Color LaserJet 3500Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible USB computer workflow needing color documents and 350 included sheets, where manual duplex is acceptable.

The main tradeoff

No standard network server, automatic duplex, scanner or fax. Recommended monthly workload and modern mobile/PIN setups remain unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a base 3500 print color Legal documents over USB with 350 included sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and a compatible exact JetReady driver. Both included feeds support Legal, totaling 350 ordinary sheets; the USB interface is standard.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the base printer automatically duplex A4 without handling the stack?

Fails. The exact 3500 supports manual duplex only; the guide assigns automatic duplex to separate 3700 configurations.

Does the guide confirm that 1,000 pages a month is its recommended workload?

Fails a selected recurring-volume requirement because no recommended monthly range was established. The 1,000-page example estimates supply timing, and 45,000 is maximum duty.

A direct USB color printer with manual duplex

The HP Color LaserJet 3500 is an earlier print-only color laser for a compatible directly connected computer. HP's US product page identifies Q1319A#ABA and marks it discontinued. This assessment covers its documented 100–127-volt configuration. The base printer includes a USB 2.0 connection, rather than the external Ethernet print server supplied with the separate 3500n.

Its scope is straightforward: produce black or color computer documents using the correct driver and ordinary supported media. It has no scanner glass, document feeder, paper-original copier or fax. The similar 3700 family has different ports, printer languages and duplex configurations, so those features are not transferred to this model.

The included 350 sheets support Letter, Legal and A4

Standard input is 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2. The original guide separately lists Letter, Legal and A4 for the main cassette, while Tray 1's supported range covers those sizes. The combined 350-sheet ordinary-paper count is rated at 75 g/m² and depends on suitable media and loading conditions.

The additional 500-sheet Tray 3 is optional. It supports Letter and A4, not Legal, so even an expanded unit does not provide the larger capacity for every paper size. This standard assessment credits the included 350 sheets. Check tray guides and size/type settings rather than applying the largest family capacity to a different stock.

Occasional envelopes use up to ten appropriate envelopes in Tray 1 with the correct driver media setting. The ordinary-sheet and envelope figures describe different loads. Do not use special stock simply because it fits physically; the guide specifies media weights, suitable laser materials and loading instructions.

Two-sided output needs someone to reload the stack

The exact US specification says manual duplex with driver support. The original guide assigns automatic duplex to particular 3700 models, not the 3500. Its manual routine opens the rear output, prints the first side, then asks the user to put the stack into Tray 1 for the reverse side.

Tray 1's capacity matters during that second pass. For a larger manual-duplex job, the guide directs the user to feed successive groups of up to 100 sheets when prompted. That is a hands-on process, not unattended sheet turning. If automatic two-sided printing is essential, the standard 3500 does not meet it.

The printer uses HP JetReady 4.0. A generic PCL or PostScript driver borrowed from a related-looking LaserJet is not an established replacement for the correct 3500 software. Confirm present-day compatibility and print an actual black and color file from the intended computer. The old installation guide's operating-system list is historical rather than a current support guarantee.

Judge workload and consumables using the right declarations

HP's exact technical material rates one-sided Letter output up to 12 pages per minute in black or color; the original Chinese specification separately identifies the same A4 rate. These are manufacturer claims, not our measurements. A later generic toner landing page contains different speed numbers that conflict with the exact technical record and is not used for this assessment.

The maximum monthly duty figure is 45,000 pages. A recommended recurring monthly range was not established and remains unknown. The guide's example based on 1,000 pages a month estimates supply replacement timing; it is not relabeled as a monthly recommendation.

The exact HP compatibility table lists Q2670A black, Q2671A cyan, Q2672A yellow and Q2673A magenta. This resolves the older English guide's inconsistent magenta part number. The guide estimates about 6,000 black and 4,000 each color A4/Letter pages at approximately five-percent coverage of each color. That historical basis is not presented as an ISO yield or remaining toner.

Request a supplies-status page, configuration information and sample output, and consider the separate transfer and fuser condition. The printer body is about 19.7 inches wide, 17.6 deep and 18.4 high, weighing 71.5 pounds; allow additional loading, rear and service space. Check the actual US voltage label. A complete 3500 can fit a defined earlier USB color workflow when its driver, 350-sheet input and manual duplex routine are acceptable.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Maker maximum 12 one-sided Letter pages per minute in black or color; original Chinese exact columns also state 12 A4. No measured or automatic-duplex rate. Maximum monthly duty 45,000 is not a recommended recurring volume; recommended range remains unknown. Manual 1,000 pages/month is only an illustrative supplies-life calculation.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 plus 250-sheet Tray 2, total 350 ordinary Letter/Legal/A4 sheets at 75 g/m². Added 500-sheet Tray 3 is optional and supports Letter/A4 only, not Legal. Ten suitable envelopes use Tray 1. Two-sided printing is manual reloading through Tray 1 with rear output open and correct driver controls, not automatic duplex.

Scanning arrangement

Color laser print-only hardware has no original scanner, document feeder, independent copier or fax. Computer copy-count options and networking do not add those functions.

Computer and mobile connections

Base 3500 standard connection is USB 2.0 to compatible computer. The en3700 Ethernet server belongs to included 3500n or an added accessory; parallel/EIO ports belong to 3700. No built-in Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct.

Supplies and declared yields

Exact HP compatibility row establishes Q2670A black, Q2671A cyan, Q2672A yellow and Q2673A magenta. The original guide page 199 prints inconsistent Q2773A for magenta; that is not retained against later exact HP table. Guide estimates 6,000 black and 4,000 each color A4/Letter pages at approximately 5% coverage of each color, not an ISO yield claim or installed remaining toner. Transfer/fuser intervals are separate.

Software and support

Use an exact compatible HP JetReady 4.0 computer driver; do not borrow the 3700 PCL/PostScript personalities, EIO/parallel ports or memory upgrades. Historical Windows/Mac software lists do not guarantee current support. AirPrint, Mopria and document PIN release remain unestablished; HP toolbox/status access is not proof of those functions.

Electrical edition and setup

Review is limited to documented US 100–127 V, 50/60 Hz printer configuration; 220–240 V stock is separate. Confirm actual rating label and current driver. Printer body 19.7 W × 17.6 D × 18.4 H in; loading/rear/service access and an external print-server arrangement require additional space.
