Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can a compatible network computer print color Legal documents with 150 ordinary sheets loaded?
Qualifies with earlier references enabled and the documented US edition. Use built-in 10/100 Ethernet, a compatible driver and ordinary Legal stock; extend the tray and reserve its additional two inches of front space.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I get automatic two-sided A4 color output through USB?
Fails. Both sides require the compatible manual-duplex driver routine, removal of unused stock, return of the printed stack face down with its top at the back and a press of Resume.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the ni photo ports scan and copy my Letter documents?
Fails. They print existing JPEG or compatible-camera images. The CP1518ni has no document scanner, glass, feeder or copier, and neither computer connection adds capture hardware.
Explore this need in the finder →The ni model adds photo inputs to a wired color printer
The HP Color LaserJet CP1518ni combines color document printing, a 150-sheet main tray and built-in wired networking. Its distinguishing photo features are memory-card slots and a PictBridge camera connection. These provide ways to print existing images without a computer; they do not make it a scanner or copier.
The exact US listing identifies CC378A#ABA and marks it discontinued. This review covers that earlier US configuration, with the documented 110–127-V, 60-Hz supply. Confirm the actual unit's option code and rating plate. The original manual separately lists high-voltage editions and warns against converting operating voltages.
Consider it for a small shared desk that can accommodate manual paper handling and still has compatible printer software. HP recommends 250–1,000 monthly pages. The 30,000-page maximum monthly duty figure is a separate ceiling, not the recommended workload.
Plan around USB or 10/100 Ethernet
The original product description and rear hardware map show a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 computer port and built-in 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet. The printer can connect directly to the local network so computers print to it individually. This review follows that original interface evidence. A current support entry that lists Gigabit Ethernet and two EIO slots conflicts with the original and is not adopted.
For USB, the guide specifies an A-to-B cable and says to connect it when the software installer requests it. For a network setup, connect the network cable, print a configuration page and identify the printer by its hardware or IP address during installation. The control panel and embedded web server provide IP configuration controls.
These are historical software instructions, not a guarantee of driver compatibility on a current computer. Check the required print driver and manual-duplex controls before choosing an earlier unit. The built-in network interface does not establish Wi-Fi, AirPrint, Mopria or held-job PIN release. Those mobile and secure-release capabilities remain unconfirmed here.
Keep ordinary input capacity separate from the priority slot
Tray 2 holds up to 150 sheets of ordinary 75-g/m², 20-lb bond paper. Capacity varies with paper weight, thickness and conditions. Tray 1 is a single-sheet priority slot, useful for an occasional different sheet; it is not another stack-sized paper reserve. The finder therefore uses 150 ordinary input sheets. The 125-sheet output bin is separate again.
Letter, Legal and A4 have positive support marks for both inputs in the original table. The A3 and B4 rows have no marks, and the maximum stated width is 216 mm. Merely appearing as a row in a shared media table does not establish support.
Load normal Tray 2 paper with its print side up and top edge toward the back. Keep all four corners flat, bring the guides against the stack and stay below the limit tabs. Legal stock requires holding the extension tab while pulling the tray front outward. The guide says the loaded tray then projects approximately 51 mm, or two inches, from the printer's front.
The priority slot instead receives one sheet at a time with the printable face up and top edge entering the printer. Select the actual paper size and type in the compatible driver; the presence of photo inputs does not make inkjet-only glossy paper suitable for this laser engine.
Two-sided work requires returning the pages
Automatic print duplex is not included. The original Windows procedure enables Allow Manual Duplexing in the printer's Configure and Paper Handling settings, then selects Print On Both Sides Manually in the job's Finishing tab.
After the first side, remove unused blank stock from the tray. Gather and straighten the printed output, return it with the printed side down and its top edge toward the back, then press Resume. The Letter, Legal and A4 booklet routine also depends on this manual second pass. Users who need unattended two-sided jobs should treat that handling requirement as a deciding limitation.
Envelopes have their own routine: one in the priority slot or up to ten suitable envelopes in Tray 2, printable face up with the stamp end toward the back. Use the correct envelope size in a one-sided job. Avoid clasps, windows, damaged stock and adhesive constructions unsuitable for laser heat.
Use the photo controls within their documented scope
The ni-specific control-panel memory-card function supports JPEG images and cards up to 2 GB. Insert one card at a time. Easy Photo Print lets you choose individual images or a range, then set image size, paper size, paper type and copies. Wait for the card activity light to stop blinking before removing the card.
The nearby PictBridge port serves a compatible digital camera or camcorder through its USB cable. Follow that device's direct-print instructions and choose its PictBridge mode if required. HP explicitly cautions against connecting other equipment to this port. It is distinct from the rear USB computer connection and supplies no document-capture route.
Check cartridges and working space
The original parts table specifies CB540A black, CB541A cyan, CB542A yellow and CB543A magenta. Replace cartridges through the front pull-out drawer: lift the old cartridge by its handle, remove the replacement's orange protection, avoid touching the imaging drum and remove the sealing tape completely. No remaining-toner quantity or replacement yield is assumed for an earlier unit.
HP declares up to 12 black or eight color pages per minute for both Letter and A4, not automatic-duplex throughput. Exact current US dimensions are approximately 15.7 inches wide, 17.8 deep and 10 high, with a stated weight of 40.02 lb. The original manual's shallower depth is explicitly preliminary. Allow additional front space for Legal paper, cartridge-drawer access, output collection and rear cables.

Paper, software and setup details
Print-rate conditions
The original explicitly rates both Letter and A4 at up to 12 one-sided black ppm and eight color ppm. Recommended monthly volume is 250–1,000 pages, distinct from the 30,000-page maximum duty. No measured performance or manual-duplex throughput is claimed.
Paper handling
The original support marks confirm Letter, Legal and A4 for both inputs. A3 and B4 rows are unmarked and excluded; maximum width is 216 mm. Tray 2 holds up to 150 ordinary 75-g/m², 20-lb bond sheets, varying with thickness and conditions. The single-sheet priority slot does not add stack capacity, and the 125-sheet output is not input. Normal Tray 2 paper loads face up with its top at the back, flat at all four corners, below tabs and with guides against it. Legal extends the front approximately 51 mm or two inches. Tray 1 accepts one sheet face up with its top entering the printer. Choose actual driver size and type. Manual duplex needs the first printed stack returned face down with its top at the back and Resume pressed. Envelopes are one in Tray 1 or up to ten in Tray 2, face up and stamp end at the back, in a one-sided job.
Scanning arrangement
The original complete product scope and hardware map describe a dedicated color printer with no scanner, copier, fax, glass or ADF. The ni-specific memory-card slots and PictBridge port print recorded images; they do not acquire documents. No computer scanning route is offered.
Computer and mobile connections
The original description, actual rear map and installation section establish rear USB 2.0 computer printing and built-in 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet. A current US support field claiming Gigabit Ethernet and two EIO slots conflicts with the original and is not adopted. No Wi-Fi is in the actual original interface configuration. AirPrint and Mopria remain unconfirmed. The front PictBridge connection is for a compatible camera or camcorder, not a second computer printer port.
Supplies and declared yields
The actual original parts table specifies CB540A black, CB541A cyan, CB542A yellow and CB543A magenta. A regional support article transposes the yellow and magenta part mappings; the original controls. Replace through the front drawer, remove orange protection and all sealing tape, and avoid touching the imaging drum. No numeric replacement yield, remaining toner, price or lifetime HP+ policy is borrowed from another printer.
Software and support
Use a compatible exact-model computer driver. The original USB routine requests an A-to-B cable when prompted; network installation uses the configuration page and printer hardware or IP address. Historical Windows and Mac lists are not current operating-system guarantees. The original Windows manual-duplex controls are Configure/Paper Handling Allow Manual Duplexing and job Finishing Print On Both Sides Manually. Secure held-job PIN release remains unknown; an embedded-web-server system password is not print release.
Electrical edition and setup
Exact HP US CC378A#ABA is explicitly discontinued and requires earlier opt-in. The current US electrical edition is 110–127 V at 60 Hz; original low-voltage and high-voltage columns are separate, and the actual plate controls. Exact current US body figures are 15.7 W × 17.8 D × 10 H inches and 40.02 lb; weight basis is not specified. The original 17.2-inch depth is expressly preliminary and is retained as a source difference. Legal loading adds about two inches at the front beyond the body. Allow cartridge-drawer, output and cable access. The ni photo panel handles JPEG and cards up to 2 GB, one card at a time; wait for activity to stop before removal. PictBridge requires a compatible camera or camcorder and its direct-print instructions.
