.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original technical feature table rates up to 20 Letter black ppm, 19 A4 black ppm and 4 Letter/A4 color ppm; Chinese original independently confirms the shared engine. Swedish opening 16-color-ppm sentence is not used. No exact recommended monthly volume or maximum duty established here; no inferred workload from speed.
Paper handling
Ln includes only the 125-sheet multipurpose Tray 1, 75-g/m² ordinary-paper basis. Its continuous documented size range covers Letter/Legal/A4. The 250-sheet cassette is optional on Ln, while n includes it; 500-sheet Tray 3 additionally needs Tray 2 and only takes Letter/A4. Up to ten envelopes use Tray 1/rear straight output. Manual duplex needs attended refeeding through Tray 1 and a suitable driver. Output capacity is not input.
Scanning arrangement
Original complete print-engine/parts/control configuration has no scanner, copier, original feeder or fax. Color laser printing is not color scanning, and generic toner-page ADF claims are rejected.
Computer and mobile connections
Exact Ln includes internal HP Jetdirect 10/100Base-T Ethernet as well as computer USB and IEEE-1284 parallel. Original network setup uses an active wired port, prints the configuration/Jetdirect page and locates the printer IP. No included wireless or standard Wi-Fi Direct plan, and no external server is needed for its documented native Ethernet route.
Supplies and declared yields
Original black declaration is about 5,000 pages at 5-percent coverage. Ln in-box color yield is unconfirmed because its L-inheritance paragraph points to 2,000 while the explicit original Ln supplies row says 4,000. Exact maker Q3703A table lists Q3960A black, Q3961A/Q3962A/Q3963A colors about 4,000 and Q3971A/Q3972A/Q3973A alternatives about 2,000, plus separate Q3964A imaging drum, on standard A4 5-percent coverage. Not ISO, remaining toner or current US availability.
Software and support
USB/Ethernet plan assumes genuinely compatible legacy print software and correct installation; period OS/browser lists do not guarantee present support. Original manual duplex excludes the PS driver and then-current Mac OS X. It refills Tray 1 blank-side up/top edge first after the first side, then resumes at the panel. AirPrint, Mopria and included PIN release remain unknown, rather than inferred from network presence.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact discontinued US Q3703A#ABA established. Original body table separately names L and n but lacks an exact Ln body/weight row, so none is borrowed. Allow open multipurpose/rear-output and service space. Separate 115–127-V and 220–240-V, 50–60-Hz electrical editions are documented without an independent actual-plate mapping, so mains unknown. USB/parallel/network cables are separately supplied.
