Color LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M578c (7ZU87A#BGJ; documented US low-voltage configuration)Illustrated overview
A useful fit for

A prepared Ethernet office printing a recommended 2,000–10,000 pages monthly and delivering two-sided originals to a reachable shared computer folder.

The main tradeoff

Included Legal input is only 100 sheets. Exact glass and automatic-duplex paper-size limits remain unconfirmed here; optional radio and mobile printing do not establish every desktop workflow.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can an Ethernet office capture both sides of Legal originals in one pass, use color printing and driver PIN release, and print 8,000 pages monthly?

Qualifies with earlier models enabled and print paper size left flexible, using compatible desktop controls, configured shared-folder delivery and appropriate fax service. The feeder supports Legal; automatic print duplex is confirmed without an exact size list in this assessment.

Can I require 650 ready Legal print sheets in the included trays?

Fails. Legal uses only the included 100-sheet multipurpose tray. The 550-sheet main cassette does not take that size, and optional additional feeders are excluded.

Does the base c model provide Wi-Fi Direct printing without buying a radio accessory?

Fails for the standard configuration. Wi-Fi Direct requires the optional Jetdirect wireless accessory and its stated installation prerequisites.

Flow capture belongs on a configured office network

The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise Flow MFP M578c combines color printing, copying, fax and a 100-page single-pass duplex scanner. It suits an office that wants two-sided originals delivered to prepared computer folders, with a physical keyboard and embedded optical character recognition to help describe and process files. Its included network connection is Ethernet; wireless and Wi-Fi Direct require an optional accessory.

This is discontinued US 7ZU87A#BGJ, identified by HP as commercial FCC Class A equipment. The assessment is limited to a documented low-voltage configuration; the listed 100–127-V, 60-Hz and 200–240-V, 50-Hz editions are separate, explicitly not dual voltage. Verify the actual electrical plate, accessories, software and condition.

HP rates one-sided black or color Letter printing up to 40 ppm, with 38 ppm A4 in the exact regional specification. The recommended printing range is 2,000–10,000 pages monthly; 80,000 maximum duty is another limit. An anomalous 56-ppm A4 entry in the original manual is retained as a source inconsistency rather than presented as a faster configuration.

Prepare the shared folder before scanning a batch

The reviewed file-delivery arrangement uses Scan to Network Folder over Ethernet. An administrator needs access to the printer's Embedded Web Server, a reachable shared-folder path and the appropriate credentials. The wizard can prepare a Quick Set, with Verify Access used for a fixed account. Merely connecting the cable does not complete the destination setup.

Load an original face down on the glass or face up in the feeder and adjust its guides. Select the prepared destination, name the file and choose Options for the format, resolution and Original Sides. Preview can help check page order and content before Send saves the completed file to the share.

The exact scanner supports automatic single-pass capture of Letter, Legal and A4 feeder originals, up to 8.5 by 14 inches. The glass is separately confirmed, but its exact scan-size boundary is not established in the reviewed source sections. This assessment therefore does not promise a size-specific glass match by borrowing the feeder maximum.

Flow adds OCR, multi-feed detection and image processing. Those tools assist the routine; they do not guarantee perfect recognition or complete feeding of every original. Keep important source pages until the saved file has been checked.

650 ordinary sheets does not mean 650 Legal sheets

The standard inputs are a 100-sheet multipurpose tray and a 550-sheet cassette, rated with 75-g/m², 20-lb stock. Letter and A4 can use both. Legal is documented only in the included multipurpose tray, so its supplied ready-paper capacity is 100. Additional 550-sheet feeders are options, and the original feeder and output bin are separate capacities.

Match the actual driver size and media type to the loaded tray. Keep the stack below the fill line and adjust guides without bending it. Preprinted stationery has different loading instructions for simplex, duplex and Alternative Letterhead Mode; the main-cassette orientation should not be copied from Tray 1.

Automatic print duplex is positively documented with compatible desktop controls. Windows uses Finishing and Print on Both Sides; the Mac procedure requires the HP driver and warns that AirPrint may expose different controls. The reviewed sections do not establish an exact automatic-duplex size list, so a selected specific duplex paper size remains unqualified until confirmed.

Up to ten envelopes use Tray 1, face down in the appropriate feed orientation, with the actual envelope size, Envelope type and Manual Feed selected. That separate routine does not establish automatic envelope duplexing.

Private jobs, USB and mobile printing need distinct settings

The original guide says the computer USB port is disabled by default. Enable Device USB through the panel or supported management arrangement, then install the appropriate driver. A front host socket and the rear computer port are different connections. Direct computer USB scanning is not established by the reviewed workflow.

Compatible desktop Job Storage controls provide Personal Job or Stored Job with an assigned PIN, followed by panel retrieval. The included encrypted disk and general user-login PINs are separate protections. Optional licensed HP Secure Print should not be mistaken for the independently documented driver PIN routine.

AirPrint and Mopria provide supported local-network printing. They do not inherit the desktop folder scanner, exact paper capacity or PIN controls. Analog fax needs suitable telephone service; the convenience stapler is a walk-up device rather than an automatic finisher.

Check supplies and operating clearance

The original box declares about 5,500 black and 3,500 composite color pages. Replacement US 212A cartridges are declared around 5,500 black and 4,500 per color; 212X around 13,000 black and 10,000 per color under ISO/IEC 19798 conditions. Actual yields vary. Dynamic security restricts cartridge chips as HP describes, so check compatibility rather than assuming any physically fitting supply works.

The exact US body is approximately 18.98 by 19.84 by 22.95 inches and 85 pounds, with larger open-access dimensions. Choose the M578c for its documented wired office workflow after checking the real installation, rather than treating every optional radio or software feature as included.

Paper, software and setup details

Print-rate conditions

Exact US Letter speed up to 40 black or color ppm, separately 38 A4 ppm in exact HP regional support. Original guide physical 23 says 56 A4 while its copy row and current exact references use 38; the anomalous print figure is not adopted. Recommended monthly print volume is 2,000–10,000, distinct from maximum duty 80,000. Capture images and copy pages are separate measures.

Paper handling

Included 100-sheet multipurpose and 550-sheet main input total 650 at 75-g/m², 20-lb stock. Letter/A4 use both; Legal only fits included Tray 1, capacity 100. Extra 550-sheet feeders, output and original feeder are excluded. Automatic desktop print duplex is confirmed, but exact duplex-size range remains unestablished in reviewed sections; selected paper size plus duplex must not borrow the simplex list. Actual driver size/type, fill line and preprinted simplex/duplex orientations matter. Envelopes use Tray 1 only, up to ten, face down in the correct feed orientation, actual size/Envelope type/Manual Feed; no automatic envelope duplex claim.

Scanning arrangement

Exact c has a 100-page dual-head single-pass duplex feeder, EveryPage ultrasonic multi-feed detection, embedded OCR and keyboard. Actual maximum feeder area is 8.5 × 14 inches, supporting Letter/Legal/A4. Glass hardware and its computer-file route are confirmed, but exact glass scan dimensions are unresolved here, so only an unspecified-size flatbed route is qualified. Enabled Scan to Network Folder over Ethernet saves computer files with reachable share, suitable credentials and actual original-side settings. No USB pull-scan or optional-radio scan route invented.

Computer and mobile connections

Included computer USB 2.0 and Gigabit/Fast Ethernet 10/100/1000 are separate from host USB interfaces. Original guide says rear computer USB is disabled by default; enable Device USB before driver printing. Infrastructure Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC and BLE require optional Jetdirect 3100w with its stated internal-USB accessory prerequisite; not included merely because the M578 is Flow c. Local AirPrint/Mopria are separate network printing plans, without desktop scanning, PIN or size-capacity inheritance.

Supplies and declared yields

US original box declares approximately 5,500 black and 3,500 composite color pages; pre-2021 manufactured units may differ. Replacement 212A W2120A black about 5,500, W2121A cyan/W2122A yellow/W2123A magenta about 4,500; 212X W2120X black about 13,000, W2121X/W2122X/W2123X colors about 10,000. ISO/IEC 19798 continuous-printing basis, actual yields vary. Dynamic security blocks non-HP chips as the exact HP disclosure explains; reused HP chips may permit reused/remanufactured/refilled cartridges. No remaining toner, universal cartridge compatibility or cost-per-page promise.

Software and support

Compatible Windows/macOS Job Storage supports Personal Job or Stored Job with PIN and panel retrieval; original Mac control specifies four digits. This is independent of general identity PINs, encrypted disk and optional licensed HP Secure Print. Exact c includes minimum 500-GB secure disk. Network-folder capture must be enabled in EWS, with reachable UNC path and credentials, Verify Access as applicable, file name/type and Options for Original Sides. Original historical software listings need current checking. Mac automatic duplex requires the HP driver and may differ with AirPrint.

Electrical edition and setup

Discontinued US 7ZU87A#BGJ, reviewed documented low-voltage 100–127 VAC at 60 Hz; high-voltage 200–240 VAC at 50 Hz is a separate option, explicitly not dual voltage. Check actual plate. Exact US closed body 18.98 × 19.84 × 22.95 inches, maximum 32.3 × 34 × 33; original guide has slightly different rounded open dimensions. Weight 85 lb has unstated cartridge basis, not 99.7-lb carton. FCC Class A commercial equipment. Included fax needs suitable phone service; convenience stapler does not automatically finish print jobs. Allow scanner, keyboard, paper, service and cable access.
