Color LaserJet 4600dnIllustrated overview
A useful fit for

A compatible legacy wired printing environment needing supported ordinary two-sided color documents.

The main tradeoff

Standard computer USB is not documented, private-job retention needs an optional disk and present software/electrical suitability need checking.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the documented dn print color Legal pages automatically on both sides over Ethernet with 600 supplied sheets?

Yes, with a compatible driver, complete dn package and supported ordinary 75–105 g/m² paper.

Does the standard configuration provide computer USB printing?

The documented original physical interface set does not include that route; an adapter is not assumed.

Is private-job PIN release included without the optional disk?

No. The original retention chapter requires an installed hard disk, optional on dn.

An earlier network printer with a specific connection set

The HP Color LaserJet 4600dn is a color print-only configuration with automatic two-sided output and an included Jetdirect 610n network card. Its original interface arrangement belongs to an earlier generation, so the intended connection and available software deserve attention before the general color-printing feature list.

The dn is separately identified in the original configuration guide. Do not import the larger feeder or disk from the related dtn and hdn, or assume that another HP family’s suffix rules describe this one. The actual package determines what the printer can do.

Ethernet is the assessed route; USB should not be assumed

The documented physical interface map lists parallel, EIO and the accessory infrared connection. It does not establish standard computer USB. The included dn network card provides the Ethernet print route used in this assessment; no conversion adapter is assumed.

That matters when a buyer expects to plug a familiar USB cable into any desktop printer. Check the actual ports and suitable driver before choosing an earlier machine. A parallel connector or expansion slot does not create the missing computer route.

The optional infrared receiver is another distinct arrangement. It requires compatible sending hardware and positioning, and should not be mistaken for infrastructure Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct. Modern mobile protocols are not established by that accessory description.

Automatic duplex applies to supported ordinary sheets

The dn includes automatic two-sided printing. The original media table explicitly supports Letter, Legal and A4 through that path within its stated 75–105 g/m² paper range. Custom sizes are excluded from automatic duplex even where a tray can accept them for single-sided output.

Choose the correct size, type and binding controls in compatible software. The guide distinguishes long-edge and short-edge binding, which affect how the finished document reads. A control-panel setting does not replace configuring the driver for the actual duplexer.

Labels, transparencies, cardstock and glossy film have different handling restrictions. They should not inherit ordinary-paper duplex support. Preprinted forms also use different loading orientations for two-sided work, making the correct face and leading edge part of the routine.

Six hundred supplied sheets, with expansion separate

The included ordinary inputs comprise 100 sheets in the multipurpose tray and 500 in the main cassette. That totals 600, with a further 500-sheet feeder optional on dn. Verify the actual third feeder if an earlier offer claims expanded input.

Letter, Legal and A4 ordinary stock are documented in the supplied inputs. Envelopes use the multipurpose tray, with a separate 20-envelope capacity and material rules. Neither the output bin nor the original guide’s specialty-media capacities should be added to the ordinary-sheet total.

Private-job retrieval needs the optional disk

The operating guide explicitly requires an installed hard disk for job retention. A configured driver is also necessary. The base dn package does not therefore qualify for an essential private-print PIN workflow merely because the family manual explains how to release such jobs.

Administrator access controls address a different concern. If an offer claims retained private jobs, inspect the installed disk and actual driver/retrieval process rather than treating a general security heading as sufficient. The hdn’s included disk is not part of the dn by default.

Evaluate a legacy installation as a whole

This is a dedicated printer, with no scanner, copier or fax. A paper feeder adds print stock rather than document capture. Confirm the software route that matters to your office, and do not substitute a maximum-duty number for an unverified recurring-workload recommendation.

Check condition, supplies, service access and the actual electrical plate. Separate regional voltage specifications are not a universal-input promise. The 4600dn can fit a compatible legacy Ethernet routine needing ordinary color duplex output, with its original connection and accessory limitations understood.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Original exact family output 17 Letter/16 A4 ppm. Exact recurring-volume and maximum-duty values are not established by the original sections read; no adjacent 4600 base retail or later 4610/4650 figure borrowed.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose plus 500-sheet main cassette total 600 ordinary sheets. The further 500-sheet third feeder is optional on dn. Letter/Legal/A4 ordinary input and automatic duplex are explicitly documented; duplex standard sizes only, 75–105 g/m², not custom sizes. Labels/transparencies/cardstock/glossy film excluded from automatic two-sided path. Envelopes use Tray 1 up to 20 under separate 105 g/m² maximum.

Scanning arrangement

Dedicated color printer without scanner, copying or fax. Paper-input feeder is not a scanner feeder.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact dn adds included Jetdirect 610n EIO network card to the automatic-duplex configuration. Standard physical interface map lists parallel, EIO and infrared accessory connection, not computer USB. Assessed modern questionnaire route is Ethernet; no adapter, wireless radio, AirPrint, Mopria or standard Wi-Fi Direct inferred. Optional infrared is not Wi-Fi.

Supplies and declared yields

Four toner colors and separate maintenance items require condition checks. No current price, remaining toner, unsupported yield or later-series cartridge substitute supplied. Inspect actual supplies and service history of an earlier offer.

Software and support

Use compatible driver configured for actual automatic duplex and paper settings. Original job-retention chapter explicitly requires installed hard disk and proper driver configuration. dn disk is optional, unlike hdn; base PIN release therefore false. Management access PIN is a separate feature. Current software/network compatibility needs checking against the old documented environment.

Electrical edition and setup

Earlier documented North American Letter-capable dn configuration; original n comparison explicitly Europe-only but dn is separately named. No invented regional suffix or adjacent base discontinued status. Separate 110-/220-volt editions require actual plate check; US mains unknown. The original body table says 4600 generically rather than exact dn assembly, so measured footprint/weight remain unknown instead of borrowing accessory-stack dimensions.
