Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can CM6040f combine Legal automatic print duplex, automatic two-sided color feeder scans and fax on Ethernet?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled, compatible print driver, configured working SMTP email or network-folder scan delivery and a separate suitable dedicated analog fax line. Automatic feeder duplex is confirmed; single-pass is not promised.
Explore this need in the finder →Does a USB computer cable provide CM6040f scan delivery as well as color printing and copying?
Fails the selected scan essential. HP explicitly requires a network connection for this series Send to Email/Folder; USB printing and local paper copying do not provide a computer scan route.
Explore this need in the finder →Can CM6040f provide PIN-held A3 automatic-duplex computer printing at 15,000 monthly pages?
Qualifies over the included Ethernet route with a compatible Job Storage driver and four-digit PIN, within the documented recommended monthly maximum. Capacity is not selected because the two exact source configurations conflict.
Explore this need in the finder →CM6040f is a floor-standing color document system
The HP Color LaserJet CM6040f combines color laser printing, copying, color scanning and an included analog fax accessory. It is an earlier office machine, documented in HP's 2008 launch material and later original user guide. This review covers the US model identity and its documented 115–127-volt, 60-Hz arrangement, rather than treating the separate 220–240-volt version as interchangeable.
Its strongest supported arrangement is a configured wired office network. The machine can print automatically on both sides, scan two-sided originals through a 50-sheet document feeder, and deliver scans through network services. Each function still has its own setup: an Ethernet cable does not configure an email server, and a duplex printer does not establish single-pass scanning.
Confirm the actual paper cabinet before relying on capacity
HP's original model comparison gives CM6040f a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and four 500-sheet input trays. The current exact-model US support page instead lists the multipurpose tray, a 500-sheet tray and one 500-sheet tray/stand. Those descriptions imply different totals. We retain that conflict and do not assign an unconditional included-capacity figure.
Ask for a configuration page and photographs showing the actual paper cabinet. The original per-tray table positively supports Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and 11-by-17-inch Tabloid in the main documented feeds. Trays 3–5 accept some larger media than Tray 2. Their 500-sheet rating uses 75 g/m² paper and a stack-height limit; a heavier stock does not retain the same sheet count.
The automatic print duplex range is separately documented as 175–320 mm by 210–457 mm, with 60–220 g/m² supported media. Letter, Legal, A4, A3 and Tabloid fall within that range in the instructed orientation. Select the correct size and type in the compatible driver. Envelopes follow the one-sided Tray 1 routine, with up to ten supported envelopes and the specified feed orientation; they are not added to the duplex claim.
Network scanning and USB printing are different workflows
The included USB 2.0 device port serves a directly connected computer. The embedded Jetdirect Ethernet interface provides the shared network route. HP separately states that this series' Send to Email and Send to Folder functions are not supported through the computer USB connection.
For emailed scans, an administrator must configure a compatible reachable SMTP gateway, test it and verify that the intended recipient receives a scan attachment. Folder delivery requires an enabled, compatible network destination and any required credentials. The old guide's list of operating systems does not establish that an unmodified current server will accept the machine's protocols. Test the actual destination before depending on it.
The guide confirms Letter and A4 on the scanner glass, and additionally Legal through the feeder. It documents automatic two-sided feeder scanning and two-sided-original controls. The physical reversing or single-pass method was not established in the sources read, so this review confirms automatic duplex scanning without promising both sides are captured in one pass. Legal feeder acceptance is not extended to the glass.
CM6040f includes Analog Fax Accessory 300. HP requires a suitably configured dedicated analog telephone line and warns about incompatible digital PBX connections. Optional Digital Sending Software services are separate. The optional stapler/stacker and booklet maker are also separate accessories; a photograph showing one does not make it standard.
Plan supplies, security and installation as an office job
The guide rates CM6040 output up to 40 Letter pages per minute and recommends a maximum of 15,000 pages monthly. The current model's separate 200,000-page maximum duty cycle is not the recurring recommendation. Scanner rates, automatic duplex throughput and our own measured performance are not substituted for the print rating.
Its two-part supplies system uses four toner cartridges and four imaging drums. The original guide identifies CB390A black toner, CB381A cyan, CB382A yellow and CB383A magenta; its stated yields use 5% coverage. Those declarations do not establish installed remaining toner, drum condition or present operating cost. Inspect all supplies and maintenance information.
Compatible computer drivers can send a Personal Job with a four-digit PIN for release at the control panel. A Personal Job without a PIN is not private; released personal jobs are deleted. No AirPrint or Mopria arrangement is established here. Wireless print hardware is optional.
The original guide and current support records also disagree on depth, height and the weight's cartridge basis. Obtain actual measurements, service clearance and a suitable moving plan. This is a substantial floor-standing system whose documented functions can suit a maintained office installation, provided its network services, paper cabinet, electrical label and consumables are verified.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
Original CM6040 guide: up to 40 Letter print pages/minute and recommended monthly maximum 15,000. Separate current exact-model duty 200,000 is not the recommendation. No independently established color-specific Letter print rate is assigned; the current 40 ppm b&w/color field is scan speed.
Paper handling
Original CM6040f model row gives 100 + four 500-sheet feeds (2,100), while current exact US page lists 100 + 500 + one 500-sheet tray/stand (1,100). Included total remains unknown pending actual cabinet verification. Actual per-tray table supports Letter/Legal/A4/A3/Tabloid; 500-sheet trays use 75 g/m² and height limit. Auto duplex 175–320 × 210–457 mm, 60–220 g/m². Envelopes only instructed one-sided Tray 1, up to ten.
Scanning arrangement
Color scans through configured Ethernet SMTP email or compatible credentialed network folder. Glass positively Letter/A4; feeder additionally Legal. Automatic duplex feeder established, exact reversing/single-pass method unknown. No USB-computer scan-to-email/folder route. No Legal glass claim.
Computer and mobile connections
Standard USB 2.0 computer print or included Jetdirect Ethernet. Original guide says 10/100Base-TX; current exact technical source elsewhere says Gigabit, so no numeric Ethernet speed promise. Network scans require working configured SMTP gateway/email recipient or enabled compatible network folder; not native USB pull scanning. Fax separately needs a suitable dedicated configured analog line. No standard wireless or documented AirPrint/Mopria route.
Supplies and declared yields
HP original guide CB390A black 19,500; CB381A cyan/CB382A yellow/CB383A magenta each 21,000, stated at 5% coverage rather than an invented ISO declaration. Separate CB384A–CB387A imaging drums, guide 35,000 at 5%. Remaining supplies and current costs unknown.
Software and support
Compatible computer Job Storage driver supports Personal Job with optional four-digit PIN; use a PIN for privacy and release at panel. Personal jobs deleted after release and on power off. Network login/PIN authentication is a different function. Old OS list is not a current driver/protocol guarantee; test actual network services.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact original US model 3656581 independently identified; no unverified SKU suffix claimed. Current exact US electrical row 115–127 VAC 60 Hz intersects guide 100–127 VAC 50/60; separate 220–240 V edition. Original guide width 27.7 in agrees current exact US. Other body measures conflict: guide 25 D/47 H/319 lb without cartridge, current exact 26.5 D/47.9 H; generic specification labels same 145 kg with cartridge. Depth/height/weight left unknown. Optional finishing units need extra room.
