A useful fit for

A compatible wired document desk using 1,000–2,500 recommended monthly pages and wanting 550 ordinary input sheets, Legal feeder originals and documented automatic print duplex.

The main tradeoff

The taller fxi needs space for its included third tray. Computer duplex scanning, single-pass capture and mobile print protocols remain unconfirmed; Legal scanning uses the feeder, and fax needs telephone service.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can a compatible wired-network desk print Legal color documents automatically on both sides, scan one-sided Legal originals, copy and fax with 550 ordinary sheets loaded?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the documented US package. The included third cassette contributes to 550 sheets, Legal originals use the feeder, and fax additionally requires suitable telephone service. Verify full computer scan software or the specifically configured SMTP delivery route.

Does automatic two-sided copying guarantee automatic two-sided scanning to my USB computer?

Does not qualify for the selected duplex scan essential. The fxi copy menu positively supports 2-sided to 2-sided copying, but the reviewed computer scan instructions do not establish automatic duplex file delivery. That capability remains unknown rather than being borrowed from copying.

Can I scan a complete Legal original on the glass while using Ethernet?

Fails the Legal flatbed requirement. The glass supports Letter/A4; original instructions explicitly require Legal documents to use the feeder. The network connection does not enlarge the glass.

The fxi package includes the third paper tray

The HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi is the earlier CC435A configuration with color printing, scanning, copying, analog fax and photo memory-card slots. Its package also includes a second 250-sheet cassette beneath the main 250-sheet tray. Together with the 50-sheet multipurpose input, that gives it 550 ordinary input sheets without buying an expansion tray.

That distinction matters when comparing the family. The third tray is optional on the n and nf versions, while the fxi includes it. HP's exact US page identifies CC435A#ABA and explicitly marks it discontinued. This review covers the documented US low-voltage edition; confirm the actual rating plate rather than treating separately listed high-voltage configurations as interchangeable.

The fxi is worth considering for an established wired desk with compatible software, enough physical space and a need for a larger included paper reserve. It requires careful separation of automatic print duplex, automatic copying and computer scanning features.

Give the full configuration enough room

The exact US brochure's fxi column lists a body approximately 19.6 inches wide, 19.4 deep and 25.6 high, weighing 76.9 lb including print cartridges. These figures describe the taller configuration with its included third tray. The generic user manual gives a shorter height and lower weight for its memory-card model; this review uses the later exact fxi brochure column and retains that source difference.

Legal paper adds another space requirement. The main cassette extends approximately 64 mm, or 2.5 inches, beyond the front when loaded for Legal. Reserve access to the paper inputs, front cartridge drawer, output area, scanner lid and rear connections, rather than measuring only the closed body.

The original capacity instructions use 75-g/m², 20-lb stock for the 50-sheet multipurpose tray and each 250-sheet cassette. Heavier stock reduces the usable stack. Load face up, adjust the guides against the paper, keep the corners flat and stay below the tray's limit tabs.

Automatic print duplex is a separate job setting

Letter, Legal and A4 have positive support marks in all three paper inputs. The A3 row is unmarked and the stated maximum width is 216 mm, so the appearance of A3 in the table is not support.

For the documented Windows automatic two-sided routine, select Print on both sides in Finishing. The US brochure explicitly lists Letter and Legal for the automatic duplexer. A4 printing is confirmed, while A4 automatic duplex remains unconfirmed in this review's selected size list. The original duplex instructions specify suitable paper from 60 to 163 g/m².

Use envelopes as a separate one-sided job with the actual driver size and media type. Laser-compatible construction matters: avoid clasps, windows, damaged envelopes and adhesives unsuitable for fuser heat. The original envelope-capacity passages disagree, so this review does not turn either larger number into a promised envelope stack.

Choose the feeder or glass before starting capture

The scanner glass handles Letter and A4. For Legal documents, the original scanning instructions explicitly require the automatic document feeder. The feeder holds up to 50 originals; its capacity note states 80-g/m² or 20-lb media, independently of the blank-paper input specification.

Place feeder originals face up, top edge first, with the first page on top. Extend the feeder support for pages longer than Letter or A4 and adjust its guides snugly. Use the glass for photographs, fragile pages and small originals, and remove staples, clips or correction material before feeding ordinary documents.

Automatic two-sided copying is documented for the fxi memory-card model. Copy Menu, Options and Copy 2-sided provide a 2-sided to 2-sided choice, followed by Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color. This confirms that particular copying routine. The reviewed computer-scan instructions do not establish automatic duplex delivery through HP LaserJet Scan or HP Director, so that route and single-pass scanning remain unconfirmed.

Computer scanning and standalone email have different dependencies

USB 2.0 and built-in 10/100 Ethernet are the computer interfaces. For USB, connect the A-to-B cable when the installer asks. For Ethernet, connect the network cable, print a configuration page and install the device at its reported IP address. The exact configuration has no built-in Wi-Fi.

Compatible HP LaserJet Scan on Windows, HP Director on Mac, and the documented TWAIN or WIA software provide computer capture. Historical operating-system lists do not guarantee support on a current machine. Panel Scan To destinations also require a full software installation, HP ToolboxFX running and the target computer switched on; program those destinations before using Select Computer.

The fxi separately supports standalone scan to email through a configured SMTP gateway. Set the gateway, port and related network information, then choose Send an E-mail from Scan Menu. That is server-mediated email delivery, not a promise that plugging in USB creates standalone email. Check that the intended mail service accepts the printer's documented arrangement.

The memory-card scanning routine saves a separate JPEG for each page, with one-page flatbed capture and feeder capture selected when originals are loaded. Neither photo slots nor Bonjour discovery establish AirPrint, Mopria or secure PIN release for print jobs; those capabilities remain unconfirmed.

Match supplies and workload to the exact machine

Cartridges are CC530A black, CC531A cyan, CC532A yellow and CC533A magenta. HP declares average continuous replacement yields of 3,500 black pages and 2,800 composite color pages under ISO/IEC 19798, separately from the introductory 1,200-page declarations. Remaining toner in a particular earlier unit is unknown. Use the front cartridge drawer and avoid touching the imaging drum.

Fax requires an appropriate telephone arrangement; HP recommends a dedicated analog line. A USB or Ethernet connection alone does not provide that service. Incoming private-fax protection is separate from held computer-print PIN release.

The later US brochure rates black and color Letter output up to 21 ppm, superseding the older manual's 20-ppm declaration for this review. Recommended volume is 1,000–2,500 monthly pages, distinct from the 40,000-page maximum duty. These are maker declarations, not measured performance or duplex throughput.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

The later exact US brochure explicitly declares up to 21 one-sided Letter ppm in black and color, agreeing with current US nominal speed. The older original manual says 20 Letter/19 A4; that version difference is retained rather than silently combined. Recommended monthly volume is 1,000–2,500 pages versus maximum duty of 40,000. No measured performance, scan-rate substitution or duplex throughput is claimed.

Paper handling

Exact fxi includes Tray 1 with 50 ordinary sheets plus two 250-sheet cassettes, totaling 550 sheets; the third cassette is optional only on n/nf. The original loading sections specify 75-g/m², 20-lb ordinary stock, with lower capacity for heavier stock and condition caveats. Letter, Legal and A4 are positively marked in all inputs; A3 is unmarked and excluded. The US automatic duplexer size list explicitly confirms Letter and Legal, while A4 automatic duplex remains unconfirmed. Original automatic duplex weight is 60–163 g/m². Load face up, set guides and keep below tabs. Legal cassette extension adds about 64 mm or 2.5 inches at the front. Original top-edge wording differs between capacity and loading passages, so no universal form orientation is promised. Envelope stack capacities also conflict; use actual type/size in a suitable one-sided job without a larger promised envelope count.

Scanning arrangement

Color capture is independently documented from Letter/A4 glass and the 50-page feeder. Legal originals require the feeder, not glass. Feeder capacity note is 80-g/m² or 20-lb originals, distinct from 75-g blank input. Load originals face up/top first and extend support for longer pages. Use glass for fragile/small/photo originals. Exact fxi supports automatic 2-sided-to-2-sided copying, but the reviewed HP LaserJet Scan/Director and standalone email sections do not establish automatic duplex computer-file delivery or physical single-pass method. Those scan essentials remain unknown, and no automatic duplex computer route is borrowed from the copy menu.

Computer and mobile connections

Exact configuration has rear USB 2.0 and built-in 10/100 Ethernet, with no included Wi-Fi. USB uses an A-to-B cable when prompted; network installation uses an actual configuration-page IP. Compatible HP LaserJet Scan/Director or TWAIN/WIA supports computer scanning over the documented installed arrangement. Panel Scan To needs full software, HP ToolboxFX running, a powered computer and programmed destinations. The separate standalone email route uses Ethernet and a working configured SMTP gateway/port; email delivery is explicit and is not USB pull scanning. Bonjour is discovery, not proof of AirPrint. AirPrint and Mopria remain unknown.

Supplies and declared yields

Original parts and later US brochure specify CC530A black, CC531A cyan, CC532A yellow and CC533A magenta. Replacement declarations are 3,500 black and 2,800 composite color pages under ISO/IEC 19798 continuous conditions; introductory black and composite color are separately 1,200 pages. Remaining toner is unknown. Front drawer replacement requires access and avoidance of the imaging drum. Original authentication/recommendation does not establish a newer HP+ lifetime requirement. The brochure calls cartridge and drum one integrated supply, not a separate scanner or multifunction feature.

Software and support

Verify exact required software on the intended computer; historical Windows/Mac lists are not current compatibility guarantees. HP LaserJet Scan offers computer destinations and settings; HP Director saves scans on Mac. Panel folders/email shortcuts differ from standalone SMTP email and require their stated setup. Readiris OCR is a separate installation, not built into every scan. Scan to memory card saves one JPEG per scanned page, uses loaded ADF originals first and supports one page from the glass. Secure held-print PIN release remains unconfirmed; color lockout, web passwords and private incoming fax do not prove it.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact HP US CC435A#ABA is explicitly discontinued and requires earlier opt-in. Review is limited to the documented US low-voltage configuration; current US lists 110–127 V at 60 Hz, while original low-voltage column is 100–127 V at 60 Hz. Separate 220–240-V editions are not interchangeable; actual option code and plate control. The later exact US fxi brochure gives 19.6 W × 19.4 D × 25.6 H inches and 76.9 lb including cartridges, preferred over the generic manual memory-card row at 21.0 inches high/68.5 lb. Allow included third tray, Legal front projection, scanner lid, cartridge drawer, output and cables. Fax needs an appropriate telephone service in addition to computer USB/Ethernet; the original recommends a dedicated analog line.
