Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a wired network computer print A3 color documents automatically on both sides with 600 ordinary sheets loaded?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the documented US edition. Use the included Fast Ethernet card and a compatible driver configured for the dn duplex unit, A3 size and supported 60–120-g/m² stock. The included 100- and 500-sheet inputs provide 600 ordinary sheets.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the standard dn include 1,100 sheets of Letter input for USB printing?
Fails. The dn includes 600 ordinary input sheets. Another 500-sheet cassette is optional; the dtn configuration and output bin are not part of the base dn reserve.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the included 160-MB USB configuration hold my document until I enter a PIN?
Fails for the base configuration. The detailed original requires at least 192 MB for Private Job. Verify the required upgrade and compatible driver separately; no extra memory or hard disk is assumed installed.

The HP Color LaserJet 5550dn is a dedicated color printer for a shared office that needs larger documents as well as everyday pages. Its documented configuration includes a 100-sheet multipurpose input, a 500-sheet cassette, automatic two-sided printing and an HP Jetdirect 620n Fast Ethernet card. It has no document scanner, copier, fax, glass or original feeder.
The exact US listing identifies Q3715A#ABA and marks it discontinued. This review covers the documented low-voltage US edition, rated at 110–127 V and 50/60 Hz. A separately listed 220–240-V model is not an alternative setting on the same supply. Check the actual unit's option code and electrical plate.
HP recommends 2,500–10,000 printed pages per month. Its 120,000-page maximum monthly duty figure serves a different purpose and should not become an everyday workload target. Declared one-sided speed is up to 27 black or color pages per minute for Letter and 28 for A4. Those figures do not establish duplex or large-sheet throughput.
Connect a compatible computer through the actual installed interface
The included network card is Fast Ethernet, not one of the optional Gigabit replacements shown in an accessory list. The rear computer USB port is USB 1.1. It needs an A-to-B cable and compatible printer software; a modern USB connector does not change the printer's own link speed.
A bidirectional IEEE-1284 parallel connection is another documented option for a computer with the appropriate port and cable. The printer end uses a C connector. USB and parallel cannot be used simultaneously, although the original supports network and parallel together. Jetlink is for third-party paper-handling devices and is not a general-purpose computer connection.
For a shared network, configure the Jetdirect card, identify the printer by its network configuration and use an appropriate exact-model driver. Keep the application, driver and tray settings consistent. HP's historical Windows and Macintosh software lists are not a guarantee of full support on a current operating system.
Included Wi-Fi is not documented; HP lists wireless hardware as optional. AirPrint and Mopria remain unconfirmed for the included arrangement. An old mobile-printing reference that requires a separate adapter does not make that accessory part of the dn configuration.
Use the full 600-sheet reserve only for suitable ordinary stock
The 100-sheet Tray 1 and 500-sheet Tray 2 total 600 ordinary input sheets. Their capacity tables use 75-g/m², 20-lb paper. Heavier or different stock has separate limits. The 250-sheet output bin is not another input, and optional lower cassettes are not included in this total. The dtn and hdn configurations have different paper reserves and should not be substituted.
Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and 11 × 17-inch Tabloid are positively documented. Letter and A4 can feed along either edge, with long-edge-first preferred for throughput. Short-edge-first is identified as the rotated size, such as LTR-R or A4-R. Select the actual orientation rather than treating these names as interchangeable driver settings.
For the main cassette, adjust the length and width guides, stay below the stack-height mark and verify the Standard/Custom setting. Accept or correct the size and type shown after closing the tray. For ordinary one-sided preprinted stock, HP specifies face up in Tray 2 and face down in Tray 1, with the page top to the left. Automatic duplex reverses the printable-face instruction: face down in Tray 2 and face up in Tray 1.
Automatic duplex still has size, weight and media limits
The original duplex table explicitly includes Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and 11 × 17 inches. Use supported 60–120-g/m² media and enable the duplex unit in the compatible driver. Choose the intended binding edge for the job. HP warns that automatic two-sided printing above the table's weight maximum can produce unexpected results, even if heavier stock can pass through the engine.
Transparencies, envelopes, cardstock, labels and the named tough-paper media are excluded from automatic duplex. If the driver enables both automatic and manual duplex, an unsupported automatic combination may switch to manual handling. That fallback is not unattended duplex support.
Envelopes use Tray 1 only, with up to 20 suitable envelopes at no more than 105 g/m². Load them printable face down, top to the left and short edge toward the printer, then bring the guides against the stack without bending it. Match the exact envelope size and source in the panel and driver. Print one side only and avoid windows, clasps, damage and unsuitable adhesives.
Do not assume the standard memory qualifies for PIN release
The included dn memory is 160 MB. The detailed job-storage section requires at least 192 MB for Private Job and Proof and Hold. The unupgraded configuration therefore does not qualify for PIN printing in the finder.
Where the required upgraded configuration and compatible driver are actually present, Private Job uses a four-digit PIN and a named job, released through Retrieve Job at the panel. The detailed procedure allows storage in RAM or on a hard drive; it does not make an added disk the only possible private-job route. Quick Copy and permanently stored jobs have their own optional-disk requirement. Verify the actual configuration rather than inferring it from the dn suffix.
Check all four supplies and the installed footprint
The original replacements are C9730A black, C9731A cyan, C9732A yellow and C9733A magenta. HP's US brochure rates black at approximately 13,000 pages and each color at approximately 12,000 under a five-percent-average-coverage basis. These are not ISO/IEC 19798 yields or a promise about toner remaining in an earlier unit.
The later US brochure lists 25.2 inches of height and 114 lb for the n/dn body, without specifying the cartridge-weight basis. Width and depth remain unconfirmed here because the brochure's axis label conflicts with the family guide, whose exact dn row also includes an optional tray and stand. Measure the actual assembly and allow working access for the multipurpose tray, cassettes, front supplies and cables before committing to its location.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original exact dn scope rates black and color one-sided printing at up to 27 ppm for Letter and 28 ppm for A4. No automatic-duplex, A3 or Tabloid throughput is inferred. Recommended monthly volume is 2,500–10,000 pages, distinct from the 120,000-page maximum duty.
Paper handling
Included Tray 1 holds 100 and Tray 2 holds 500 ordinary sheets, with capacity based on 75-g/m², 20-lb paper. Optional lower trays and the 250-sheet output bin are excluded. Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and 11 × 17-inch Tabloid are positive in the original paper/duplex tables. Letter/A4 prefer long-edge feed; rotated names indicate short-edge feed. Adjust cassette guides, respect height marks and verify Standard/Custom and actual panel/driver size/type. One-sided preprinted stock is face up in Tray 2 and face down in Tray 1, top to the left; automatic duplex reverses the face instruction. Automatic duplex uses supported 60–120-g/m² media, not envelopes, labels, cardstock, transparencies or tough paper. Heavier engine passage does not guarantee duplex results. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to 20 at no more than 105 g/m², printable face down/top left/short edge first in a one-sided job.
Scanning arrangement
The complete original exact dn scope and hardware identify a dedicated color printer. There is no scanner, copier, fax, glass or document feeder. An optional paper feeder adds print stock, not document capture. No connection provides a computer scan route.
Computer and mobile connections
Included interfaces are USB 1.1 computer, bidirectional IEEE-1284-C parallel and the HP Jetdirect 620n Fast Ethernet EIO card. Optional Gigabit or wireless accessories are not included. USB needs an A-to-B cable and compatible software; parallel needs a suitable computer port and C connector at the printer. USB and parallel cannot be used simultaneously; network and parallel may coexist. Jetlink serves paper-handling input devices, not a general computer port. AirPrint and Mopria remain unconfirmed, and optional mobile adapters are not counted as built in.
Supplies and declared yields
The original four replacements are C9730A black, C9731A cyan, C9732A yellow and C9733A magenta. HP US brochure declares approximately 13,000 black or 12,000 pages for each color on a five-percent-average-coverage basis. No ISO/IEC 19798 method, remaining toner or hands-on yield is inferred. The image transfer and voltage-specific fuser kits are separate maintenance parts. No mandatory lifetime HP+ policy or current price is invented.
Software and support
Use a compatible exact-model print driver with the actual installed duplex unit configured, correct size/type and chosen binding edge. Historical operating-system lists are not present-day guarantees. The included dn memory is 160 MB. Detailed original job-storage instructions require at least 192 MB for Private Job/Proof and Hold, so the base plan has no secure PIN qualification. With a verified upgraded configuration, Private Job can use RAM or a disk and requires a four-digit PIN for panel release. Quick Copy and permanently stored jobs separately require an optional disk. No optional memory or disk is assumed installed.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact US Q3715A#ABA is explicitly discontinued and requires earlier opt-in. This review covers the documented 110–127-V, 50/60-Hz edition; the separate 220–240-V model is not a universal setting. Check the actual option code and plate. Later US brochure n/dn height is 25.2 inches and weight 114 lb, with cartridge basis unspecified. Width/depth are left unknown because the brochure labels the axes differently from the family guide. The original exact dn body row includes optional Tray 3 and stand; its 246-lb/32.8-inch figures are not assigned to the base dn. Measure the actual assembly and allow tray, front supply, output and cable access.
