A useful fit for

A configured Ethernet office using compatible print drivers and SMTP email or an accessible shared folder to deliver color scans, with a separate dedicated analog fax line.

The main tradeoff

USB does not supply the network scan-to functions. Included Legal print capacity is 100 sheets, Wi-Fi is optional, and automatic feeder duplex does not establish a single-pass scanner.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an Ethernet office setup automatically duplex Legal prints, scan both sides of Legal originals in color and fax with PIN release and 100 included Legal sheets?

Qualifies with earlier references enabled, a compatible PIN-capable print driver, actual Ethernet, a configured compatible SMTP gateway or administrator-enabled accessible network folder, and a separately configured dedicated analog fax line. Legal print stock uses Tray 1. Automatic duplex scanning is documented; single-pass operation is not established.

Can I scan documents to the computer by connecting only a USB printer cable?

Fails the computer-scan requirement. HP explicitly requires a network connection for the documented email and folder scan-to functions. The USB plan provides compatible computer printing, with standalone copy and separate analog fax.

Is the CM3530fs verified for single-pass duplex scanning with 350 included Legal print sheets?

Fails both selected requirements: the reviewed sources establish automatic two-sided scanning without proving a single-pass mechanism, and included Legal input is only 100 sheets in Tray 1. The 350 total applies to ordinary Letter/A4 stock across both inputs.

A network document station with useful fs-specific hardware

The HP Color LaserJet CM3530fs is an earlier color multifunction laser for a managed office network, automatic two-sided documents and analog fax. The exact fs configuration includes the fax accessory and a convenience stapler. Its scanner can deliver color files through configured email or network-folder services; plugging a computer into USB does not establish those scan-to functions.

HP's US page identifies CC520A#B1H and explicitly marks it discontinued. This review covers the documented US low-voltage configuration, whose original brochure states 115–127 V at 50/60 Hz. A separate 220–240-V edition is not interchangeable. Inspect the actual electrical plate, installed accessories, disk condition and software before choosing an earlier unit.

Legal paper has a smaller included reserve

The included inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose Tray 1 and 250-sheet Tray 2. They total 350 ordinary Letter or A4 sheets when both contain the selected size. Legal does not fit Tray 2: its included reserve is only the 100 sheets in Tray 1. The 50-sheet scanner feeder and 250-sheet output bin do not increase blank-paper capacity.

The optional 500-sheet Tray 3 can expand the physical configuration to 850 sheets, but it is an additional purchase. Do not treat that maximum as included or assume its full total applies to every size. Tray 2's stated 250-sheet basis is 75-g/m² paper; heavier stock reduces its count.

For ordinary Tray 1 loading, extend the support, put paper face down with its short top edge entering first, and keep the stack below the guide tabs and load indicators. Tray 2 loads face up with guides lightly touching the paper. Do not open a tray during use or add and remove multipurpose paper while printing.

Preprinted forms need the detailed orientation table for the selected tray, one-sided or duplex mode and Alternative Letterhead Mode. With that setting off, portrait duplex forms go face up and bottom first in Tray 1, but face down with their top edge at the left in Tray 2. Envelopes and labels belong in Tray 1. Suitable envelopes load face down; the exact edge depends on whether their long or short edge enters first.

Automatic print duplex is separate from automatic scanning

Automatic two-sided printing is standard. The US original explicitly lists Letter and Legal for the duplex unit; HP's exact regional specification also confirms A4. Choose the correct ordinary paper, size and driver settings. In the Windows driver, Finishing offers Print on both sides and binding options. The original Mac driver uses Layout and Two-Sided binding.

The 50-sheet feeder also has automatic two-sided scanning, a separate capability. The original documents automatic duplex processing but does not establish a single-pass method in these sections. It should qualify for ordinary automatic duplex scans without being presented as a proven single-pass scanner.

Load feeder originals face up, first page and top edge leading. Use suitable loose sheets within the documented 60–105-g/m² range. The original explicitly supports Letter, Legal and A4 originals, including the email screen's original-size and original-sides settings. Small, worn, irregular or delicate originals and photographs use the glass instead.

This model has a genuine Legal-size flatbed, independently identified in the exact fs brochure. Place the original face down at the upper-left glass corner. That support is established for the glass itself, not borrowed from its Legal feeder limit.

Set up the destination before expecting a computer scan

For email delivery, connect Ethernet to a functioning local network and configure a compatible SMTP gateway. The original requires that mail server to have Internet access. Administration, Initial Setup and E-mail Setup provide the wizard, gateway address and test. LDAP can help address lookup but is not required for sending email.

At the panel, choose E-mail, provide any required login and recipient fields, then open More Options for original size, sides, color and file type. Start sends the scanned attachment. Receiving that file on a computer satisfies a document-delivery workflow, but it is not a USB pull scan.

For folder delivery, the administrator enables Send to Folder in the embedded web server and uses the documented Scan Setup Wizard to create the connected destination. Check actual folder access and present-day server compatibility. Optional Digital Sending Software adds other workflow services; it is not needed to claim the standard embedded email and folder features.

Wi-Fi requires an optional hardware accessory and is excluded from the included setup. AirPrint and Mopria are unverified here. The external host USB port serves third-party solutions; it should not be mistaken for an independently established walk-up storage scanner.

Use PIN release and the stapler for their actual jobs

The included hard disk supports real private computer jobs. In Job Storage, select Personal Job and enter a four-digit PIN. At the panel, retrieve the named job, enter its PIN and request the copies. A Stored Job can also use PIN to print. The original warns that turning off deletes Personal, Quick Copy and Proof and Hold jobs; it does not establish a universal deletion-after-print rule.

The convenience stapler is manually fed, not an automatic output finisher. Insert up to 20 sheets at 80 g/m² and wait for it to trigger; heavier paper lowers that limit. Its cassette holds 1,500 staples. The included fax accessory separately needs a configured dedicated analog telephone line, not a network cable or an assumed digital PBX connection.

Inspect supplies and working clearance

HP recommends 2,000–6,000 monthly pages versus a 75,000-page maximum duty. Rated one-sided speed is up to 31 Letter ppm in black or color, separately 30 on A4. Replacement cartridges are CE250A/CE250X black and CE251A, CE252A and CE253A colors. HP's ISO/IEC 19798 composite averages are 5,000 or 10,500 black pages and 7,000 per color; they do not establish remaining toner or real-document cost.

The CE254A toner collection unit is single use and should be replaced when prompted rather than emptied for reuse. Allow roughly 21.4 inches of body width, 20.4 depth and 22.1 height. Fully opened doors, trays and document feeder need a much larger envelope, about 34.3 by 32.2 by 32.9 inches, plus sensible cable and service access.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US original brochure declares black and color up to 31 one-sided Letter ppm; original and exact HP product specification separately state 30 A4 ppm. Original relative duplex speeds are not converted into invented ipm figures. Recommended 2,000–6,000 monthly pages differs from 75,000 maximum duty. No measured quality, speed or reliability result.

Paper handling

Included Tray 1 holds 100 sheets and Tray 2 holds 250, totaling 350 ordinary Letter/A4 sheets when both contain that stock. Actual size-table marks and exact US brochure exclude Legal from Tray 2; Legal included capacity is 100 in Tray 1. Optional 500-sheet Tray 3/850 maximum is excluded from standard counts. The 50-sheet original feeder and 250-sheet output are separate. Tray 2 capacity is at 75 g/m² and falls with heavier stock. Tray 1 ordinary paper loads face down/short top edge first, below guide tabs and load marks; Tray 2 ordinary paper loads face up with guides lightly touching. For preprinted portrait duplex with Alternative Letterhead Mode off, detailed table requires Tray 1 face up/bottom first or Tray 2 face down/top at left. General Mac automatic-duplex paragraph differs from the detailed preprinted orientation table, so it is not substituted for that table. Suitable envelopes and labels use Tray 1; envelopes face down with exact leading edge dependent on long-edge/short-edge feed. Letter/Legal automatic duplex is explicit in US original and A4 explicit in exact regional maker specification; ordinary stock and actual driver settings are required.

Scanning arrangement

Color flatbed and 50-sheet ADF are independently documented. Exact US brochure calls the fs glass Legal-size; original printed153 explicitly names Letter/Legal/A4 for both glass and feeder, not merely a generic ADF dimension. Glass loads face down/upper-left; ordinary feeder originals face up, first page/top edge entering, with 60–105-g/m² range. Fragile, small, worn, irregular originals and photos use glass. Original automatic-duplex feeder and actual two-sided copy/email Original Sides steps positively establish automatic duplex scanning, but the physical reversing versus single-pass method is unestablished here. Use adf_duplex_unspecified, never singlepass. Actual email Original Size lists Letter/A4/Legal with independently selectable original sides and color. Network scan delivery is configured SMTP email or an administrator-enabled connected folder. Computer USB does not support the documented scan-to functions.

Computer and mobile connections

Included Ethernet network and USB 2.0 computer print connection. Original 2008 manual calls Ethernet 10/100Base-TX; later exact US March2009 brochure calls included Gigabit. Both establish Ethernet, but link rate/version must be checked on the actual formatter and is not promised in a plan. Actual maker USB scan-to exclusion requires network JDI/EIO connection for email/folder delivery. Ethernet SMTP plan requires compatible gateway/mail-server Internet access and actual recipient access on a computer. Folder plan requires administrator configuration, connected shared folder/access and compatible actual server. USB print plan does not borrow either network scan route. Wi-Fi accessory is optional, not standard; no included direct or mobile route. Host USB for third-party solutions differs from computer device USB and does not establish USB-storage scanning. Actual USB/network cables must be supplied for the chosen connection.

Supplies and declared yields

Actual US original brochure and manual parts identify CE250A standard black, CE250X high-capacity black, CE251A cyan, CE252A yellow, CE253A magenta and CE254A toner collection unit. Declared continuous composite ISO/IEC19798 averages are 5,000/10,500 black and 7,000 per color; original supplied full-capacity black/color declarations are not installed remainder or guaranteed actual yield. Toner collection unit is single use; replace when prompted, do not empty for reuse. Q7432A staple refill and separate voltage-specific fuser kits must match the actual configuration. No price, remaining toner, universal third-party supply compatibility or borrowed HP+ lifetime requirement.

Software and support

Included hard disk plus actual Personal Job/PIN procedure establishes secure computer PIN release with compatible driver over the selected USB or Ethernet print route. Windows Job Storage Personal Job takes a four-digit PIN; panel Job Storage/Retrieve selects the named job, PIN and copies. Stored Job may also be PIN protected. Turning off deletes Personal, Quick Copy and Proof and Hold jobs; no universal deletion-after-print claim. Same names can overwrite jobs and space pressure can remove older jobs. SMTP settings use Administration/Initial Setup/E-mail Setup and Test Send Gateways; LDAP is optional for email. Folder delivery uses EWS Digital Sending/Send to Folder plus Scan Setup Wizard. Optional DSS is separate from embedded email/folder capability. Old OS/protocol lists do not establish present-day software/server compatibility. AirPrint and Mopria remain unknown.

Electrical edition and setup

Exact US CC520A#B1H is explicitly discontinued; earlier-reference opt-in is required. The exact 2009 US brochure and exact support specify 115–127 V at 50/60 Hz; the later series electrical page says 100–127 V. Both support the documented US 120-V arrangement without an interchangeable high-voltage edition. Check the actual plate and do not convert voltage. The fs body measurements of 543 mm/21.4 inches width, 519 mm/20.4 inches depth and 560.5 mm/22.1 inches height agree within rounding. Original weight 97.1 lb with cartridges versus later 106.6 lb/48.4 kg remains unresolved, so weight is unknown. The original fully opened envelope is 870.5×819×835 mm or 34.3×32.2×32.9 inches. The included fs analog fax accessory requires a configured dedicated analog line rather than a digital PBX or Ethernet port. Its manual convenience stapler takes 20 sheets at 80 g/m², fewer with heavier stock; it is not automatic finishing. Inspect the actual configuration, disk, condition and current compatible software; no stock or condition guarantee.
