Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the standard network arrangement print color Legal documents with 400 ordinary sheets loaded?
Yes with the installed included JetDirect card, configured network queue and compatible driver. The 150-sheet multipurpose tray and 250-sheet cassette support suitable Legal ordinary paper on the 75 gsm basis. Envelope loading has separate smaller limits.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the N suffix include automatic two-sided Letter printing?
No. The original model list makes the duplex accessory optional on N and includes it on DN/HDN. An installed add-on must be checked separately.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the standard N provide private PIN release without adding storage?
No for the included arrangement. Private Job is a real documented function, but its job-retention chapter requires a hard disk and configured driver. The disk is optional on N.
Explore this need in the finder →The N suffix adds networking, not every family option
The HP Color LaserJet 4550n is an earlier color laser printer with an included JetDirect network card. HP identifies the reviewed US product as C7086A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. Its practical use depends on a compatible computer driver, a working network arrangement and the condition of the particular unit.
The family guide also describes DN and HDN configurations. Their additional paper, duplex and storage equipment is easy to mistake for a standard N feature. Check the suffix and installed hardware before comparing capacities or planning confidential printing.
Four hundred ordinary sheets come from two different paths
The N includes a 150-sheet multipurpose tray and 250-sheet cassette. Both original tables support suitable Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary paper on a 75 gsm basis. Together they provide 400 standard sheets without the optional 500-sheet expansion feeder.
The multipurpose tray also accepts special media under separate limits. Envelopes belong there alone, with a maximum of 10 suitable envelopes weighing no more than 90 gsm. Load their back flaps away from the printer, adjust the guides without bending them and set the actual envelope size and type.
The guide recommends configuring that tray as a cassette for controlled size/type selection. Its default First mode can pull whatever media is present regardless of those characteristics. This distinction matters on a shared printer, where a stray job should not consume a stack of envelopes or letterhead.
Automatic duplex is an accessory on this configuration
The automatic duplex unit mounts beneath the printer and is included on the documented DN and HDN models. It is optional on N. The appearance of duplex instructions or a compatible paper range in the family guide does not establish that the reviewed standard N can turn sheets automatically.
If the unit in front of you has been expanded, verify the accessory physically and configure its supported driver. Keep the accessory's ordinary-paper limits separate from those for one-sided special media. The base arrangement assessed here excludes the optional duplexer and expansion drawer.
A real private-job feature still needs a hard disk
The original guide describes a Private Job function. A compatible driver supplies a four-digit PIN, and the user selects the matching identity and job at the control panel before entering that code to release it.
However, the job-retention chapter first requires an installed hard disk and properly configured printer driver. The disk is optional on N and included on HDN in the model list. A standard N therefore does not satisfy an included PIN-release requirement.
Proof and hold, quick copy and stored jobs are separate choices with their own retention behavior. Do not treat an administrator setting, a remembered print queue or a confidentiality watermark as equivalent to the documented private-job arrangement.
Check the computer path and maintenance condition
JetDirect provides the reviewed network computer-printing arrangement. Configure the actual card and queue and verify compatible software. The original parallel port requires its proper connector; the guide does not establish a native USB or included wireless route. Ethernet alone also does not prove AirPrint or Mopria.
The guide headlines 16 black and 4 color pages per minute, but the reviewed sections do not explicitly establish a one-sided Letter basis for those figures. Media and job complexity change completion time. A monthly-page assumption used to estimate consumable intervals is not a recommended workload.
Separate toner, drum, transfer and fuser estimates also depend on coverage and the mix of black and color pages. Inspect actual maintenance messages and supplies. Allow access around the printer, confirm its electrical label and avoid assuming that optional hardware or full consumables accompany an earlier unit.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The guide declares 16 pages/min in black and 4 in color, with lower rates for transparencies and glossy stock. Those headlines do not explicitly identify one-sided Letter in the sections read, so strict Letter-speed fields remain unestablished. Job complexity, data transfer, memory and media affect completion. A consumable-life footnote assumes 2000 pages/month; that is not a verified recommended monthly workload or a duty ceiling.
Paper handling
The N includes a 150-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and 250-sheet cassette Tray 2. Both original tables support suitable Letter, Legal and A4 at 75 gsm, giving 400 standard ordinary sheets. The 500-sheet expansion feeder and automatic duplex accessory are optional for N and included on the documented DN/HDN variants. They are not added to this base plan. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to 10 at no more than 90 gsm. Configure its size/type, preferably Cassette mode, and load the back flap away from the printer according to the guide. Labels and heavier stock have different limits.
Scanning arrangement
This is a color laser printer rather than a multifunction machine. It does not include scanner, copier, fax, flatbed or original feeder hardware. Software-suite or network-management wording does not create a computer scan route.
Computer and mobile connections
The exact N includes an HP JetDirect EIO network print server. The compatible computer Ethernet arrangement requires its actual installed card, configured network address, supported driver and matching printer queue. The printer also has an original bidirectional parallel port requiring the correct C connector. No native USB or included Wi-Fi connection is established by this guide. Modern mobile protocols remain unestablished; a shared network alone does not demonstrate AirPrint or Mopria.
Supplies and declared yields
The original replacement table estimates 9000 black and 6000 pages for each color at 5% individual-color coverage on A4/Letter. This is not an ISO/IEC 19798 declaration or proof of initial/remaining toner. Drum life is separately estimated at 6250 color or 25000 black-only pages under a two-page-job basis; transfer and fuser kits have further distinct intervals. Mixing black and color changes maintenance life. Inspect actual cartridges and maintenance messages instead of assuming a full set in an earlier unit.
Software and support
Private Job printing is positively documented: the compatible driver supplies a four-digit PIN and the panel releases the matching user/job. However, the guide explicitly requires an installed hard disk and properly configured driver for every job-retention feature. The disk is optional on N and standard only on HDN in the model list. Included PIN release therefore fails for the standard N plan. Proof and hold, quick copy and a control-panel setting are distinct from an included confidential arrangement.
Electrical edition and setup
The exact US product is explicitly discontinued. Body measurements are unestablished in the sections read; allow front/rear consumable access and the guide's 102 mm side ventilation clearance. The guide separates 110 V editions rated 100–127 V at 50/60 Hz from 220–240 V editions. Confirm the actual N unit's rating and electrical edition; the family table is not a universal-voltage promise. Optional duplex, drawer or storage equipment needs physical verification.
